Eve "online" has what 15-30k people online at any given time. World of warcraft has hundreds of thousands of people online, hundreds of servers and half the down-time.
Obviously this single game server cannot cope with the amount of players as you can notice with the 5000m/s ping time you get when you enter a crowded zone.
Why not give us another server that we can play on.

Edit: I didnt see your oh-so-sarcastic inverted commas around "online". How very droll.

*cough* Well. WoW has less server traffic 'cause of those servers being individuals(i think).
WoW has one weekly DT, that is equal to EVEs cumulative DT.
WoW does crash too, and in a similar fashion, when it does, it's safe to expect it'll crash twi, or three times.
It's just been a rough two days, don't let it cloud your judgies.

EvE will never be sharded, just like you will never gain EXP for skills. CCP just won't do it ever. ------------

yep shard eve and ill deff. be quitting as will a huge chunk of the community.
one of the most attractive things about this game is that everyone that plays it is in space somewhere at the same time. it makes pvp allience wars etc possable.
but still sucks the lag that we get. it does seem to be worse than b4. a year ago a fight in 0.0 could have 300ppl in a system, now it lgs to hell with 1/2 that amount, whats the deal with that?

The lag in high traffic systems really needs to be looked at either way its poor at best it will only get worse if nothing is done.
If it isnt already hosted across a few servers they need to look at that as an option.

Avoid high traffic systems perhaps? You don't have to go to Jita you know.

Thank you so much for your valuable input, CCP probably has no clue there is lag in places like Jita. And the idea of using more resources for a more populated system is groundbreaking, you should work at CCP as I'm sure this obvious solution never crossed their minds!

Can't really have played wow much, if say that.
Most people i know that have played wow a lot, have learned to stay far from the game least a day or two after a patch, the emergency patch 1,2 and 3 and regarding their forums they lose about 90% of their posters each single patch to.
Last big eve patch was an upgrade, something you normally would have to pay hard earned money for to get for wow, that is you had to pay money for a DVD or cd that is totally useless when you get it home and have to download and patch the entirely new file from internet.
The eve team are doing great, lucky for them they dont sell car-tires, if they did every customer would demand they buy them a new car every time they got a flat tire.

How about a mirrored server where when there are issues with this one it can be taken down and everyone plays on the other one?

They are bringing us a new server. It's where the ambulation will happen.
As for the rest sharding eve would be silly. The whole point is if you see someone on the forums you can go online and find them there too.

WOW doesn't have 35k players on one server. Their servers are limited to 5k each, which is why they don't need as much downtime.
Not only that, but Tranquillity is actually ranked in the top 200 supercomputer clusters in the world. TQ is by no means, underpowered. It's quite a beast of a cluster.
And I have no idea where you're getting this 5km/s bull**** from. ---

Classic!
And yeah, I galdly pay 11 Euro's/month to endure lag i can avoid instead of having lag i cannot avoind in WoW.
NEWFLASH! Wow does lag and crash at times!

They're the only gaming company in the world to have a server in the top 500 super clusters in the world. They're thinking of upgrading soon I think (I can't remember where I saw Oveur saying it, but he said they were looking into things).
They have roughly 290 blades I think.
Each blade houses two processors, and a few gig of memory.
A minimum of one sol system can run on one processor (Jita for example, is run on one processor).
Some processors handle multiple low-load systems. Because of the random nature of EVE, sometimes guessing where a large battle is hard, and so on occasions, multiple large battles can break out on the same processor, causing problems.
On-top of this, the server then needs to collaborate with the several RAMSAN's (think a gigantic harddrive, but it's all RAM), that can find and deliver any data they need within milliseconds.
That help you understand? ---

They have added new blade servers, solid state disks and other extremely expensive widgetry. The trouble is, every time they do this. more people join, so we end up back at the same point.
EVE is pretty much a victim of it's own success. Now, if all the whiners left, it'd be a far better place for the rest of us

They did.. Several times so far.. The problem is that the proxy servers didn't get the same love and have gotten all jealous and refuse to talk to the game servers in a civilized way anymore..

How do you conclude this from 24 hours of intermittent server problems that aren't even related to the number of players on the server?
