I'm relatvely new to the game and I'm trying to figure out what ship to train up for and fly. I'm to be doing pvp. Some of it solo, and some of it in small/large blobs.
From reading through the forums I understand that Caldari ships are absolutely useless for any kind of pvp, so I guess those are completely out of the question. But of the rest, which one is the absolute most powerful ship that can easily own anything else out there?

Actually there is such a ship, but you will never be able to get one.
From Wikipedia:
Polaris Legatus
The Polaris Legatus is a Jovian Frigate exclusively owned by those who have access to the Polaris system, a system that is designed to be the Game Masters headquarters and inaccessible by anyone not authorized to be there. The Legatus has 99% resistances to every damage type in the game, over a million hitpoints of armor and shields, and has the ability to fit a turret that can do extreme amounts of damage. This ship is often used by GMs that are not participating in an in-game event, such as resolving server issues or responding to in-game petitions.

Well yeah, if they know of it... That's the point of this thread. I want the information so I won't waste my time trying them all. You guys aren't being very helpful so far...

Same questions asked in every MMO..."what's the best class, race, skills, etc"... nothing new here...
Learn the game...you'll eventually find a playing style that you like..and go with it...

The point is, eve is a balanced game. As such, anything overpowered or unfair will be ruthlessly beaten to death with the nerf bat. Everything is good and effective when used right.
Now, I'm not telling you that a Caracal can best a Megathron. Seriously, pick your targets mate, but I AM saying that any well fit BS is still pretty good compared to any other well fit BS (or any other class) as long as you use it in the way it is intended.
Fly what you like.

First off, welcome. I apologize for the other posters, they think that anyone who doesn't know everything is a troll. Your question is perfectly acceptable.
There is no ship that can do everything. I assume you have played typical MMOs like wow, or eq2. Imagine the ship types as classes. Each ship type has a certain role. For example, interceptors are small and fast, which makes them perfect for helping the squad slow down the enemy. Dreadnoughts, on the other hand, are slow and huge, meant solely for blowing up player star stations. It all depends on what role you like. If you insist on soloing, a battleship setup is a good place to start. It's a very versatile class. Like I said, there's no best ship. Decide what role you want to fulfill, then go from there.

To the OP: Erm.. taking you seriously? With THAT name? You can't be serious.. mr. forumtrolling alt ^^
Anyway, the answers are: - Fly what you like. It can all change soon(tm). - Use the right tool for the job at hand.
Oh, and - Never buy what you can't afford to lose. - Always be careful, because the game is full of people who want to hurt you (oh, that was very mildly put).

Wrong, it only has like 1 midslot. So it can't tackle, at all. ___________

Best ship in EVE is probably the Enigma. Or the Eidolon.
But you can't fly them. Too bad.

best ships? Depends-
if u wanna solo and choose your fights, a vagabond.
if u wanna fly a ceptor, crow.
wanna farm isk? raven.
fleet and small gang bubble maker? sabre.
those are just common knowledge, not very disputable. They only become controversial when you put them in specific contexts, which is what most PvP are all about.

Going to make it simple , think of a game of Rock , scissor , Paper except that in Eve a lot more will figure in to who wins a fight
*1 on 1 or is this a gang fight *beyond the ship how has it been decked out , meaning what modules are you using *how skill are you vs the other pilots *what type of fighting style do you prefer and what are you looking to do? solo, small gang, fleet, camps?
would say that if its know what exactly what you are looking to do its easier to point you to a possible ship choice.
example all the races have decent BS for group snipe. some races have stronger heavy assaults then others. if you want strong drone ships that normally rules out Caldari. etc etc etc

Why do you all knock caldari? they're just mission runners basically :P.
Merlin - lvl 1's Caracal - Lvl 2/3's Drake - lvl 3/4's Raven - lvl 4's.
Each race has its ups and downs, you can get anything from any race really, but some races have ships that are better than others. It is really what you want to do...
If its PvP then you have masses of options still, do you wanna stun ships, stop them, kill them, tank damage. Choose a ship and stick with it, nearly no ship is good without at least one other (unless you have lvl 5 everything). Especially if you dont know what you're up against.
