I had a very interesting discussion with an anonymous source from the UK Inland Revenue and they have made a serious investment into investigating their ability to tax income from virtual worlds.
This project is well advanced and will affect EVE (the EULA is meaningless against UK budgetry law) - you heard it here first !!

There is no way they can tax something that don't exist. ISK is a virtual currency. If they tax something that dont exsist, I will simply pay them the same way: with something that does not exsist.

They can't tax virtual money you aren't allowed to sell.
Next you'll tell me they will try and tax bank robbers >.<

hi, LC hows it going? you say tax income? OK good news for the UK isk resellers as most players dont make isk playing the game so there is nothing to tax.
Unlike other online games that do

If i believe, CCP still owns everything in the EVE universe, so they can't really tax any of it because none of the users own it.

Unfortunately the qualification is that you are expending labour to earn virtual money - therefore you are liable to tax.
I'm not making this up - I was talking to somebody who....

I think you might be confused, Their certainly is a study investigating peoples cash income from MMOs via E-bay and so on not the actual virtual money, wtf are the Inland revenue going to do with ISK or gold?
These measures if ever implemented are aimed at individuals who earn a substantial side (or even primary) income with virtual currency, item or character sales that isn't taxed and is basically tax evasion.

How can it affect eve? Everyone pays their $15 a month to play a game. If you could buy isk directly from CCP and exchange ingame isk for real life money i could see something like that happening. (doesn't second life operate something like this?)
Apart from people selling isk for real money on illegal sites, all money in game stays in the game.

Same thing - UK Treasury spends the money, the 'Inland Revenue' collects it. We could get pedantic and break down the latter.

Start up the richest alliance in eve and tax the hell out of everything. People are gonna need to quit their jobs just so they can work 9-10 hours a day mining for the Inland revenue

Nope, my source works in Whitehall and likes a beer. You can waste your time with uneducated and ill-informed responses, but my OP stands and is 100% accurate.

UK doesn't have a treasury, the Queen does though, it's called HM Treasury and can be found here.
By Inland Revenue you probably mean HM Revenue and Customs, they are here
Different ministers in charge of each. Not the same thing at all.

all this really means is the end of ISK buying/selling in the UK... but then again, CCP has a hard enough time tracking down those who do it, I'm sure a government agency will be even less sucessful.
