OMG i've never freaked out so much in my life.. i was sitting here at my computer when I saw something moving at the bottom of one of my screens out of the corner of my eye. I looked at it and it was a spider ;.; it had long long long spindly little legs that were just HORRIBLE OMG ;.; it rushed at me across the desk and I flipped out of my chair ont othe floor. I was so upset by this thing that I had to run out of the room and back into the main office (Where they now think i'm a complete ******). A few mins later I was a little calmer but nobody would help me get rid of it despite my pleas so I went back in. IT was sitting on my desk, it's legs flattened out away from it's body in a star. In a fit of fear induced rage I grabbed a handful of papers and tried to smash it but I missed and it ran off and hid under some more papers on the desk. I grabbed a screwdriver and beat at the desk in the area it was hiding with the handle whilst screaming at the horrible horrible monster.
I hit it and it smeared across the sheets.
I just stood there for a while silently and twitching but now i'm back to my senses i'm itching all over ;.;
Writing this here has made me feel better, thank you.

always loved this comment
On average, people fear spiders more than they do dying. However, statistically you are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than by the bite of a poisonous spider.
but then, i grew up in Australia, i knew where the venomous spiders were, poking them with a stick was fun. Same sort of rush as running a gate camp.

I've never been that scared of spiders personally, although for some reason loads of people are petrified of them. Why is that?
Oh, can remember a few years ago sitting around with one of my friends, and she was saying that she was afraid of spiders, and at that moment this Enormous spider crawled onto the back of her chair and stopped right next to her shoulder. I was like "Don't turn around right now." "Why?" "Just don't." So of course, being human she turns her head, shrieks like a banshee, leaps up and pretty much jumps to the other side of the room (I'd never seen her move that quickly :P) where she proceeds to throw stuff at it. I laughed my ass off at that. ----------------------------------------------

I remember one time my GF was sitting on my lap and we were talking and she points out a spider that was peeking at us from the kitchen. I get up and grab a boot and walk over to notice that this thing was just disgusting as hell. It was super black and it looked like a mutant being all warped and disfigured. Then I slammed my boot on it and learned the horrible truth as 50 babies spread to the 4 winds.
My dad's garage has a seperate little room that stores the water tank, his fireplace pellets, and a freezer and I hate going in that room cause he's got some of the biggest wolf spiders I've ever seen out there and these guys will charge you. Last time I saw one on the ground and next thing I know it was sprinting right at me. I screamed like a girl and did a awesome little tap dance. My dad wouldn't stop laughing for hours.
A long time ago when Arachnophobia came out on video we were all watching it as a family and during one of the suspenseful scenes my dad got a hand behind my stepmom and started lightly touching her neck. I have never seen someone fly of a couch so fast in my life.

I keep thinking an alliance called "Arachnids" will be formed out of this thread and each person in the alliance will have to use a webber.
Luckily I haven't seen any spiders around here except for the ocasional Danny/Daddy long-legs which aren't technically spiders... But we've killed a possum and apparently we saw a racoon around, oh and we've had a few snakes about.

Yesterday i had to move som stones for my parents (had been there a while) and there was spiderweb all over it so i knew there would be spiders... therefore i put on some gloves and started working... after i had brushed off and killed three minor spiders i went to grab the last stone, and when i put my hand on it the hugest spider i have ever seen in my life (i live in Denmark so we dont really have that big spiders, but it would definately not fit under a beer glass) ran really fast away from behind the stone and under som leaves that were further away... lets just say that i freaked out and didnt get near the place for at least an hour

I don't have a spider problem where I live. My cat thinks they are tasty. In fact, she thinks wolf spiders are the greatest treat ever.
And yeah, a Arachnid corp/alliance that sets up interdiction and webbing at gates would be a pretty funny outcome from this thread. ;)

Well Not all spiders. I love messing around with the little fuzzy hyperactive jumping spiders. They're the only breed that I feel that has some actual thought process going on as they explore the world.
Anytime I see one of those guys inside the house or something I scoop em up and let em go outside. Any others can just go to hell.

I've read that they have a sort of curiousity to them (the jumping spiders), and that they will actually watch you watching them instead of just running for it.

