As the temporary caretaker of the EVE Influence Map, I am establishing a new thread for it to keep the tracking issues separate from the original creator's (Paladin Vent) thread since his map is currently not being updated.
Curious what the EVE Influence map is? Read below for Paladin's description
Originally by: Paladin Vent My purpose was to create an objective, unbiased political map of the EVE. The map, that will not base on someoneÆs thoughts and opinions, but only on public facts, such as sovereignty of the solar systems.
Each claimed solar system emits its influence to the nearest space. The system with outpost emits 6 times more influence than regular claimed one. The system with greater sovereignty level emits the more influence. The amount of the influence is reducing proportional to the square distance from the emitting system. For every point of map the summary influence of all alliances is calculated and the territory lays claim to the most influencing alliance.
Moreover, influence is spreading through the jump gates to the neighbors' systems. After each jump influence value decreased by 70%. All systems that get influence from the star gate spread also begin to emit it in space (Systems can emit influence for different alliances concurrently).
The systems, claimed by NPC are also emitting a little ôempireö influence, so the alliances canÆt claim their territory.
Just think that influence is water and color on map is steam. This should clarify the idea of the map.
Map is fully generated by the Java program. No editions were made to it by the human hands. Some of the alliances donÆt appear on the map, because their influence is to low to overwhelm their big influencing neighbor.
The original map code is under a BSD license, I will be releasing an updated version of it complete with the DB and tools soon.
The latest version of the map: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Verite/influence.png
History of the previous versions: Map archive
The map updated every day.
Please read this before post a reply: 1. This is not a war map. It'll not display any conflicts or ship loss. 2. This is not a coalition map. It's colored for viability, not for the relationship between various groups. 2. This is not an exact political map. Some systems and even outposts claimed by one alliance may appear on the territory of the other alliance, which is dominating here by influence. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

A couple of notes for the curious:
1. I've worked out an auto-pilot for generating map and even a way to upload it to EVE-Files, so the map should build and upload itself even in my absence (resolving any possible repeat of the Paladin issue) once I start using the auto-pilot. Maps would go up at 14:00-15:00 or so since the whole thing counts on EVE working, and the map for the day may be incorrect until I manually go over it should EVE be misbehaving that day.
2. In the source code release, besides the source code for the Java map generator, the code for all of my data parsing tools(C++) will be released, the auto-pilot batch file, as will an outdated copy of the EVE DB tables needed to build the map. Also included will be a manual explaining how everything works together and any important things you need to know in setting up your own map. It will be BYOE(bring your own executable) for the 3rd party tools I'm using (MySQL, cURL, and wget) and to make this map you'll need to know a thing or two about MySQL.
3. For those concerned about alliance names covering up each other I've stopped working on it for now. It's a really minor problem and fixing it causes problems for the smaller alliances. If you want to fix it yourself, I recommend installing an outpost.
4. Just like Paladin, I'm not psychic when it comes to outposts since there's no API for listing outposts. I'm using the EVE Strategic Maps data (thanks again Serenity Steele) but that's only updated periodically. So if you add a new outpost, please let me know.
5. Things to do: add a legend.
6. Questions/comments/concerns? Feel free to post something in here. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

So the automated map really becomes.. automated! Never again will we have to scream and complain about the lack of daily updates.

Only to the extent that it draws itself. Eventually it would become outdated as outposts are added, jumps are moved, regions are adjusted, CCP breaks things, Chirbba updates EVE-files, etc. Basically this allows me to leave on vacation (woohoo PAX) for a few days while the map takes care of itself and/or let the map update while I'm sleeping so that you guys don't have to wait until 20:00 or later.
Hopefully at some point CCP will add an API for pulling a list of outposts which is the only significant concern I have right now. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

New colortest, the following alliances get new colors (this should be the last of the color changes for legibility): Exuro Mortis, Aftermath Alliance (sorry guys, didn't see you blending in to EC), Ka-Tet, Oxide (so that you don't blend in with DMC so much).
The autopilot is in charge tomorrow, if the map isn't updated by 15:20 it probably slammed in to the side of a mountain. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

But even with that, a bit TY for your job (*crowd going wild, cheering*), helps us empire whñres to stay a bit "in" on what happens in 0.0, without having to read several CAOD threads (and thereby loose the precious remains of our sanity)
I've also noticed btw, that the lower part of the........UUA-F4-region the tanis/dev alliance is in, is covered with some pure influence. Shouldn't those systems be emitting NPC-sov influence to push it off, or does that irritate the already-insignificant-and-irrelevant tanis influence up there?

No!
1) The map will quickly become very unreadable.
2) If a powerblock breaks up you need to switch colours all over which is really bad for comparing older maps with new ones.
One thing would be really really nice. If someone could write a little program which makes an animation based on the changes in sov. That would look so cooool! Sadly I am not at all competent enough to do such a thing or I would do it.
Great thing that the op took up the code and continues to release the maps every day now. Thanks!

Contact me in-game, I can give you a XML feed for all outposts incl. ownership, so you can automate it.
The feed has ownership of outposts updated daily and new outposts added as people inform me, with a complete check of all regions typically once per week.

Ahh, good catch. Technically that region doesn't have anyone(alliance, NPC, or otherwise) claiming sov on the whole region, so it didn't get built in to the NPC tables. I'll see what I can do about assigning NPC influence there to ward off PURE, and I really am not concerned about Tanis since it's not a real player alliance.

A true animated map would probably require a combination of dark magic and Flash, so I'm guessing something like that isn't likely to happen. However someone could easily take the influence map and make an animated PNG, GIF, Divx, etc out of it to make a crude sov movie. It's been done before. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Any chance you could change Iron back to the old blue shade (#243c7b); pink is a bit bleah.
Also, the inter-region jump lines are hard to see under Frege's colour (might just be me though).
