Do you have fun playing Eve, or is a placeholder in your life until something else comes along?

EVE is the only MMORPG I can see myself playing. WoW probably included.

Ditto. Ghey, quest-based PvE WoW definitely included.

I have this addiction to logging in and then doing nothing. I was on for three hours last night in a quite inebriated state and all I manage to do was insult my corpmates, 1 agent mission and agree to do some PvP! |

No - I hate it. All the hours that I'm logged on I keep saying - 'I wish I was doing something else....'

It's pretty much the only game I've played since last April. I've still got SWKOTOR sat on my shelf unopened. As for other MMOGs, I don't think so. I've looked at a few but none seem to have the same depth of gameplay as Eve.
I'm in this for the long haul. Or at least until my wife threatens divorce.

Right now most of the my time playing eve is spent chatting rather than playing....Even when I am doing agent missions and mining I don't have any fun. I haven't tried much PVP, but I'm sure that would get old pretty quickly too. EVE is pretty much a placeholder until better games are released. ------------------

Edited by: alar1c on 10/02/2004 17:16:33 Yes, I must be for the hours upon hours that I mine or farm. The people are what makes this game great for me (and the ships, layout, graphics....... )
What I don't understand, is for a growing player base (ccp IS doing a good job). Why all the disillusioned must flock to this fourum and moan about the game until there accounts run out

I signed up to Eve not too long ago, and I'm making good tracks through the game, but I'm not daft.
I see CCP's cunning ploy with the time trained skills, I see the aim they've got, and I see they're making good progress towards it.
To be honest, brutally honest, and I think others will agree if they look at it with honesty...
Eve has one of the shallowest foundations I've played in an MMO.
The options open are wide and varied, yes, but it essentially revolves around the same thing, that of travelling, and spending long periods of time doing the equivalent of nothing.
I just got a Badger MkII to go hauling with, but I've realised it's not worth trying to do trade-runs, as the profit margins are too small, and the time involved is too great.
I tried to find a few good fields that I could mine myself, but most of the .9 and above ones are stripped, so I can't do AFK mining. This is fine, but again, the time involved in taking the Badger to a field, ditching containers, taking to station, getting shuttle, taking shuttle to my mining ship, returning to containers, mining, ditching at station, getting hauler, hauling ore, ditching ore, getting miner, rinsing and repeating.
What a huge timesink. It's not even very rewarding.
There is combat, but I'm not a combat fan, having come from Neocron which was FPS based. I've had enough of combat.
There is the construction side of things, but you need resources for that, which involves mining or looting.
I'm part of a good Corp, sound guys, but my worth is even less now I'm part of a Corp, and frankly, honestly, I'm finding it hard to set myself on something that's going to keep me occupied.
There is also such a huge lack of interaction and Roleplay. Because we can communicate over any distance, I don't know.. Kind of ruins it for me... You could say.. "Go meet them then.." but why? The time involved to go and meet someone makes it worthless.
At least in Neocron, for example, you could cover the entire map in a jiffy, using a vehicle, or running, or using a GeneRep, and then go sit in a cafe or bar and chat to your colleague whilst you have a drink.
Nice that, but not here.
So what do I want from Eve?
Well, I do enjoy it. Maybe I'm just frustrated at the time involved, mainly because it's obvious CCP have taken the most direct route possible to increase funds and keep people playing.
Other MMO's tend to have to provide chunky content for you to keep you playing, but CCP has done it by the skill level alone. Which is cheeky, but sensible for a company to do.
*Sighs*
So I'm sitting staring at my Badger, having covered fifteen different Solarsystems trying to find a good field to mine, had no success, wasted four hours, and am logging off again, wondering why I bothered starting in the first place.
Good game though, lovely graphics, nice system.
Maybe just not my cup of tea?

if you don't wake up, i'll have to stop kissing you. all that flailing has made you sleepy. you rest while i untie you. stay here until they find you. My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

i really love this game. there is so much to do and see..and blow up! the fact that you can be anything you want is just amazing. granted certain professiosn have consequences, but its the same way in real life. the graphics are soooo pretty sometimes i just fly around and explor to look at different planets.
one of my favorite things to do is experiment with ship fittings. the vast combinations for this is just staggering. granted some ships are better suited for certain roles, but thats cool. its what they were desinged for. and then finaly finding a wicked setup and fine tuning it is the best " your tachyon strikes angel depretender wrecking for 861.2.." stuff like that makes my day. and it only gets better when i find a counter balanced weapon stabilizer or overdrive injector 1 in its neat little can.
i love how the market is player run. yeah i know people with insane crazy orders muck things up..but its the same way IRL.
i have yet to start a production business , and someday i might. who knows. i just love the fact that i have that option if i want it.
granted yeah some things are kinda buggy and dont work right. but WTF, this is a huge MMORPG, contained in one world and not broken up like EQ or FF11( or is it 13?) so what do you expect when 6800 people from around the world are logged in? yeah the system hick-ups but so f00ken what. deal with it. and if you loose a ship to lag. boohoo. i guess you will have something to work towards again. i know something like that will happen to me someday. yeah ill be angry but hey, it happens and it gives me a new goal.
i think CCP has done a fantastic job. i played in beta Phase 7 and 8, went live in july. i love this game and everything about it.
to new players, dont give up. there is a lot to explore out there. to old players, there is still more to explore. go hunt NPC youve not hunted before or explore the landmark sites.
eve is huge. go. play. have fun.

I have tried just about every other MMORPG on the market and found them tedious and repetative. I know many would say the same of EVE but I just don't feel that way about EVE. I think it's mostly as other people have said. It's the people that make this game great for me.
This game has come a long way but still has a long way to go, but I think I could see myself playing this game for quite some time.

Edited by: Jayad on 10/02/2004 18:51:25 Maloch, atleast you tryed to enjoy this great slow burner.
Call it a dev ploy but still the time involved must be an essential ingredient to emulate a sucessfull union of different dynamics where (As we have often noticed) is extreamly hard to ballance. People can thrive in eve but under "Logical" restrictions i think necessary to create a believable virtual economic environment. I agree though that its not 100% achieved but makes gradual improvements all the time.
Its just preference i guess, building this virtual character is my "Hobbie" i enjoy building my assets and to roleplay a good reputation with my piers, i could reap the rewards of my troubles maybe a month later but hell, that (although the extream) can be the time scale of eve and i find meeting a long goal fun as long as you invent different ways of reaching that point. ie, dont mine the same system, make the same stuff, trade the same items, NOT FUN. The frame work is laid before us, then its got to be US that moulds it for our needs.
I admit i do things the hard way, not part of a mega corp/alliance, but the dual corp enterty i belong to (Insidious-R & HIVE) works fine. The people make it fun..... its so true.

I'll repeat something that has been said many times, Eve is basicly a very pretty chat program. I'll log on sometimes and wont know why but I'll get in a conversation with my corpmates about something and next thing I know it's been an hour. I used to run agent missions to raise cash but that was screwed up, though I think they've imporved it now. Unless some changes are made netween now and the release of WoW guess where I'll be going.

Eve: My wife thinks Eve gets more attention than her. I know Eve is always changing. She tries to make me happy. She completes me. I find new things to do with Eve. Sometimes I cry some times I laugh but she is always there when I need to have some fun. You can travel her. You can abuse her, blow up some npc . There are some crazy people that work together and play Eve. Eve has been very good to me.... --------------------------
