I bet it is.
USA teaches nothing of the rest of the world to it's kids. No global history, no global topography, they're famous for it.
I mean, even the NY Times only has 1 page on foreign affairs, most of which centres on Iraq: and that publication is supposed to be of extremely high quality (I'm sure it IS quality stuff, as far as the USA is concerned). American policy creates an inwards view.
foreign knowledge just isnt something USA focuses on. it's a well known phenomenon that the most powerful nation in the world doesnt GIVE jack, or KNOW jack about the rest of the world ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer." |

Apologies, I don't want to step on anyones foot here, but it's kind of a public secret that US education is, well, low compared to other countries'. Things they teach in most regular uni's we get at school here :) That coupled to the fact that everyone can just bring guns wherever they want make it for a sad sad system.
The entire story of teaching intelligent design in some schools is just a good example of the weirdness. The weapons policy is a clear symbol of what's wrong in general. Without wanting to start a political debate here, there are reasons why us Europeans look at US in a funny way :).

foreign knowledge just isnt something USA focuses on. it's a well known phenomenon that the most powerful nation in the world doesnt GIVE jack, or KNOW jack about the rest of the world
So why dont they, when the rest of the world does? Arent the rest of the world in trouble when some americans doesnt know or care about the rest of the world, and their votes affect the military decisions of the USA?
hmmm, difficult terrain: I would say that the majority of ANY country is fairly stupid to begin with, and doesnt know a whole lot about the rest of the world, but still. I wouldnt presume to be able to give you a definite answer but I'll say this:
America is, of course, a VERY big country and it's citizens have the luxury of being able to vacation in their own country almost indefinitely.
Also, I've been to the States on several occaisions, and barring economic business channels like CCN and NBC, there just ISNT a lot of coverage on the rest of the world: I was in NY a few times, and you have to scan the band to get to stations which report news even outside of NY itself.
For such a global power the USA media does a poor job of informing the nation. You can argue that the people dont WANT to know, and the media are just giving what the consumer wants, but that would be the easy way out
There is of course also the element of "we're the USA, we dont need to know anything about the rest of the rest of the world because we are the only superpower left."
Then you have the educational system, and the nationalist pride inherent in the USA. More so than any other western country (Ill leave China, Russia and some other states out of this) patriotism and nationalism are ingrained practically from birth in the USA. You see this in hollywood, education and the media. Transformers, Spiderman, to name but two, have blatant patriotist references in them (transformers was axed by critics over here in the Netherlands for being almost a propaganda flick, and Spiderman has a LOT of scenes of spidy in front of american flags.)
The educational system obviously favours national history over world history (though I cant really state this as 100% fact: someone chime in)
The media I've already referenced.
It would seem that nationalism and patriotism in themselves are not a bad thing of course. If you take them as a form of state policy you DO see that peoples views become fairly limited... ergo you will see Americans talking about the rest of the world without the faintest of clues.
now I'm going to shut up... because these kinds of conversations have a tendency to devolve quite fast. I'm not saying ANYTHING in this post is true or fact or whatever, just bulletting some points I've seen through the years.
Anyone else care to chime in? ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer." |

Actually I believe the news are giving people what the government wants. They are using the media to convince people there are threats in the world, and some americans doesnt seem to have the knowledge to critically judge if this information is accurate or not.
US media are currently telling people the threat is Iran, using the exact same methods as they did in the last war. This is really, really scary to me. Your country or my country could very well be next.

I was once at a conferance at the European Union headquarters in Brussels and was embarrssed that i didnt know the intricacies of current political policy and diplomacy that were being discussed. I had like most Europeans felt like i had a fairly good backround knowledge. After watching your You Tube clips i realise that knowledge Europeans consider essential isnt even on the radar of the average Joe in the US. Though in their defence it was probably heavily edited;and a more astute audience in say Washigton DC might have been more clued up about current affairs.

The Chasers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdljzbHELmM&mode=related&search= have a habit of this
The US is a very inward looking nation, so it should come as no suprise that many are ignorant of the goings on in their own country and the world. I think this goes a long way to explaining American pride, and its trigger reactions to 'attacks' on internal/external issues.

Actually as a whole I think we're all quiet ignorant of what goes on in the world if all we rely on is our education system and the media
I wonder, for instance, how much time the UK news spends on foreign affairs that dont either concern a juicy fear inducing story about extremists or a natural disaster.
The BBC news these days teaches you very little, if thats your only eye into the world then you have a tiny view on world events, I don't see how the USA is so very different from that, I suspect the only reason UK news screened the shuttle landing this time was in case it blew up, I can remember many previous landing when they didnt even bother showing it, much of the rest of it seems to be adverts for other programmes, and SKY news simply shows the same news as BBC, god forbid they should compete and try and show something interesting. 24 hour news has been a disaster for news reporting IMO, we no longer report news, we just report life or more likely, celebrity, what happened to a story being newsworthy ?
Watching European news is an eye opener, you get a lot of news from a lot of Euro countries and further out that are just never mentioned on UK news, so I wouldnt hold us up as paragons. I'd be interested to watch Indian or Chinese, or Iraq news and see the difference.

While I understand most of the opinions here, I have to oint out they are wrong. Its not that it isnt taught in schools. Maybe not to the degree its taught in other countries schools, but the biggest problem in America is Americans just dont care.
Once they get through the requirements of school thats all she wrote. They dont care about the world around them. Its football and American Idol, buy the biggest house and nicest car you can afford (Whether you can afford it or not doesnt matter, just get it!). Most Americans in my experience are just concerned with the "here and now" so to speak and only in so far as it pertains to them. They dont care whats happening in the next city, let alone whats happening beyond our countries borders!

Yes, thats the message Im trying to put out there. People should go to alternate news sources, because they shouldnt trust the american ones. They simply cant anymore.
I suggest the international Reuters. Just visiting that site should be a real eye opener to a lot of people. And I believe its unbiased news.

Just an honest question, but what do kids spend their time at school at then ? We saw the complete world history in detail in about two years (US history being only a fraction of that, honestly a week's work) + we have to learn at least 2 foreign languages from the moment we enter the first grade ...
Out of curiosity, What is teached, how many hours exactly of what in a random grade, let's say highschool, first year.

Most of us aren't that stupid. But "Like any nation" we have a few bulbs that don't shine quite as bright as the others. I don't know what idiot came up with the 1 in 5 number, probebly a very poor sample or something.

I'll give you that our idiots tend to be unusually stupid, but those people are just a disgrace to us all... ___________

Yes, they obviously picked only the people who couldnt answer to make it a funny clip. I dont think there even was someone who answered correctly in the clip.
So yeah, take it with a bit of healthy skepticism. But still, I dont think a single person in this country (Sweden) wouldnt be able to point out where our country is. Would be fun to try though... doesnt take more than a video camera. But I think people would look at me like im crazy for asking a question like that...

In many cases it is highly dependent on what state you are in. For example, here in New York, the math progcession went Sequential I, II, and then III, and now it is just Math A and Math B (then comes PreCalc), but most other states still use the much antiquated Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II system.
