Edited by: Charisi Avoaty on 14/08/2007 08:58:55 I left the game for about a year and just came back, not an hour ago. I'm out and about, flying around trying to figure out what in the hell I'm doing, when I get podded by two wonderfully nice individuals. Even after repeated begging to not kill me as I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I get killed anyway. Now I remember why I left in the first place. There is no way to get ahead in this game as a new player. Those that have been playing for years won't let you get ahead.
What's even the point to continue playing? I had a fairly decent ship, (a Prophecy), with some decent weapons, and now I have the crappy little starter ship and maybe 2k ISK to my name. My ship insurance ran out while I was gone of course, and I did not know it had even run out in the first place, so no money to buy a ship.
It is utterly ridiculous that a new player, (or old returning player), can't even fly around for a few minutes to try and figure out how to play again, without getting podded by a couple of morons with nothing better to do.

Did you fly around lowsec to get your bearings on the game again? If so, did you read the warning you got when you jumped in? Stick to highsec for a while until you're back on your feet.

You want my honest opinion? You have only yourself to blame for putting yourself in that position.
- No ship insurance. - Going to low sec or 0.0 without knowing what you're doing.
I know it sounds harsh, but this is all your fault.

Free insurance payout is 40%. So you have at least enough for a cruiser. Going to lowsec was your fault - it is the primary pirate area. Highsec (0.5+) is vast and was created so players would have the safety you claim to desire, yet you left that safety, died and now come here whining. Pfft, I say.
Also, what games have you been playing where many of the people aren't scum? I'd really like to know, since I have never seen any since the internet was created.

Edited by: Charisi Avoaty on 14/08/2007 09:10:32 Well for one, if you had read my post, you would have seen that I didn't know my insurance had run out in the first place. It took me 10 mins to figure out how to auto pilot to a space station a couple jumps away to get all my stuff. While I was autopiloting, I was just starting to go down all the tabs to figure out what they were. I make a jump while going through my skills to try and figure out what to learn next, when BAM BAM BAM, I'm dead. All the numbers and crap listed in the upper right meant absolutely nothing at the time as, gee, I don't know, I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING! I mean, it was all starting to come back, but rather slowly.
As far as playing mmos where people are scum, yes, there are many in every game out there. It's just so far, all the people I have seen in game and on this thread especially have all been as you describe, "sucm", with the exception of the first reply in this thread. He was actually trying to be encouraging, and constructive, (at least that is how I took it), while everyone else immediately turned on moron mode and started flaming.

Yes, the EVE community is one of the most sociopathic and scummy of all MMORPGs.
If you'd played enough to be flying a Prophecy before you left then you'd know that. You'd also know that there's no such thing as 100% safe space and that low/no sec is extremely unsafe.
Also the mechanisms of insurance including the (still unfixed) bug that you don't get an "insurance expired" mail until you actualy check your insurance haven't changed in the last year, since you left.
All of these are, indeed, things you should have known and have no excuse for not knowing. Plus you forgot the PRIMARY RULE of EVE....
NEVER fly anything you can't afford to lose.

You're still not understanding me.
- Who's fault is it that you didnt know your insurance ran out? - Who's fault is it that you went to 0.0 or low sec without paying attention? - Who's fault is it that you dont know what the numbers or stats mean?
Eve is a game that forces you to accept responsibility for your stupid actions. You just made a few mistakes and now you have suffered the consequences. Why are you blaming the people who just play the game the way its meant to be played?
I can understand if your first post was just to vent your frustration, but now you're pushing it... ---

CCP's shoddy documentation. Trial by error isn't a good way to learn in a game where you can lose everything and thus be unable to play in an instant. [ insert fancy sig here ] |

I'd put my money on an ebay'd character by this guy to be honest.
a) He would of noticed/known that he would get 40% FREE insurance even if his previous had ran out. and B) he would of known about lowsec/highsec and 0.0 even if he had not played for a while. Duncan Bannatyne

