Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

Thats sad.
Kind of ironic though, that a man who spent his whole life driving around slippery muddy corners at break-neck speed would die in an aircrash. Almost as bad as Steve Irwin, a man who spent his whole life wrestling massive man-eating lizards getting killed by a little fish.

Sorry; that's just a knee-jerk reaction that any Tory MP would be proud of. Perhaps it would be an idea to wait and see what the cause of the crash was before belting copters with the banz0r stick?
Shall we ban cars then because they are proving to be far more dangerous and life threatening than any other form of getting to work on time?
Shall we ban alcohol because it kills people? (Far more people than air-crashes)
Shall we ban voting because it leads to a succession of rubbish governments interested only in feathering their own nests at our expense? (Not nation specific that one; applies pretty much everywhere )
McCrae had a choice, and he exercised it. Unfortunately, he was unlucky; this happens sometimes. Unlike Mike Smith (who got not-quite-as-unlucky) he died, and even more unfortunately, he took some of his family with him.
It is often said that air travel is the safest form of transport, but does anyone know where to get statistics specifically for helicopers?
I'd be interested to see how dangerous flying a copter is compared to say... walking around Birkenhead at 2am or running the risk of dying from food poisoning eating at McDonalds.

Flying in a plane is less dangerous than driving a car if you measure the distance, but if you compare the amount of trips then it's actually slightly more dangerous to fly.

I did play the games, briefly, and I do consider it appropriate to comment. The Colin McCrae games were over-hyped, badly designed and executed pieces of not-nice.
The only reason so many copies sold was the dubious link to a Scottish sportsman who actually managed to win events; something of a novelty.
Why do you think we've never seen EA Sports Scottish Premier League Football 200*? Because no-one would buy it given Scotland's dismal record as regards the beautiful game.
It'd be a bit like a George Bush edition of the famous boardgame, Diplomacy... (afterthought: although possibly that could be marketed as Gunboat Diplomacy and might sell after all).
As for death; folk die all the time.
My respect for Mr McCrae's accomplishments as a rally driver is undiminished by the fact that he is no longer with us.
My contempt for the games sold by his name is similarily undiminished.
As for what is a suitable subject for humour, that's a very personal thing and I refuse to be bound by other peoples' idea of what constitutes respect.

I would say it's a little harsh to make light of an accident which killed two small children as well as some guy who did a fine job at rallying but had games that sucked linked to him. Ah! Reasoned debate at last. Your opinion is noted.
However, I disagree with it; a subject is either fit for humour, or it is not, timing is irrelevant.
How many times have famous/infamous people died and the first you know about it is a mate sending you a text joke about it?
Is it not said, "If I didn't laugh, I'd cry"? Well, I for one refuse to cry.

I agree with your argument, however was it not said that the secret of comedy was timing? Joking about the loss of four human beings two of which were children with a whole life ahead of them, should be left for some time at least, and perhaps not used in a thread of condolence? Start your own jokes about Colin McRae thread, at least we can choose not to read it. ------------------------------ Benilopax touched by an Avon!

You are missing the point.
I have the utmost respect for Colin McCrae as a rally driver; he's just not that good a pilot it would seem.
The "target" in my original comment was intended to be the gaming industry, who will use whatever they can to sell substandard wares to impressionable fan-bois who wouldn't know a decent game if they fell over it.
I fully expect whoever has the rights to rush out another three poorly put together games as quickly as they can before the public at large forgets who Colin McCrae is/was.
As for me being a chav... oh dear... more verbal abuse masqeurading as an argument.
Define chav anyway; it seems to me to be this years default insult when those of limited intellect and vocabulary can think of nothing better to say.

Hmmm... let's see...
France; former world champions. True, but if Scotland are ahead of them in a group, they are obviously not up to par this year.
Ukraine; Quarter-finalists... so, the Tim Henman of international football then.
BTW, you forgot to mention the Faroe Islands giant killing performance in the world cup a while back... possibly you realised that mentioning a one-off, fluke performance by a minor footballing nation might weaken your attack on my argument?
Slice it whichever way you will, Scotland are not good at football. Their appearance at the top of that table is the far end of a probability curve and nothing more.
I stand by my original opinion and see nothing here to refute it.

He died in a Helicopter accident and a few other people as well, so please show your respect. If you wish to talk about other matters, start your own thread. Thank you.
Anyone who has never told, or laughed at, a joke about someone who has died is welcome to be upset by my (possibly) poor attempt at gallows humour (does anybody remember laughter?).
The rest of you are hypocrites who can blow it out of your afterburner as far as I'm concerned.

you're a right bastard, and I salute you, good posting form Jago!
I think the point is that you are hurting other peoples feelings, not showing disrespect for McCrae: in that light a fellow human being might say to the next: what ho, how unsensitive.
I fully endorse your right to **** off everyone though.

First off, fixed that for you. (Sorry, I'm a closet English language facist )
I am reliably informed that my parents were actually married 6 months before I arrived, so technically, I'm not a bastard.
My intention is never directly to hurt peoples' feelings. However, I am aware that some folk are unusually sensitive to freedom of expression... that's just too bad.
As I have stated before, I have a great deal of respect for Mr McCrae, but not for the gaming industry which is, I reiterate, the target of my original post.
However, even I have limits. Witness my complete lack of a presence in the many "EVE player has died" threads. As I know very little about the people involved, I found myself with nothing relevant to say on their untimely demise.
A lot of the folk who did post in these threads knew the people in question, as I did not, and for me to show up in these threads, shooting my mouth off, would have been insensitive.
Colin McCrae was a celebrity and, as such, his life and the tragic shortening of it is of interest to many folk, myself included. If it wasn't, then it wouldn't be news now, would it?
Just because I don't immmediately pile in with the "what a sad loss, we shall never see his like again" plaudits, doesn't mean I'm a bad man; it just means that I have something different to say.
Opinions are like members of goonswarm; everybody has one.
Just because mine differs from some others on what is acceptable in a forum thread doesn't make me wrong, or right. It just makes me, me.
The next revolution won't be televised; it'll be pod-cast. |

Try reading the thread again, this time with your eyes actually open... go on, do it now; we can wait ten minutes for you to work out all the big words.
No-one has said "yay he's dead", and I doubt very much that Dirt will be the last Colin McCrae game.
As for myself, I merely cast aspersions on the gaming industry's modus operandi and dared to suggest that some of their product is rubbish which only sells vecause it is linked to celeb names.
I'd say that was fair comment.