I know what ya mean by fear os spiders. i cant stand the *******!!!!
jan last year i was cruising in my MX5 with the top down as one does in summer. it was rush hour traffic and I saw movement out of the corner of my eye so I looked and what ever it was, it was gone...
I pulled up to a set of red lights and i saw the movement. a ******* spider going down its web from the rear view mirror...
Not only did i basically go EEEEK! I jumped outta the car... in rush hour traffic needless to say... freaking out thinking to my self WTF! is that thing in my car for? well the lights now go green! I get abuse from a delivery guy , i promptly give him the bird and tell him to go forth and procreate!
i finally grow some balls. small ones at this stage... and reach into my glove box and pull out some paper... I with a very shaky hand reach under the spider and try to scoop him up, ( not a good idea ) and the little **** crawls up his or her web back to the mirror! I completely loose it at this stage and drop the paper.. I think this is where the delivvery guy caught onto what was happening and burst into fits of laughter...
Needless to say this ****ed me off to no ends... after some cat and mouse with the spider and some paper... i finally get it on the paper and i shakingly drop the spider and paper on the road...
this was over a period of 15 minutes of red and green lights and lotsa abuse both ways between me and several irate drivers. so i jump into my car and speed of in total shame ....
and nowmost of eve will know i cant stand the ******* LOL -

Actually did you know they're the smartest known spider? They mainly subside by eating other spiders, and given they're so small, they have to rely on out-thinking them. When hunting they'll actually pluck it to send vibrations to try and lure out their intended victim. If they've met the same type of spider before they'll remember what vibrations work well. Unfortunately I hear their bites aren't nice...

^ house spider?
I prefer not to kill them, I normally whimper for rescue. This one time I was on my bed and a spider appeared on the bed. Much flailing and trying ti flick it away ended it being on the floor in a clothes pile. So close to the bed I didnt risk putting my feet down, so I called my dad on my mobile who was downstairs to rescue me

Wolf spiders aren't that scary. They can bite you, but not very badly. The ones you get in the UK aren't that big either. It's probably not an ideal climate for them.
Personally, I like spiders. They keep the local population of flies down. --------------------------------------------------------------------

WOLF SPIDER?!?!?! ARE YOU FREACKING KIDDING ME?!
Yep. Scary things huh? They are so named because they run down their prey rather than using a web. They are actually fairly harmless to humans and will mostly leave you alone unless you mess with them. Thing is they a freaking huge and FAST!
I had an encounter with the very similar Giant Crab Spider in Arizona once. I could tell the difference (after the fact looking it up) only because it was on my wall (wolf spiders rarely climb). This is so named because they will often scuttle sideways, crab like, just adding to the overall creepy factor. Like they Wolf Spider they are flipping huge and bloody fast (they too chase their prey).
It positivley freaked me the feck out. I was working at my computer and noticed the thing about a foot away from me on the wall. I had never seen one before and being from the midwest was quite unused to such a beast. Legs and all it was the size of the palm of my hand. So big and so close I could see its eyes and rather formidable looking fangs.
I take all that in in about a nanosecond. I promptly pushed away from my desk so hard and fast I toppled over in my chair. Ordinarily I would feel embarassed by this but there was no time as this thing was after me (not really of course but in my mind it was). Not wanting to get close I pisk up a baseball and throw it at the spider. I miss but was close enough to make the spider move. Move does not really cover it...more like it teleported about 5 feet. It was shockingly fast.
Not really up for getting close enough to the thing to attpempt squishing it, not to mention squishing something that big seemed too gross to contemplate, I hit on a new plan. I go to the kitchen and grab a can of Lysol aerosol spray and a lighter. I come back and the spider is gone! Now I am thinking I will need to get a hotel room and sell the house because no way I am living there with that thing around. Reluctantly I set about looking for the creepy crawly.
I find him on the ceiling above my head. Controlling my urge to run screaming from the house like a little girl I slowly get in range, light the lighter and use the aerosol as an impromptu flamethrower. It worked remarkably well. Surprisingly well. The spider did not burn so much as explode.
It did occur to me I might have burned the house down doing this but if that is what was needed to get that thing so be it. As it happened I just left a singe mark on the ceiling that a little work removed.
Normally I am a live and let live kind of guy but no way in hell I was sharing a room with that.

Yeah the ones in the city are tiny compared to that sucker but the ones at my dads house are maybe just a smaller and aggressive as hell. This one that caught me in the garage cleared 10ft between us in about 2 seconds.
And I didn't think the jumpers had poison or anything. I just scoop em up in my hand and let em outside. Sometimes I even stop to play with them for a bit.
In any case any wolfspider I see dies. I've got plenty of other critters to keep the bugs down like birds, blue belly lizards and bullsnakes (although they probably eat the mice more than anything)

Yeah, to be honest I kind of regret posting it now, maybe I'm just a wimp but it's a little disturbing.

