A ferox can tank almost as well as a drake. It'll miss one large extender (bad) or one hardener/amp (almost as bad) but it can still do it almost as well.
Almost as well means a ferox would likely tank roughly 60-70% of all L4 missions. Missions like AE4 would be fine, up until the bonus room when you really need 3 hardeners and a drake can barely keep up with the DPS against it with the right hardeners.
At any rate, I just use 5x250mm rails, 1x cloak, 1x drone link augment, 1x T2 large booster, 2x tracking computers, 1x sensor booster, 1x rat-specific hardener, 3xMagStab, and a T2 damage control on my gang-support ferox.
Likely when I can start using gang mods I'll swap out one with the cloak since using a cloak for part of your tank, while effective at times, can also lead to some serious problems.
For real mission running I'd swap out one tracking computer for a T2 afterburner and one MagStab for a Cap. Flux Coil, preferably Tech 2. Drop the cloak and put in whatever launcher I can fit, probably an assault. I wouldn't use that for anything past L3 missions unless I'm in a small gang however.
For L4 missions in a drake I'd do this: Highs: 5x heavy launcher 1x medium vampire 1x drone link augment (unless you have scout drone 5 and EW drone 3, minimum)
Mids 3xLarge Shield Extender II 2xRat-specific hardeners
Lows 4xShield Power Relay II
Rigs 3x Core defense field purger
This gives you roughly 207 hp/second peak recharge, minimum, with shield management 3 and shield sys. op. 4, and if you use 2 T2 invulnerability fields, or faction fields, you get a minimum of 61.19% EM, 68.95% thermal, 76.71% kinetic, and 84.48% explosive resistance.
Swapping an SPR2 for a DC2 would drop your tank to 156 hp/sec regen and 66.04/72.83/79.62/86.42 resistances (prior order) while dropping an LSE2 for another Invulnerability 2 will leave you a 163 hp/sec peak regen with 67.83/74.27/80.7/87.13 for resistances.
Either way I don't think the loss of 40-50 HP/sec, 25% of your regen, is worth the gains of a third hardener or the use of a DC2 in most missions.
This ship build obviously will not put out as much DPS as a drake but it's still enough to eventually, with enough ammo, ***** the tanks of many if not most L4 battleships (up to 700k bounty I would imagine), even if you're using T1 drones and not T2s.
