I for one having been apart of this game for oh 3 years nowish.. Im wondering why it continues to grow..
From my point, the "end game" the most fun part of the game for most hardcore gamers.. is broken.. (fleet lag pos lolerfare etc etc)
Are these new pilots.. just sitting in empire grinding missions actually having fun and enjoying the game? im not exactly sure what is attracting new players to this game. -Sweet sig- We are Recruiting |

Well, the LACK of an end-game is what makes it attractive to some people. And those type of people are the kind that don't get bored easily. Hence, EVE grows. Simple. _

Your definition of end game ( i can assure you) is not the same for everyone. Many have your end game as a means to their end game. Or not even considering this perspective at all.

You know, not everyone wants to participate in 0.0 warfare. Maybe people are having fun doing, say, any other activity in EVE ever. Small gang warfare, lowsec pirating, trading, corporation management. Because it lacks serious competitors. You can post whatever you want here that won't make anything change. EVE have the monopoly on sci-fi PVP games.
What's a good sci-fi game with PVP contents? Eve.

Marketing, advertising, new content and recent scandals is why Eve has grown.More people are aware of the product.
I don't mean to sound dumb but, imo ,even the negative press has brought more people to the game.
Plus, everytime there is a new expansion or content we get more subscriptions because of trial accounts.
When walking in stations arrives I expect a huge increase in subscribers.

Edited by: Lilian Long on 05/09/2007 16:54:19 Most newbies don't know anything about fleetbattles. They have other things in mind during their first months and some people really like mission running, mining and all that stuff and could do that forever. ( Don't know why though ^^)
Then we have the addicted, who play anyway, no matter what happens, even if they get angry over the game.
Then we have those that have at least no big client performance issues in mega-blobs, because they have a 2006/2007 PC. They maybe don't mind some module lag or a crashing node once a week.
Then we have those, who adapt, get out of alliance pos stuff and just roam around for fun.

1.Advertizing. they have advertizing on all the major gaming sites that I go to.
2. If you are able to stay past the 14 day trial you have probably realized the complexity of this game, and you don't suffer from ADD.
3. The forums (Stop laughing and bear with me). The people are generaly very helpful. the rookie help and the regular help channels are monitored by CCP or player volunteers. Really good stuff.
All in all it;s a really good game, it allows you to take many paths and you do not have to conform to anything. you can be a good guy or a bad girl ;-p.

Its growing simply because its THE BEST GAME available in ALL WAYS!
It is the best game! We have the best devs!
Its simply the best in so many ways that a few problems cant budge its position at all!
For me its only EVE! And believe me! I always give online games a chance to proove themselves. Not that I would leave EVE, but its always worth trying something else. And I cant say I am all that impressed with the games on the market. Not the "old" ones, or the new ones like LOTRO or DDO..

The "end game" ...
Some people are shooting pos and doing fleet battles in 0.0. Some other people have fun roaming through low sec. Others just want to hang out 4-5 hours at the weekend and not 4-5 hours per day!
Not everyone is a hardcore gamer.
Eve is growing because more player join the game than leave it. I am not surprised by that. It is a good game, and its fame is slowly spreading. With the ambulation project it will hit BIG I think. But CCP must make sure that the hard- and software is capable of handling all the onslaught of new players otherwise it will become only a huge lagfast!
Eve is growing because it is a good game and also because their playerbase is mature (uhm, exclude CAOD) and also because CCP is listening to their players (look at the Rorqual thread for example).

I wanted to touch on this subject before my real post. The issues arent with the client imo in fleet battles. I have a very nice system, on fibre (20meg down, 5meg up) and I live in NY. I can handle EQ2 w/ 80 people around me all casting spells. In eve, if I get in certain (not all) 0.0 systems with more then 50people in a blob fighting on a gate, I will either a) Desynch, b) lag out on grid load for 5 minutes at a time, or if I am on grid before the enemy force once they start loading grid ill just get bumped to desktop.
As for why new players join? I can only say that for me, while playing eq2 I realized one thing. There is NOTHING to strive for in traditional MMO's. Lets see, I can craft to make money, to be able to level in decent gear, to get higher levels to get better gear, to get the end game level to get end game gear to do what...
gear other people until the next expansion comes out. Then rinse and repeat.
Games like DAoC, WoW, WaR at least hold my attention longer.. I can say it doesn't feel good to lose a 300 million setup because 10 assclowns decided to camp a gate, but at the same time, in daoc, wow, when you die, its a big ol' "who cares". Why continue on a path with little risk vs reward?
in eve I risk my 300m rig, 2 out of 10 times I will get a nice item like maybe gistii mwd. in DAoC I don't risk anything, and I get exp/Realm Points that I can spend on abilities.. but there is no real issue with dying other then repair costs. Ive had the same templated suit for almost 2 years, there is no changing the world around you. I mean in daoc sure you can take over some keeps, siege down an enemys land and control it.. but then what? The exp isnt any better then finding a nice camp in some other non pvp zone, the money can be, but there is no real world changing events like there is in eve.