You have to wonder the evolutionary process that allows a insect to successfully live and reproduce considering that it aggressively attacks much larger animals. Spiders are high up on my list of creatures that might be in charge if we weren't around, heh. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 25 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

spiders, imho, are one of the few insects that demonstrate, altho very rudimentary, individual intelligence (specially the jumping spiders).
if we gave them a few more hundreds of thousands of years and an environment where they need to apply more wit, tbh I cannot conceive the monsters that would be born. ---

camel spiders are not that harmfull. they are not even true spiders...
Then WTF was that thing? It looked like a Camel Spider but your link indicates they are not venomous. Are you suggesting it out muscled that mouse and broke its neck or something (actually I know you are not suggesting anything like...just curious what people think)?
And that video is disturbing. Not so much seeing nature at work (although not pretty) but more for the sadistic nature of people who set that crap up for entertainment purposes.

due to the size of the spider, I suppose that the trauma was big enough to cause the mouse's death?
basically he was beaten to death maybe? ---

Luckily we don't get wolf spiders that huge over in good ole blighty, they would scare the **** out of me! Normally spiders don't bother me so much, its mostly when the buggers make their webs in he middle of paths etc at head height and you don't notice it till your face is right in the web!! I HATE spider webs in my face!
I have a really vivid memory of when i was a little kid and i ran into my fathers green house not noticing the massive spiders web at head height! Needless to say i absolutely shat myself! (I must of been no older than 4-5 at the time so even a smallish garden spider seemed huge back then). Ever since then i freek out at walking through spiders webs!
But i have to agree that jumping spiders are just cool! I saw a fascinating documentary about them once and they really are incredibly clever. This 1 spider they filmed was sitting by a web of a massive spider that must of been 10-20x the size of the jumping spider, and it was just sitting there for about 5 mins looking at the web scouting it out. Then it slowly made its way above the web and very carefully lowered itself down on a thread very very slowly so not to get the attention of the big 1 on the web, until it was hovering just above the one on the web. Then it pounced!! Good thing they are so small and mainly feed on other spiders or we could be in trouble

I dont know what was up with the wicki page but camel spiders are very dangerous. I got a chance to talk to my friends brother who just got back from tour #3 in iraq and he told me all kinds of things about camels, like nothing else could beat them in the betting games except for a small white spider.
And I say don't trust anything that can eat a big lizard

Gah, I hate that. Especially when sometimes I'm walking down the road and I get a spider's web in my face. I don't understand how (or why) a spider would want to make a web going from one side of the road to the other. ---------------------------

Seems Gary Larson's attorneys are very good at hunting down and squashing any images of his comics on the internet as they are surprisingly hard to come by. I mention all that because one of his comics had a perfect answer to this.
Two spiders had built a web across the bottom of a slide in a children's playground. The one spider looks to the other and says, "If we pull this off we'll eat like kings!"
(ok...better if I could have linked the comic itself)

interestingly enough, such spider can be a good thing since it kills those nasty, and poisonous hobo spiders.
Originally by: wikipedia An established population of Giant house spiders is generally considered to be a deterrent to the establishment of a Hobo spider population. Giant house spiders compete with Hobo spiders for the same resources. Male Giant house spiders will often kill Hobo spiders and won't hesitate to make a meal of one.
FYI, hobo spider poison is known to be one of the very few documented spiders capable of producing necrotoxic poison, so yes, by not killing one and putting it outside is good, no matter how disgusting the spider is. ---

It's a good thing Hobo spiders don't occur naturally in the UK then. Otherwise I'd have another thing to freak out about. ---------------------------

Their not supposed to be able to live in the NW US either but some people say they're thriving up here. I may have seen one or two but I'm not positive. I do know a gal who got bit in the leg by one like 5 years ago and she's still got this pump thing connected to her sucking the poison out. Her leg is really nasty looking and at one point they were talking that it might be amputated but I never heard anything else about it in like 2 years now.

the pump might be because of the necrosis and not the poison.
it's possible that the pump is sucking pus and dead cells out of the affected area.
must be a wet necrosis.
amputation would be better tbh ---

Edited by: Constantinee on 19/08/2007 07:43:31 man my worst spider encounter was horrible.
so me and the misses are "sleeping" then all of a sudden i see her face in a state of shock and siguist. she then tells me that there is a damn big ass black spider on my forehead. so being me i punch myself in the face out of fear and kill it.
however. a week later it turns out that bastard had set up an eggs nest...yeah we had the house bombed with pesticide. and damnit it was our first day int he house.
another time i was 6 i woke up and had literally a blackwidow yes a black widow crawling up my arm i was lucky that i knocked it off before being bitten
and if you thought the camel spider vrs mouse was horrible...you couldent pay me enough to do this! never will i try this

I was driving home the other night, went to flick my ciggy out the window and low and behold there was a bloody huge one hanging over my right shoulder.
Best of it is, I couldn't stop the car for another half mile to kill it. So I had to carry on driving watching it out the corner of my eye getting closer and closer to my face

A great movie to watch that has spiders is eight legged freaks. Stars David Arquette and Kari Wuhrer. Kinda a scary spider movie parody and it's pretty good. Shows alot of different classes of spiders.

I don't tend to mind spiders that much. Small ones I can handle, mainly because I live right next to a field I tend to get a lot inside the house during the summer. But when they get bigger than 2 inches across coin, that's when I feel obligated to kill them. ---------------------------
