Is appearance a major factor in how people choose ships ? Are there ships you simply refuse to fly because of the way they look.
In my case the answer is yes - I could find a use for an exequeror but just won't, ever. The frankly silly appearnaces of Gallente frigates drove me early on to fly Amarr or Caldari.
So compared to a ships attributes how much does appearance matter - if CCP introduced your perfect ship but it gave it looks only a mother could love would you fly it ?

It matters to me near 100%
Which is why I only fly gallente and have only ever done so. I am contemplating training amarr now though, since there is very little left for me to train in gallente ships and the amarr ships have the shiny factor.
As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Edited by: Manus Stuprare on 04/09/2007 10:37:09 It used to matter to me a lot more than it does now, I've been forced to compromise my sense of aesthetics in order to be effective. I remember early on thinking I'd never be seen dead in a Dominix, but then I fell in love with drones so the Domi was something I just had to train for. I'm sure I'd enjoy flying them (and many other ships) a lot more if they weren't so ugly though.
One thing that really bugs me is the number of graphical flaws that seem to be a result of sheer carelessness. Off the top of my head I can think of missing textures on the Arbitrator line, the extra boosters on the Sacrilege not lining up right, one of the fins on the Malediction being bent.. there are many others. I'm sure it'd be trivial for CCP to fix em but nobody there has ever bothered :( -------------- Poisoning the Chalice: Smartbombs as a Counter to Nos |

The main reason I chose Amarr race was the fact that most ships had blue contrails
I'm just glad I don't fly ugly Caldari and Minmatar

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 04/09/2007 11:09:55 If it were for say, frigs and such, for a performance reason or soemthing... not really, but if it's nice looking that's a bonus.
Oh maybe I should add that I like the chaotic look of some minmatar ships, like the rupture/muninn... something just seems powerful from the muninn's look, some ships in general I don't really like... exequror for example, but what other T1 cruiser gets a bonus to remote reps?
If it's a capital ship I'd be partially the same, first I'd consider what I want to stare at because spending all that training for something you don't like the look for just for a lil bonus or something... is "eh" unless you want it for that reason. But performance would still come into play.
Like um, how to word this... If it meant an extra month or so to sit in a Naglfar properly(Projectile + citadel) because I wanna stick with minmatar ships and like the way it looks despite the worse tank and self defense, sure I'd take it over say... a Moros, even though the Moros is much better in performance all around. Drones, better tank, bit less time to get into as it only needs Hybrids, etc.
Just an example. <3 the Hel, and speaking of Hel, shame on Stradivarious for popping the bestower I bumped 224km(took an hour +) to a pos with an incursus I hijacked from a fix member.

in my younger days i specificly trained for amarr af's as i wanted to fly the vengeance ( spinners ftw ! ) but now it doesn't matter what the ship looks like. performance and role is more important than looks, even if it does look like a giant metal turd.

Generally I find that ships that are the sexiest are also very effective. (Crusader, Taranis, Huginn, Vaga, here's lookin' at you )
Yes I said Huginn, I love that raggedy-ass shopping cart.

80-90% tbh I think the only ship I've ever flown that I thought was downright ugly was the harbinger... and i've flown a ferox and moa.
I trained minmatar just to fly the hurricane because it's one of the most awesome-looking ffs, and i'm avoiding training command ships because there aren't any that I like (phophecy hull is too fat, and cyclone hull is like a Gilette V)
I mean.. I'm flying a maelstrom right now, to run lvl4s in, simply because i hate the raven and the maelstrom looks EPIC.
One of EVE's strongest points is the amazing graphics and i'd hate to spoil that by flying a ship that i can't bear to look at. __________________________________

Edited by: VicturusTeSaluto on 04/09/2007 11:59:04 Somewhat... It was fun to kill people in a ship with a phallus on the end(Incursus)... I love the look of the Myrm and it helped me pick that ship before I really knew how good it was.
I won't fly the Dominix because it looks like something that you'd find in a toilet bowl. Though I might fly one eventually once I have nothing else to do.

aww. i used to think it looked rather obscene, but once you've flown it for a while, well, i actually quite like the way it looks now it does look like a whale, but a sexy one

It used to matter to me a lot but not so much anymore. Well, It still matters but I have come to the point where I can't really LET it matter if I want to be effective. For instance, I refused to fly a myrmidon for a while but then came to the conclusion that the ship itself was just to good to not fly. I still can't wait to fly a megathron partially because I love the way it looks.

It's amazing just how much variety there is in peoples tastes, and tolerances for staring at an eyesore for hours on end.
I loath the Incursus family and the silly probe thing on the nose, and the Rifter,vagabond/stabber are too junkshop like for credibility. Yet other folks like them, whilst I think the Prophecy is pretty sweet looking and my favourite mini frigates are the breacher and probe.
I dont mind ugly - Phoon, Dominix, Osprey and Raven are fine, but stupid looking is a problem. This is why I will only fly a Moa, Exequeror or Maller at gunpoint (although the slightly modified and black Sacrilege is nice).

I think somethings I have scraped off the bottom of my shoe are better looking than the Moa. The Osprey is truly ugly I know but in a functional, industrial sort of way and it is not embarassing to fly. The Moa on the other hand looks like nothing - except possibly a dinosaur about to relieve itself on a lampost.

It matters to me. I hated the looks of most Gallente frigs when I started out, so I was messing around with all races frigs to try them out and see what I liked best (except Amarr). I stumbled across the Rifter, and, well, fell in love with both the looks, flying style, preformance and autocannons. Been flying Minmatar ever since, but unfortunately the best looking ships are the Rifter (and the T2 variants, the Jaguar and the Wolf), the Hurricane (I love the looks of the thing. Maybe someday there'll be a jet-black T2 version of the Hurricane with 7-8 AC mounts and a falloff bonus. Hopefully coinciding with me training Minmatar Cruiser V and Battlecruisers V, heh heh), and the Typhoon/Maelstorm are also very nice.
Cyclone is decent, as well as the Stabber (which takes a while to get used to) and the Rupture (which is ugly, but has a sort of charm. It does look like a old pirate ship, in a way.) Tempests I can't really stand. I've actually bought both minmatar interceptors, undocked in them, docked back, repackaged them, and sold them back. Just couldn't stand the look of them, they look dreadful.
If I wanted to fly an Inty, i'd definitely train for a Malediction.

Since I don't stare at my ship when I play (too many other things to look at... like what's on the overview), I don't care what it looks like. I'm usually zoomed out pretty far from it anyway.

I believe that looks matter... for about 3 seconds... Then you start to go on with what you were about to do... kill people or do missions or whatever...
The looks of the explosions that you make other peoples ships turn into on the other hand is very important... Right now i'm in the testing phase... Which means i'm trying to blow up every ship i can to find out what ship makes teh sexiehzt explosion...

I was at a toss up between a Hurricane and a Cyclone for my next major ship. While there are some good logical reasons to go Rupture-> Hurricane skill set wise, I can't say the looks on the Hurricane didn't influence me.
As much as people hate on Minmatar ships for the looks, I really dislike the Caldari style.

Most Minmatar ships are pretty ugly, but it fits so well with the background. Like American muscle cars vs. European agility and eligance. So when I fly minnie ships, to me they are supposed to be mean and ugly lookin. So actually, I think minmatars have the best looking ships.
However, regardless of that, matars have the best looking BS (maelstrom) and the best looking frigate (Rifter) _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped.
