Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 04/09/2007 20:34:12 Greetings Community!
Today, I introduced my boss to eVe and the boss loved it and we were talking about the usual ups and downs with the game.
Ups: 1) Market interface - like equity trading. Buy and sell; profits = gains - taxes. 2) Customization over crafting kits - POS, modules, ships, tech 2. 3) No grind - skill goes up even when you are sleeping.
Downs: 4) Nonconsensual killings - sometimes lead to griefings 5) POS wars 6) Blobs 7) Lag - a little. Which servers do not lag in RL? 8) Farmers
So we were talking about how CCP could help players with badness in eVe and we thought of HGE. eVe - Healthy Gaming Experience. See, I think of my fellow community's health. If the community fall sick, who is going to pay CCP?
HGE could help players in POS wars and blobs. It would make players less blobby in POS wars. It would encourage small warfare.
Wait. Healthy Gaming Experience? What is that? Well, it is nothing new and service providers have been providing HGE in their games. It is the player's and their service provider's responsibility to ensure healty gaming experience.
HGE is good because it allows players to have break and carry out their responsibility in RL - personal hygiene, family, etc. It is the same like co-workers taking 10 minutes break after every hour working in front of PCs.
eVe Healthy Gaming Experience: 9) Chat interface pops up text every hour to say "You have been playing for X hours." 10) No penalties to players within the first hour of play. 11) After the first hour, players will receive 5% penalty to skill points. Penalty will accummulate every 30 or 60 minutes after the first hour and caps at 25%. The penalty will apply randomly to one of the highest ranking active skill at the time. 12) Penalty will disappear and reset once the player logs off for 10 minutes.
So community, let us support healthy gaming in our favorite MMOG, eVe. Remember, winners do take breaks.
Friends of the community. :) --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

The Road to Serfdom appears in EVE
China seeks to 'limit game hours'
The Chinese government has clamped down on the amount of time youngsters can spend playing online games, according to the official news agency Xinhua. Under-18s who play for more than three consecutive hours a day will have limits imposed on the amount of points they can score, the agency reported.
Online game companies based in China have been given three months to install the so-called anti-addiction software.
It is part of an on-going attempt to limit how long people are online.
A recent report from the China National Children's Centre said that 13% of under-18s who used the web were addicted to online gaming.
Unhealthy game time
Online gaming is hugely popular in China. Beijing-based analyst firm CCID Consulting estimates that there are 17.8 million fee-paying gamers in China, about 20% of which are under 20 years old. A farther 10% are younger than 16.
Chinese gaming firms such as NetEase and Shanda Interactive Entertainment have until 15 July to install software which will halve the number of points gamers can score if they play for more than three hours, said the report.
Determined gamers who play for more than five hours will get no points at all and face an on-screen warning that they are entering "unhealthy game time".
In order to verify their age, gamers will be required to register for games using their real names and identity card number.
This is the latest salvo in an ongoing war against alleged net addiction.
Willing to listen
Last month, the Chinese authorities banned any new cyber cafes from opening this year in an effort to combat addiction. It has also set up a department, charged with monitoring the content of games.
Games which offer a view of history at odds with the official version in China, such as the Swedish game Heart of Iron which shows Tibet as an independent state, have been banned.
Boot-camps have been set up to provide military-style training in an effort to wean youngsters away from the net.
Julien Pain, of the press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders, said he was unsure of how the Chinese government would impose the new restrictions.
"With peer to peer networks gamers can download any version they want," he said.
It is unclear whether the Chinese authorities intend to extend the restrictions to games developed in the West.
If it did, Mr Pain said gaming firms would be willing to listen.
"China is such a big and important market. Companies are ready to make compromises. We have seen it with Google, Yahoo and Microsoft and I can see gaming companies tailoring games for the Chinese market," he told the BBC News website .

Edited by: Plutoinum on 04/09/2007 21:07:37 Wonder, how serious you are. I mean difficult to believe you are serious, but who would type so much just to make a joke ?
If you are serious: Many customers wouldn't play a MMORPG, where their chars get penalties after playing for 1 hour. And besides that, what can you do within one hour in those games ? Ok, in EVE maybe play the market or go on a really short trip in 0.0 with a few mates.
I'd say it as a waste money. If I got only one hour, I'd rather play a shooter, get some frags, be satisfied and log off.
Btw.: I've tried some strategy browsergames that offered only a limited number of turns per day that you have used up quite fast and then you have to wait. That was crap. It is not my kind of thing. I solved that by starting with 5 different games at once, but was not really cool either. And now I don't play them anymore.

So in one day your boss was able to grasp those nuances of Eve, enough to warrant a meaningfull discussion? Clearly your discussion was and is at the level of a one day player.
Aside, it's great to see you in action, posting crap and watch the subsequent flames, but would you not think that these days there are enough trolls and idiots posting that you would rise above them and post something useful?

Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 04/09/2007 21:50:54 Oh my god. I didn't expect such atrocious replies. I am utterly hurt by you people except some really meaningful replies by Dant and Plutoinum.
The boss is not new to MMOs and the thought of healthy gaming is good to fight against farmers, lag and blobbing. If players have to take break, blobs would be non-persistent.
Plutoinum, I am serious. If I am not, I would not be typing that much to talk about HGE. The chat interface pops up text every hour to say "You have been playing for X hours" and the penalty could come after 2 hours of non-stop gaming then followed by a 15 minutes break to reset penalty. Penalty values are open for tweaking. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!