1.Go throw the tutorial, it helps. 2.Read the new player section. 3.Stay out of 0.0. or low sec. its not that they are scum or not for them your either a threat or pray even the nicest persons will kill u if go into their territory un announced.
4. learn to walk before you fly, get a noob ship or make an alt, try every thing there, it helps a lot, learn how to run hide, make safe spots and set book marks in your alt and ull be ok.
5. eve has one of the best community for new players, so read before you flame every one dude.
6. go to the recruitment channel and ask for a corp that will help u out, thy will take step by step to where u want.

a) you got a mail telling you that insurance ran out b) you get a pop up warning telling you that your are entering lowsec c) read the patch notes before login in so you would have known about warp to zero (instead of autopilot) d) never fly a ship you can't afford to loose (and that isn't a new rule!!) e) You are never safe anywhere in EVE.
i'm sorry that you were ganked but the information needed to prevent it was accessible to you, you just didn't make use of it.
I know EVE can be a difficult game to get a hang of and it's actually quite impossible by try and error so you should rly read all the information you can BEFORE undocking. If you can't deal with getting killed and loosing **** then maybe WoW or something like that is a better choice for you. |

He could have avoided everything if he had bothered to activate his brain (if he has one). That is what makes EVE good, that you will get punished if you mindlessly jump in. Even when I was a n00b I did not make such stupid mistakes as this rolemodel carebear.
If you want to play a game that does not require you to think, EVE is not for you. Thank god.

Either way (bugged or not feature) the insurance has a LIMITED time of 12 weeks. If one is out for 1 year and comes back, he/she should know that the insurance has expired. If he/she has ever played the game of course.

The truth can sometimes be difficult to accept. Doesnt mean im not helping. If its ccp's poor documentation that made this happen, how come thousands of newbies doesnt make the same mistakes? Because they dont have a shiny tech 2 ship before they know how the game works. They may lose a few frigs while learning, thats it.
Im not much for blaming ccp or the players when its this specific player that made some huge mistakes, and then come here crying about the community treating him badly, refusing to accept his huge part in this happening in the first place.

I suppose this is another example of Eve's winning formula. It weeds out the weak better than first-year calculus.
And seriously, the game continues to be easier for new players. When I started I had a whopping 30,000 skillpoints. Nowadays...well, you all know. Not to mention warp-to-zero. My first few months in the game were plagued by constant bookmarking and copying. Bleh.

That's the beauty of eve; If you get killed it is 100% YOUR FAULT.
it's your fault if you don't scan before warping to some random belt and get ganked. it's your fault if you don't insure your ship and lose a pile of cash. it's your fault if you blunder into a gatecamp because you were too busy eating crisps.
Eve is harsh and unforgiving, but complaining that people are being mean to you is rubbish; it's your fault. concentrate.

Seriously, lousy attempt at trolling. If you had actually played the game for an hour or two, you'd have realized what was inaccurate about your lie, as well as the fact that the first million or so is the hardest -- by then you'd learn how to earn so you'd never be without a decent ship for long. If you'd been playing enough the first time around to get a BC, you'd have known that EVE is a NON-CONSENSUAL PVP GAME, and that flying into low sec / 0.0 is to be looking for PvP.
It's not the games fault that you went in to what is essentially a PvP zone in a ship you can't afford to lose. That'd be your fault... --------

Honestly, if you're an old player, you should've known that "autopiloting through lowsec is bad".
Or that:
"You might die."
About having only 2k isk, is a lie, as the prophecy pays around 11 mil in insurance even without insurance.
This is not a brag, but it took me two years to lose one single ship. Why? I read the tutorial, the manual, the warnings THAT POP UP ON YOUR SCREEN and thought "Hmm, maybe this warning means...i might get killed. LEt's not go there yet."
To this day, i've lost two ships to npc, maybe three/four ships to pirates, and those were situations where i knew a 100% i might.
This game is safer then any other MMO out there, if you use a bit of gray matter in your adventures.
So yeah, i have a problem with being serious, but it's the almost smallest problem i have. |

Eve's average age is 27 (wiki).