Main growth in the last year of two has come from the effects of the isk-gtc trade.
Multiple accounts funded not by the $$ but by isk.... people having 3-10 accounts... where as normaly 1 maybe 2 is all they would be prepared to commit to if there were $$ involved in funding them.
Obviously the 'free to play' market has been successful during that time frame, a premium mmo with good (ish) support... that isn't a korean grindfest has proven quite a draw.
Ofc not quite as popular as most... as there are a few that won't commit to farming X ammount of isk a month to fund there account, but still... a big draw to most.
Also to note... since the advertisement blitz.. there's hardly been significant increases in the playerbase imho.. i see largely the same ammount of people logged in that were logged in 6 months ago at X times of the day... im sure not what ccp had hoped for... they can only live of XXX ammount of what they say the playerbase is inceasing by for so long before people start wondering why there is allways 17-18k players logged in at 6am gmt everyday, or 20 something thousand 12 hours later ect....
While the concurrent player record was broken for the first time in many a moon.. care to remember, labour day in the us.... probaly the most boring nothing else to do holiday in the us... i even had guys on in one of my alt corps that normaly only show there faces at the weekend online nearly all day.... next day the numbers logged on in the morning and evening were the same numbers they have been for about the last 6 months...
What ccp need to concentrate on doing is getting there 190k subscribers actualy logging in.. moves like removing the sell order forums and taking it all in game are a positive step in the right direction for doing that...
Atm with an 190k base and the average log being 28k (ish) per day... that would largely suggest a 'very' casual base... which clearly isn't the focus of ccp.. given the structure of the content added over the last few years;/ ______

Why EVE grows: * CCP has done a good job of advertising the game. I see EVE advertisements periodically on web sites and that was the tipping point that got me to try it -- 14 day free trial, what did I have to lose?
* CCP has also done a good job of continuing to improve the game. I get the feeling that they are really reinvesting all available money back into the game, whereas Planetside or even WOW clearly are not. Planetside is a better comparison, really, because I think it has a similar sized audience (or used to), but Planetside is dying because SOE does not reinvest in the game. They take $10 net profit, re-invest $1 back into the game and pocket the other $9 for investment elsewhere -- that's my impression. I'm personally impressed by CCP's dedication to improvements. Same thing with Cornered Rat Studios and World War II Online. EVE and WW2O are quite similar in the way they continue to invest in improvements and I'd say that's why these games are still alive while some other, once popular games are dead or dying.
* There's apparently still a market for really boring PvE.
Quote: Are these new pilots.. just sitting in empire grinding missions actually having fun and enjoying the game? im not exactly sure what is attracting new players to this game.
Personally, I'm about ready to quit.
Reasons why EVE is growing slowly and not quickly:
* Missions are mind numbingly boring. You basically just loadout your ship and manage your power. The battles aren't very dynamic at all.
* 0.0 corporations are inaccessible. Everyone is afraid of spies, so unless I know someone IRL, it seems I'm not going to get into an established 0.0 corporation. I see no point in joining a high sec corporation since that's what I'm in now -- the newbie corp! Newbies are restricted to some really boring content until they build up enough skill points to attempt to prove that they aren't an alt and thus a spy.
* PvP is inaccessible to newbies. We can run around with throw-away tech 1 frigates and accomplish basically nothing. We could run around in slightly less disposable tech 1 cruisers and still accomplish mostly nothing, as most gatecamps and so forth are done in battlecruisers, battleships and groups that will kick our ass. I have a battlecruiser but I can't afford to lose it and I think I'll go insane before reaching Level IV missions and a battleship that would allow me to afford to lose battlecruisers.
* There is no "off the beaten path" PvP encounters. In an RPG, you can stay off the roads, sneak around the back fields and look for fights you can handle with just 1-2 people. In EVE, there is no "off the beaten path". You MUST follow the road, which is to say, the gates, so you can only ever engage in big group fights, which is a problem if you don't have a big group.
* PvP is non-tactical. In an FPS or RPG, you can run in out of range, you can hide behind rocks and trees, there's a lot of room for dynamic action. In EVE, the battle comes down to three things: ship loadout, group size and personal skill, however, the significance of personal skill drops to 0 as group size gets bigger (most of the "personal skill" in EVE PvP is knowing how to load out your ship). I've only been in a handful of fights, but exactly 0 of those fights involved any degree of personal skill. We were always either outnumbered or outgunned by so much that anything we did really didn't matter, we just needed more people or bigger ships.
I think those are the reasons why EVE grows slowly rather than quickly.
It's a beautiful game, I personally love the "death penalty" and the guild vs guild warfare, but it's really inaccessible to newbies unless you commit to 6+ months of boring and highly restricted gameplay.

People play this game for different reasons. My idea of fun is definitly not fleet engagements. I am sure there are a few people who actually do enjoy running missions and collecting isk and seeing their wallet getting fatter and fatter. And there are others who just like blowing up NPCs.
If you haven't figured it out yet, not everyone likes the same things you do.

