Hello all. Just as the topic states, Im planning on persuing ice mining and see that the path is rather daunting. During some of my 'research' I got a bit stumped on which of the top two exhumers would be more efficient for ice mining. Upfront the Mack has the bonuses ideal for ice mining yet there is the '25% reduction in ice mining duration' which for the life of me doesnt make sense. So on a side note to the upcoming question if anyone can put that to me in a more clear fashion I'd appreciate it. However regarding the two ships and which is best I found that the Hulk has 3 turret slots capable of handling 3 ice mining lasers. The cargo is 1/3 larger as well which would be nice but other than that I cannot determine which would be optimal for ice mining. Price wize both are similar as well (once you break 100mil whats another 4mil isk...).
So perhaps there are some miners out there that can help me out in deciding which ship would be optimal for ice mining. And of course any other valuable information would be much appreciated as I find Eve a game that requires constant research and learning. Thanks in advance.

while im not an expert on the matter, your better bet in my opinion would be to use the Mackinaw. You just have to have good skills, the "25% reduction to ice mining duration" is there because the ship has a base penalty to the duration of each cycle (how often you pull in ice). The more lvls in exhumer the less your penalty (at exhumers 5 it has no penalty). The mackinaw pulls in 2 rocks per laser so you'll be getting 4 per cycle with 2 ice lasers. SO the only drawback it has compared to teh hulk in ice mining really is the cargo hold size, but you should probably be using a pack of huge secure containers and a hauler ideally.

Mack > hulk if you have a hauler. There have been others that have argued that hulk > mackinaw when there are no haulers and you must do it with the barge. Think of it this way: you're getting 1.333(3)(33.33%) more then the hulk in 25% more time. Eh eh? --- Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". It's a templar, an amarr fighter used by shuttles. Tho I hear they don't tank very well. |

You should calculate the ships with the new ice-mining upgrades, the Mack seems to be a lil troubled to fit upgrades + tanking gear, while the hulk isn¦t. Depends on where and how you use it - maybe the lower efficiency of the Hulk can be made up for with it¦s tank, maybe not. Also, if you have a Hulk already, you might want to calc how long you need to mine until you have that extra 100m for the new ship pays off. From plain numbers in yield, Mack > Hulk for ice.

Use the Hulk unless you have Exhumer V.
I cycle Every 3 min and 47 Seconds with not even Best Named Ice upgrades in my Hulk.
Best I can hit with the mack is 4 min 20 running the same gear, and less tank.

Without considering any special circumstances (no haulers, no tank etc etc), statistically a mack will out mine a hulk.
You can fit more upgrades on a hulk and get a better cycle time but a mack mines 2x blocks per laser per cycle where as a hulk only mines one block per laser per cycle.
