Edited by: Berendas on 07/09/2007 20:03:37 Edited by: Berendas on 07/09/2007 20:02:35 Hi all, I'm a big fan of military technology and I though I'd share some of the cooler and lesser known weapons of war. I'll focus primarily on American technology, but I'll bring in stuff from other countries as well.
I'm an extremely partiotic person (U.S. citizen) so that kinda increased my inclination to do something like this. Although I say God bless the troops, as per the forum rules please keep the political/religious aspects of miliraty life; this is strictly a tech discussion.
I'll periodically post a new vehcile, gun, plane, ect. so check back every once in a while
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f322hO2F-s
This plane is an AC-130 Spectre Gunship. Its a varient of the C-130 Hercules transport plane and its used for close air to ground support. Typical armaments are 20mm Vulcan cannons/ miniguns, 40mm L/60 Bofors cannon, and a 105mm M102 Howitzer.

I think you know what I meant despite the irony. :) Personally, I would love it if we all could throw patriotic out of the window. Whats the difference between being patriotic and being fanatic? I dont say that to anger somebody, they just seem so similar to me.

I'd like to see a poll on how many Iraqi's view the terrorists as patriotic and how they think the terrorists are fighting for their freedom and for the good of all the Iraqi people.

Yes we do. However, the soldier and the fanatic are people that generally believe they are saving you because they care and wouldnt think twice about cashing in their life to save yours. That isnt such a bad thing. Perhaps they will be the key types of people to save us from ourselves. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. Sad how quickly this decended into politics.
The XM8 Assault Rifle on Mail Call. The gun was based on the HK G36 and intended to replace the M16 and M4. Unfortunatly, last I heard the program was cancelled. Looks like the HK 416 is the top runner now. ------ wait...what? |

I read in a science and technology magazine years back on a hybrid they were designing based off the AC-130. Just to make it short, they wanted to stick the VTOL capabilities of our osprey on it. The vehicle could essentially come into the warzone and drop 2 tanks or 40 troops the take off and give air support with it's cannons.

Have you even heard about the study done by two professors and two PhD holders at the most prestigious medical school in the world, John's Hopkins? It's called Mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: a cross-sectional cluster sample survey. If you attend a university you may have access to the text as part of your tuition. Take advantage of it. Please.
I'm tired of ignorant people who like to open their mouths. I know I have no right to preach infront of a 20,000 member megachurch in the midwest USA. Unlikewise tons of people who obviously don't keep themselves informed very much like to tell us how to run the nation. Or who should be president. George Bush isn't Jesus on Earth, sorry, that's an millenia (4000+) old idea which goes by the name Heaven's Mandate. It's just a cute idea neocons have used to make money.
If you average it out, that's about 20 Virginia-Tech-sized body counts a day, every single day. Was I mad when a man ultimately responsible for these deaths came to grieve with us? Yes. Was I very very sad when I heard students at a Baghdad university sent their condolences? Yes.
This post is only political if there is a side that thinks the war needs to go on. And sadly, because there is, things like this will need to be said.

In keeping with the spirit of the topic, check out Future Weapons, a show on Discovery Channel. My fav weapon is the Excalibur, found under weapon zone 1 (season 1). But they're all interesting, especially the thermobaric charge. The episodes are on torrents. I think the OP will love it.

The terrorists are responsible for the majority of the deaths...
It's a fact people like you seem to continually ignore...
It's unfortunate for the innocent civilians that fall at the hands of the terrorists; this is why we are in this war. We are fighting the most intolerant group of Muslims on the planet; they are even intolerant of most of their own kind... They need to be eliminated, not left alone...

No political.
Yeah I saw the excalibur also. One of my favorites episodes was the one they did with robots in the battlefield. Like the medical apc that would roll up, pop a little human scooper out which would collect the wounded and bring them back to the apc where they would be set onto a rack. Once inside the apc could perform basic repairs but if the subject was in pretty bad shape a air transport would fly overhead and lift the soldier right out of the apc through a top hatch and bring him back. To me that's a totally awesome concept vehicle.