It just shows that the most common people on WoW are not the minority of whiners mass-posting on forums or spamming the chat channels.
Saying that would be the same as saying that the forum community of eve is representative of most players in eve...

Yes, older players have certain advantages over the new guys. That's what they get for all the time that they kept with EVE while some other peeps left and became uber with some other games or whatever. It is only fair.
If you had no idea what you were doing, why did you enter a dangerous zone in a nice ship that you had no money to replace? EVE like any game has certain rules by which you should try to play. You learn about these rules by doing the tutorial, asking questions in help channel, and reading this forum. Entering low security space you get a warning message pop up right in front of you. If you get a waring message popping up saying "Please don't step on the rake. Stepping on the rake will hurt. And you sure you want to step on the rake?" and you click OK and immediately get hit on the head by the rake, well it is not the cruel, heartless rake to blame for it now is it.

I just was tired of seeing all that non-sense coming from, hum, some "respectable" forum-warriors claiming they were more mature than WoW players, and looked for truth.
And found out that site (and others) that just show that basically the average Joe in Eve is more or less as old as the average Joe in WoW... destroying any claim of maturity advantage or age advantage for players in Eve.
Eve stays more risky, since you can lose things, but somehow, it would mean that risk averse people and people looking for risk are not defined by criteria such as maturity or age. Which is not really surprising, actually.

"More balls" Let me guess, all that time in space being irradiated by the sun means the Eve lads have 3 balls and the women 3 nipples. Yuck.
Or do you mean men with bigger balls? In which case scientific research shows these men are more likely to be unfaithful and poor companions, and that might explain why there are fewer female players.

Its like running down a motorway and moaning becuase you got ran over. As for new players getting a chance LOL, You will never get a chance if you dont try to, everyone else seems to do alright. dont fly what u cant afford to loose, dont fly without insurance.

Actually I read somewhere the average age of WoW is 28, which is kind of sad

The hard men with balls are not in video games, they're in prison, or in the army.
Eve is a form of entertainment, not a rite of manhood or a badge of courage.

Charisi Avoaty....you made a mistake m8, dont worry about it....as for half the reply's that are flaming you....dont worry about them either.....alot of folk on these forums feel the need to flame anyone and everyone and they tend to have an over inflated sence of self importance....i think there all trying to bump up there post count so they can apply to be a forum moderator....iv seen it on many forums in the past...lol...its kinda sad.
Anyway...my advice to you is to learn from your mistake
Never fly autopilot in 0.0 or anything lower than 0.5. Always watch local while traviling in low-sec. Never trust anyone other than your corp m8's as you said...there are alot of scummy folk out there.
I hope this experiance aint put you off the game....i know this behaviour is sending alot of other people back to games like Wow (iv never played it myself)....but as i said...try and learn from your mistake m8.

Sure, you can be out of game a long time and forget quite a lot, but the fact that lowsec/0.0 isn't safe? Coupled along with all the warning the UI vomits at you the first time you get into a lowsec/0.0 system? Unless the time off was spent huffing paint I can't see how this one fact gets forgotten.

A year and a half of not playing is balanced by the fact that you apparently had a Prophecy, which should be at least about what, 100 hours of play? If you're good? I very much doubt you forget the very basics of the game (autopilot) after spending so much time with it. I've tested your claim and even though i have not played Sim City 4 in over 2 years i still remember exactly how to play it (same with Guild Wars, by the way).
Then just having 2k isk? Nope. Not even paying attention to your blinking wallet and checking how much was actually in it was rather, dim, to say the least.
I'm having to go with the conspiracy theorists on this one and say the account has been ebayed....

That is usually the nice people who like to gank 10 to 1, gate camp hours on end, etc etc
