This will affect everyone utilizing the internet by introducing draconian legal tools for interfering with DNS resolution.
If that wasn't worrying enough, try reading up on the international version called ACTA.
For more information check out the front page of reddit, or Google's website where the logo is currently blacked out in opposition to these two terrible pieces of legislation.
These two bills are just the opening shots in an all-out war of big content and existing rightsholders against the internet, and as such even if you aren't a US citizen you should be extremely frightened and pissed off.

Check your country legislative proposals. Almost all EU countries have similar initiatives. Also, CCP is a international company with servers in US also. (and if I`m not mistaking they have an Atlanta office)
And the final point, if US goes with SOPA and PIPA, the rest of the civilized world will implement this type of acts into their legislation. |

Yes it does. Many other countries are on the brink of introducing similarly ******** laws but so far their lobbies have not gained enough momentum to succeed at such plan.
With the influential USA setting up such a massive precedent, you may expect a chain effect in a sizable part of the western countries. Eastern countries tend to have censorship and "freedom management" already anyway. |

The internet should be the wild west forever I agree, I had a similar thought too that anyone could fake something and put blame on another. The bill is clearly set up to be a power abuse. I can see the Internet being mauled viciously, especially by companies like Sony.
Here is the full list of organizations that support SOPA.
It is a bit of a concern because this will affect other legislations on ridiculous freedom killing acts. If it is somehow approved, prepare for sacrifices. |

It doesn't make sense for a foreign company to complain or take a stance... what channels do they even have to influence USA domestic policy? Besides, I would think that the more foreign opposition they see to it, all the more strongly American legislators would support SOPA and PIPA just to spite them.
I think now that the word is out and the public is more aware of what's at stake, these particular bills will either fail or be much curtailed. In the long run though, we'll likely have this kind of legislative fight every few years until the big media companies inevitably win. They have vast financial resources and the benefit of immortality; most voters have only spurts of indignation and the ability to write misspelled letters to the wrong congressmen. |

Having not read the text of the proposals myself, I remain neutral on the subject due to my own ignorance. I refuse to be lead by the nose by bloggers, activists, and doomsayers into protesting something I don't fully understand. If the detractors are right, then I oppose the legislation. |

American congress is still stupid over this bill. What do they know in and out about the Internet? They're all old people with old fart minds.
There is no way to stop Internet piracy as this is fact. No internet nuke can totally kill off sharing, P2P networks. In line with such, is notorious corporations that would ravage the internet over any 'misplaced' content. Copyright has no legit place on the Internet, if you want something so sacred keep it none digital, or especially keep it off this world wide web, Internet. It's neutral and ours, let no one take this away from us.
Seriously, are all these people this stupid? It's a subject nobody but the Internet that understands. There is no "wider-agreement", there is absolutely NO agreement. Screw this bullshit.

Flawed statement, IMO.
They are winning because we won't draw lines and just call everything 'piracy'. You need to make the line very clear about what is LEGAL and what is ILLEGAL.Regular people won't admit anything they do could possibly be illegal (or should be), even as they pay nothing for tons of copyrighted works while advertisers profit, and no one in the entertainment industry will admit that any of it is legal.
Unfortunately, since our side is the one pirating things and we refuse to acknowledge that they're doing something wrong... we lose... The only way to succeed is to let the pirates hang and only fight for our own rights.
Good video I was linked on another site. <3 TED.

Also flawed.
The internet is not some naturally occurring phenomenon. It's a series of cables and lines, satellites and undersea connections. It's maintained by people and costs money. It is not neutral in any way. It is OWNED and you pay for the SERVICE of using. The company who owns it is subject to the laws of the country the lines move across just like anything else, and in the U.S. copyrights are protected by law. |

That's already covered with 'public domain'. It's why you hear old movie quotes on the radio and in techno songs. After something is X years old you don't get copyrights anymore except under special circumstances.
Even if it wasn't, you're basing a broad statement on a small issue that's not connected. Even if you feel copyrights should die with the author, plenty of piracy happens with the author still being alive. |

NOTHING is stored on 'the internet' it's all hosted on a computer (servers being a type of computer). The ISP's provide the service of transferring data from one computer to another. The internet is not owned by any single entity, it is thousands of seperate ones, maybe hundreds of thousands, so many that effectively no one owns it.
And even without the internet digital piracy is going to happen, be it through a privately owned server, or by transferring it directly through a seperate and secure channel (like a LAN cable) |
