Is it just me, or does the nerfbat whistle across the back of my knees every time I think I've got my training properly organized.
I appreciate that many of the older players have there skills so broadly spread that it is only a minor inconvenience to them, but many younger players like me spend months specializing to try and level the playing field a bit.

its a good example to train for at least 2 races, so when one is inevitably nerfed, the other is probably ok still.

This.
Of course, people want to train for the I-Win buttons. You know, did you ever stop to consider *why* you're training for it? ;)
Yeees, that's why they're nerfing it.

This. Training for the FOTM (flavour of the month) will result in nerfs after a few month. Has been like this since first year of EVE. You'd be better off trying to predict the next FOTM.

My advice is to stick to yours guns, I started training Minmatar about 2 years ago and despite them being good at pvp now through game tweaking, they werent back when I decided to train them, they were the underdogs along with Amarr, which still happens to be on the poor side.
Your best bet is to specialize in a single race, pick one you like and you'll stick too. Then train that race up so you can use the t2 weaponary, have all/most of thier t2 ships and have them trained to an above par level. You'll find this opens the doors to other races anyway in the long run, I only need to train a cruiser to level 5 and I can use that race's HACs, Recons, Logistics, Command Ships and whatever else uses that level 5.
I still would prefer my specialized skilling though. I'd prefer training Command ships level 5 over another cruiser 5 and its racial weaponary for instance.
And nothing has ever been hit with the 'nerfbat' that it made it completely useless to train imo, so if you like what your using atm stick to it. Your going to be a very diluted player in the long run, that isnt necessary better than most people at a certain thing.
Like me, I plan to get excellent leadership skills, and thats what my character, at the end of the day, will be better at most the people in EvE at. Not many people can say they have a maxed out Skirmish gang bonus. Just like there wont be many pilots with Recon 5 and maxed out ECM skills, and of course the point of all this is, these pilots will still be extremely effective at what they specialised to do even if it does get nerfed.

i am unsure how yo managed to missread "spend months specializing to try and level the playing field a bit" into "continually switching training".
I know why I went for the curse, 7 months ago. it seemed like a damn cool ship to fly. it looks good and was specialized for nos and drones. something I've been using since day one.
sad to say that I have joined the big crowd and now go for a huge tank and passive weapons. __________________________________ Gallente by birth. Amarr by choice. iDrone |

Stop worrying about where the nerfbat's swingin' and just train up what you like. When you get clipped by it, power through. Constantly training for whatever the latest craze is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
I'm an Amarr laser specialist, at this point capable of flying most of the ships, and I have no intention of changing my skill training path despite the fact that CCP secretly hates the Amarr. I fly 'em because they're shiny...
And for off the wall "You think your race has it bad? Well, let me tell you a little something about EM damage..." counter-whines.

I branched out at first for the fun of it... Trained all non-amarr (a note here: when I first started cross training, Amarr didn't suck. I didn't decide not to train them due to all the Amarr whines, I chose not to train them because I don't like their combat style) up to battleship and played around with them all a bit. Trained all three races t2 frigs up, played with those for a while... Then I decided that (for the most part) caldari arn't my style. So I flew Gal and Min for a while...
I finally decided that minmatar were my thing, so I trained up for the Sleipnir. Currently finishing off t2 large ACs/Arty for my other love, the Maelstrom. My spread out skills have benefited all 3 races, but specialization has now made my minmatar ships especially uber.
Play around with different ships and races, then find one you like and specialize. FOTM ships are far overated. ---- Bloodmoney is recruiting

What other people said. Speccing really is not all that people make it out to be. I have been spreading my skills wildly over all four races pretty much from day one, and never regretted it. T2 large weapons are really only needed for fleet battles and solo PvP, both things that I have no interest in. I can fly all BS at lvl4+ in every relevant skill and I would say I am doing great. Imho being able to fly pretty much every T1 ship there is, always using the one most suitable for the job at hand, beats being able to fly only a very limited selection of ships 15% better than nonspecced chars. And saves you a lot of whining when the nerfbat comes your way. As for T2 ships, I got an alt for those
There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Scorpion There is no 'e' in Caldari There is no makeup in rogue drones |

I trained for gallante when the amarr and minmatar had their lows full of unstacked dmg mods. I trained for gallante when the caldari had their "hit everything with full dmg" missiles. Ive been through it all so bahahahah on you who whine about gallante.

Eh, that's because we've had to deal with drone idiocy on a much wider scale then anyone else. I still have drones that get stuck on objects, or decide that it doesn't want to return to my drone bay. Just sits outside your ship saying "But I don't wanna!"

If you don't over specialise you shuld be fine. I decided early on to leave my options open as much as possible and every nerf proves the wisdom of the decision.
I got Amarr cruiser 5 and could fly a curse just as the nos nerf hit. Pity. However it also meant I could fly a sacrilege just as it got boosted. Nice.
A little flexibility beats absolute specialisation 9 times out of 10.

i was planning on skilling up my gunnery a lot (aka sharpshooter, traject analysis, motion predict, surgical strike, and a tech 2 tree) and then do the 30ish days to get t2 guns of another race and the 20ish days for another cruiser 5. and get myself a new hac, recon, logistic, and command ship :D and get all the specs to 4.
most things are more equal then you may think. although yes a few ships are quite awesome in comparison. but everything can be countered in someway. just bring a bigger blob (just kidding everyone)

Do what I'm doing and train for both Caldari and Amarr, two of the most gimped racial ship families (T1-only ship basis) in the game.
Sooner or later one or the other will get a boost, and the other two races will get the nerfbat.
Either way, FOTM-based ships/setups will almost always get the nerfbat. Just look at ECM, unstacked nano/inertia stabs, upcoming changes to damps, etc. -

sad but true. How many Gallente pilots do you know who trained Amarr solely for the Curse/Pilgrim? (and NO laser skills) I've lost count
Same with everyone who trained Minmatar to fly a Nanophoon with no projectile skills, or the people who are, right now, diving into Vagabond training when they're only a month old and will probably moan if/when the Mass-increaser modules ever get implemented :P

Fly what you want to fly, damn the nerfbat. A good, high-SP, experienced pilot can make even the sucky ships do a good job. And the Curse, for instance, despite being nerfed with NOS, can still energy neut down most carriers' cap recharge if you have a ship cap Xfering you. It's still highly viable, just requires different tactics (Curse + Auguror/Guardian = your foes are out of cap).
Personally, I'm training a lot of the background skills which apply to many ships before I start branching out from my current Gallente frigates to battlecruisers. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |
