Originally by: "Times Online" THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.
Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

This makes me feel really bad.
The crash was only a few miles from my house. I Hope his family and friends are ok.
One of my friends in school were actually a relative, hope she is ok aswell.
RIP Colin, you made all of scotland and the rest of world proud. A true great in rallying.

First Richard Burns and now Colin McRae. Our two most well known and best rally drivers gone (both had a decent series of computer games named after them).
Very sad indeed that this should happen

Hmmm....
Does this mean we can expect a Colin McRae's Helicopter Challenge air-crash sim now?
And if so, will it suck as badly as some of the rally games?

Thats sad.
Kind of ironic though, that a man who spent his whole life driving around slippery muddy corners at break-neck speed would die in an aircrash. Almost as bad as Steve Irwin, a man who spent his whole life wrestling massive man-eating lizards getting killed by a little fish.
Fate has a cruel sense of humour. ------

Steve hislop (a scot motorcycle racer) also died in a helecopter crash a few year's ago, imho it's about time these aircraft were banned from public use, they are proveing to be far more dangerous and life threatening that just about any other type of aviation

Sorry; that's just a knee-jerk reaction that any Tory MP would be proud of. Perhaps it would be an idea to wait and see what the cause of the crash was before belting copters with the banz0r stick?
Shall we ban cars then because they are proving to be far more dangerous and life threatening than any other form of getting to work on time?
Shall we ban alcohol because it kills people? (Far more people than air-crashes)
Shall we ban voting because it leads to a succession of rubbish governments interested only in feathering their own nests at our expense? (Not nation specific that one; applies pretty much everywhere )
McCrae had a choice, and he exercised it. Unfortunately, he was unlucky; this happens sometimes. Unlike Mike Smith (who got not-quite-as-unlucky) he died, and even more unfortunately, he took some of his family with him.
It is often said that air travel is the safest form of transport, but does anyone know where to get statistics specifically for helicopers?
I'd be interested to see how dangerous flying a copter is compared to say... walking around Birkenhead at 2am or running the risk of dying from food poisoning eating at McDonalds.

When I engage these coils normally I do about 2x10^6 dps. But I try to avoid that because people, entire populations, like die. So I try to keep it to about 4x10^3 dps. |

Flying in a plane is less dangerous than driving a car if you measure the distance, but if you compare the amount of trips then it's actually slightly more dangerous to fly.