Eve grows because you can literally do anything in the game. There's a huge number of professions, and all of them are required to be filled. PvP (ship loss) without industry (ship creation)? Vice versa? 0.0 life without trading/hauling?
In other words, the various different roles were created by actually thinking about how they should interact, not just as an afterthought. @º¬íí-T«+ºH for all your political humor needs |

Edited by: Montague Zooma on 05/09/2007 21:31:19 I disagree with the contention that there is no "endgame" in Eve. Major alliance territorial warfare seems to qualify; it takes an enormous amount of skill and resources to successfully play that part of Eve. POS warfare isn't for casual players (but they can still assist the hardcore players that drive it).
And there can certainly be more than one endgame. Becoming a market tycoon seems like an endgame achievement. The same goes for conquering the most difficult npc missions.
People are free to play Eve however they wish; the "endgame" isn't mandatory. But there are definitely aspects of the game that are played best by the hardcore.

Im sorry, but your "Ready to quit" points are so wrong its not even funny. On my minmitar alt, ALL I FLY is rifter, I have no other ship skills yet I have a positive kill death ratio against targets cruiser / battlecruiser sized. This leads me into your other points.
You think a no skill newb, can sit in my rifter and take down a cruiser?
You think all you have to do to get a win is fit your ship right? What about cap cycling, transversal velocity, rocket velocity, range, electronic warfare, Using CORRECT methods to close on your target or to retreat? What about knowing when to use what skills?
"There is no off the beaten path PvP encounters? Have you ever opened the map? I would wager that MAYBE 20% of eve's total systems have one way in and one way out, EVERY piece of major space or alliance area has multiple ways in, and out, and also have multiple ways once in to get to different area's.
Sure there are major highways inbetween "zones" but what do you think happens in Dark Age of Camelot when I want to go from the entrance to Albion Labrynth to lets say the entrance to midguards? Well you have a couple choices, You can follow the main road and get ganked by 8man roaming gank groups, or you can follow the zone wall go around the long way, or just get on a horse and hope you can run through the enemy to get to your spot.. how is this ANY different then eve? Its not.
0.0 corps.. funny, I was in a 0.0 corp for a long time, I think I joined with less sp's then when you create a character these days
in closing, research.

EVE grows because most people ignore the forums, especially COAD.

Are you someone who is respected by other older players and known through the eve universe?
No?
Then I suggest you keep at it for your endgame.
I for one like the group fighting and making old guys like you s**t themselves when ten newbs smoke them in lo sec.
(Never really did that, but maybe others have!!)

my question would be will there be more new regions to inhabit. atm it seems that the population in 0.0 is growing steadily which kills the vastness factor of eve. once 0.0 is crowded eve shardless server ideal will backfire at the devs. i like the idea of a shardless universe...but if the universe is having too many inhabitants its not what i call outer space.

Actually if you looked at the drone regions when they were added they were mostly unpopulated. Now things are rather busy out there. More crowding in 0.0 creates more conflict and alliances prepared to fight for their space. That and you'll regularly find 0.0 space with no one in local.
As 0.0 gets more crowded then I'm sure a new region will be developed and opened. The real question should be how much server power will be devoted to 0.0 to improve everyday performance let alone fleet battles.
I agree I don't have the features to be a holoreel star. Most people have missed the point that this is Mobsters Online and that carebears are at the bottom of the foodchain. |

Edited by: Liam Fremen on 06/09/2007 00:50:12 There are many reasons...
1) Even if you are bored is very hard that you delete ur subscription, you know, skill keep rising... is hard to have skilled people leave the game, they take a break, they change skills sometime and come back after months :) (i made it myself in 2005)
2) In EvE mostly in 0.0 you REALY build something, you have to realy organize yourself, you must work hard or you don't find any result.
4) This game offer the most wide "enjoyable" way of playing then any other game.. you can do realy anything and is built for any kind of player, carebears, farmers, pvpers, casual players, hardcore one everything!
5) This game NEVER ENDS! there is no limit to reach, even patch and so on change the gameplay continuously, the pvp keep changing, everything change so people must adapt and it is fun :)
6) Eve is hardcore game, if you lose you REALY lose, so people have a way highter feel of what they possess, in other games you are sure about ur "equipment" you don't lose anything, here people MUST learn to play or they lose everything.
And the main reason is:
EvE is addicting.

Edited by: Altrisra on 06/09/2007 01:28:33 the new econ blog helps illustrate growth. and i really just agree that the lack of "grindable" endgame is wat makes it so fun. you have to spend time in your cruiser before your battleship. you have to mine in a frigate and a cruiser for a fair while b4 you can crawl into a barge. it's the time that it takes that allows you to seem "safe" while learning the game. the giant group dynamics of a fleet are not something a person can learn in the time it takes for an average WoW player to grind to 70. thats y the built in limitations are so nice.
plus im weird and i just like to mine to make money
