I had a funky idea for the "political" map. How about, when theres a a change in the influence blob of a given side, the previous shape of the blob remains "shadowed" on the image.
In other words, say Goons (for example) grab a BoB station and the influence blob changes accordingly, BoB's image from the previous day appears as a pale grey shadow-blob on today's map.
This would enable people to see the day by day changing along the borders of alliances. Would be great for gauging the movement of territory contests. ------

You might want to get into contact with diplomats from GS/RA/TCF and BoB and see if they'd help you sort the colours on the blocmap out. Failing that, this might be useful:
http://standings.goonfleet.com/?sb=as
The few major ones I'm pretty sure on - Red: Intrepid Crossing VENOM Curatores Veritas Alliance Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate
Blue: ISS The Sphere Confederation
Others like Ultima Rati0 and Ethereal Dawn I'm unsure about - do you class part of a bloc as allied with, or active combat participation? The above are all under the latter.

Since EVE-files may be down for a few days I'm having to post these things by hand. I don't get up until around 20:00, so sorry guys.

Oh, and expect a new revision of the power bloc map this weekend; I should have the time to try a few new things. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map

Originally by: Patch86 I'm not sure I like the idea of some NPC regions having a stronger influence than others on the arbitrary distinction of how powerful the neighbours are, for two reasons.
1) It makes the influence blobs harder to interpret. That is to say, there being a random gap in BoB space makes it look for all the world like they have less overwhelming influence in Delve than is the case, which sort of defeats the object of having an influence blob.
2) It requires you the map-maker to individually tweak the area if and when the neighbours' sovereignty levels change. The purpose of this map is to be an almost-automated and completely neutral map. If you're tweaking the core settings in accordance with the ebbs and flows of individual space holders, it's not really automated or neutral...
Well I'd argue it's still neutral since I'm only trying to remove influence from areas where there are NPC systems, but you're right in that it's definitely not automatic. This is why I'm still undecided on the whole issue; thanks for the feedback.
i'm wondering why npc space in geminate and pure blind was not showing up in the proof of concept. No outside entity really has that strong of influence in the surrounding area.

also alot of the large powerblocks overlap, and others aren't quite consistent. It might be better to break them up into their various sub-groups, ie smashkill and atlas and chaos etc. While these groups are allied to say, morsus, razor and co, standings aren't fully consistent between the two groups. Basically I'm just saying that i would rather see a 'powerblock' map split into smaller divisions, than the broad 'coalitions' that not everyone falls into perfectly (if at all)

Okay, two new changes:
1) A new colortest. I rebuilt the region name renderer, as I was finding it hard to read some region names. Now the names are a lot brighter and don't get covered up by big blobs. I'm looking at making this live soon, but I want some feedback just in case.
2) A new proof of concept power bloc map. Everyone now has slightly different colors, the membership list is in, and I've colored in the borders in black to help indicate the separate alliances among the blocs. I'm especially interested in feedback here, as this is much closer to a shipping product. And yes, the memberships are wrong, that's about the least important thing right now, and will be fixed if/when it moves in to production. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map |

Th region names are very helpful.
The power bloc map looks visually appealing. The only area of improvement I can find is the power-bloc membership, but as you've already pointed out, you know it's currently incorrect and it's a low priority anyways. So I won't bother saying more on that. All in all, the power bloc map looks awesome. Thanks so much. ---

Agree here on the powerbloc map being nice. But you'll definitly need a seperate thread to figure out who's who (ie Tri being not part of the North Coal) --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

Huh? You mean Tri isn't on our side?
I love the look of the new map but it will probably take cooperation with reps from each of the major power blocks to make it work. This is going to be especially nice if it can be animated.

You should make Tri rainbow colors, signifying our love for carebearing and the fact that every alliance in the game are our allies.
Especially people we fight daily...definetely allies.
On a serious note, I would consider TRI/ATF/Dest/Frege a powerblock seperate from RZR/MM.

I like the powerblock map, it has a lot of potential. Best thing to do would be to contact diplos for all of the alliances and get info straight from them, pardoning the obvious choices.
Also, I noticed another one of the influence maps based on Paladin's code has circles where Sov 4 or capitals or something is in effect, are you planning on adding that to your maps? (I prefer your version over the others I have seen so far)

Edited by: Verite Rendition on 07/11/2007 04:25:28 Thanks for the feedback on the maps guys, I appreciate it.
I'm curious however if there is someone out there with some basic Photoshop skills that would like to go in to a joint project with me? I personally really like Josh's battle map, and while this replicates some of that, it can't replicate it all. The automated process takes care of all of the hard work (drawing the map and who owns what), so all the map would need are some icons and other knick-knacks added, and it would be very close in functionality to Josh's map. This could easily be something updated every 1-2 weeks since half of the process is automated.
I'd like to hear back from everyone on what they think about the idea (i.e. would you like that over what I have today) and to hear from anyone that may be able to handle the drawing aspects of such a project. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map |

Edited by: NATMav on 07/11/2007 13:46:35 Is it possible to pull ships kills in last 24 hours and place a marker where kills > X number to designate hot spots? It would be difficult and unreliable to attempt to automate warzones based on sov, given that systems and stations are handed from one entity to the other peacefully quite often.
Or maybe have one marker for large battles where lots of ships are getting killed, and combine that with sov changes so if you have X number of kills along with sov change, it gets marked a warzone.

Paladin Vent's map would highlight any territory that changed hands in the previous 24 hours with diagonal patterns (example, although using one of the monthly summaries: http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/UNL/0705-summary.png). I suppose you could use different types of diagonal hashing to highlight territory that changed hands in the past day and past week, i.e. 2-pixel-wide lines for 1 day ago, 1-pixel wide for up to 1 week ago.

Is the "3 power blocs" thing definitely a keeper, or are you planning to expand it with the final product?
As pointed out, Tri+Co are arguably a power bloc on their own, and the drone regions would definitely have been it's own back when there was a MAD Pact. ------

Momentum... good idea :P
How about kinda "arrow" type things as usually used in war documentaries. The vectors could be calculated from previous snapshots of the situation and given a certain threshold, so that it doesn't get too messy.
Could be really neat... If you don't get around to it earlier, I'll check your source and perhaps write a solution myself. Also, imo, this entire thing could be rewritten into java and ran off a random linux shell. Mixing languages is kinda nasty and Java is crossplatform + Java has very good XML parsing libraries, that would handle most of this stuff automagically(tm).
Anyway, I will see what I can do about implementing JDBC+something like XStream this weekend. Could be fun.

CCP doesn't export that data, so it's not something that could be done automatically. The warzones themselves wouldn't be automated mind you, the icons for those would be put in by a human.

Code-wise the diagonal lines thing is extremely hard to do. One day perhaps I'll be able to put it in, but it's not looking very likely at this point.

Currently it's based off of the concepts of Josh's map, so it's 3 power blocs. I could expand it fairly easily, but any decision on that will be when I start hashing out who is part of what bloc. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map |

Strongly disagree that it is hard to do, a bit of simple math.
Also, I looked over your project. While it works, it made me laugh :)
I'll make a "small" redesign this weekend, and probably set up SVN. If you are interested, drop me a line with IM in eve-mail or something.
If not, I'll just dump it here after it's done and you can decide for yourself if you want to use it ;)
