Just because people do everything for killboard Epeen growth now. I rarely kill players unless I'm going to gain ISK from it, or I'm seriously bored, but these days you get little 10 man corps gatecamping gates, wasting about 20 million isk per kill, and getting jack **** in return.
Why do they stare at a gate all day with it bubbled? Killboard.
Just silly. -----+----- Mailing List: Eve Art Store Orders Channel: Eve Art Store

Bubbles and ammo, and usually the victim will pop a lighter ship or two if he knows what he's doing. -----+----- Mailing List: Eve Art Store Orders Channel: Eve Art Store

In general, people use them to keep a tally of how a war's going or as a record of what's happened.
I can see your point, in some instances it's silly - but for a large corp at war a killboard is invaluable.

Actually, I doubt its the killboard that makes them camp gates. Rather its part of the War, or serves another need.
I want EVE to provide the killboard automatically, without external killboards that are subject to missed or altered postings. I see no reason why Eve does not provide this service. Then the stats would be accurate and the killboards might actually mean something.
To the OP: I too only kill when I'm working towards some greater goal. But to my complete frustration and utter lack of understanding, most PVP'rs seem to just want to go blast anything that moves for 'fun'. To me this is the equalivalent of a hunter going into the woods with a 12-pack and a 12-guage, with the only intent to come back with something furry and dead.
Again, I don't think the killboard is the reason for their actions.

Alliances throughout the EVE Online universe use killboards to see what the enemy is using. I can give you a thousand tips, but I will leave you with only this one: it is wise to post all of your death mails.

Actually when we sit at a gate we are looking for the warning lable on the jump gate. (Wrangler...wher did you hide it?) Sometimes when we get really bored we play "I spy with my little eye". And besides the warp bubble is just for for looks. Especially if you put two side by side and they look like......and the pulsating...
Seriously kill boards are fun, and its just a game. Games have scores, winners and losers. Kill ratio's isk lost..isk destroyed. Most ships built the rarest stuff found.
For peeps that kill or fight for a living...its what motivates. Its like when you have humped enough roids or whatever you do...you boast about how will you did. Its the same thing.
Its nice to have something to tell us that..hey I am not doing to bad..or holy crap..i need to find a new profession. What motivates you...to keep playing?

Princess Jodi, I won't even dignify the OP's silly post with a direct response, but I would like to respond to your comment above.
A couple of points:
- Yours is a very limited view on the value of killboards. They mean quite a bit, in fact. They are a tremendously valuable intelligence source for tactics, ship types used, locations of activity, and more.
- We do agree that failure to post losses can skew a few isolated data sets. We have some ideas for amalgamating killboard data that we'll share soon, but we aren't and never will be enforcers of whether people post losses or not.
- We think that the API feeds released by CCP have in fact provided for what I'm sure will be very positive, creative and interesting uses of character data. It therefore seems counter-intuitive that CCP would pull KB functionality back 'inside'.
Best, SghnDubh

I read a devblog (or dev reply, don't recall) a while ago, which stated that they were working on getting rid of killmails, and having ship kills/losses shown in people's character sheets, and possibly also corporation/alliance info.

The fact that they're such a useful tool for identifying enemy ships by their past losses makes use of a public (and therefore, boastable) killboard null for an alliance/corp. -----+----- Mailing List: Eve Art Store Orders Channel: Eve Art Store
