All this hype about Halo3. I seriously dont get it. I thought the IP was a mediocre FPS to begin with, with rubbish graphics and it has been superseeded by lots of other FPS since.
What is the big deal?

On PC, Halo 1 was a good but fairly bogstandard FPS - Halo 2 was delayed so long that PC users gave up on it, and most of them (us) can't be arsed with it anymore.
On Console, Halo 1 was the first FPS since Goldeneye on the N64 to actually be *any* good. Reason behind that (in my honest opinion) is that it was actually playable on a control pad, while still being fun. Because the console-fanboys loved it so much, hadn't seen anything like it before, it got hyped up ridiculous amounts and its just kinda gone downhill from there.
Halo 2 was much of the same, and thats what they wanted, but they cut it short and left it on a cliffhangar - which I imagine most of Halo 3's hype is due to people wanting to know wtf happens.
At least thats my take on the topic.

I agree. Halo is being hyped because it's one of the only good FPS games available on consoles. To those of us used to PC's, Halo is just another game, and we can't really see the reason behind it.
I admit that I found Halo fun to play though, at least on the first run through. But it's not that great.

list of best selling games. check the FPS genre
Apart from that its graphix are fairly standard, agreed. What makes it excellent is its AI, Story, Art direction, gameplay and general setting. Halo 1 was the first shooter to combine an engrossing singleplayer experience with killer AI, vehicles and new gameplay mechanics + grenades and melee, all mapped to different buttons. This gave you excellent control over the avatar. Halo was one of the first games where you had a dynamic combat feel. you against a squad of bad guys and the pew pew flowed dynamically to and fro. also the pew pew was a way of telling the story, not the other way around.
Also it is fast becoming one of the only game franchises next to Mario to supercede itself. Halo food, Halo drink, Halo this, Halo that.
If you look at the Halo 3 prelaunch commercials this is most evident in that Bungie and MS are hitting for a true heroic epic on par with beowulf, oddyseus and band of brothers. It supercedes the pew pew it came from (which is generally better in things like UT and CS) and provides an emotional bond in the game itself. The masterchief is something that people root for intrinsically. It also has a theme song that could be likened to the recognizability and emotion you get from the indy tune, or the starwars theme.
In essence its a combination of a great game coupled with some AAA quality marketing and brand awareness. Also, bungie have Hype generation down to a T.
oh, and yes, I am TEH FANBOYEE!!
edit: also, halo 3 promises what others have BOTCHED to no end. You get to FINISH the fight. Most games always leave openings, and the Matrix failed epically because there was no true end. You wanted neo to wtfbbqpwn everything which was remotely mechanical. it didnt happen. For 2 games the chief has been a kind of semi-believable superman, fighting the odds. in this game you get to take him to the end of it all, in an epic story.
I think I might have lost some fluids during the typing of this post. I really are shameless fanboy. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

When Halo launched (xbox) it reached legendary status. Not just in terms of AI but also intensity. when Halo was new it ****ed a giant nigera falls beam of **** all over every other FPS.
Halo 2 was rubbish as it was forced to relase earlier than planned.
Halo 3? Dunno, wont buy the limited edition this time. But I got my hopes up.

Must disagree with you there, Red Faction 1 on PlayStation 2 was leaps and bounds ahead of Halo in both single player and multiplayer modes. Control system was excellent and hassle free as well
Halo was simply an OKish FPS, with excellent marketing. A big help to that was that it was made by Bungie, who made the immensely awesome Marathon games.

ahh i see now, thanks lads. Tbh i think the generous branding and marketing is going to make ppl want to buy it even out of cuiousity, Im sure theres plenty like me whove never played it cos we have PCs.
But you just cant seem to stop the MS hype machine on Halo3. Theyre making sure everyone knows about it and I wonder what will happen if it bombs out.
The graphics havent moved on much tho have they, taking into consideration how many years have passed since 1,2, and compare them to the likes of Killzone2 on the ps3.

But, it's not halo that makes it more fun, it's the game. The fact that it's halo is irrelevant, it may as well be Hello Kitty Island Adventure (or burnout).

Halo 2 is a brilliant multiplayer game! although i cant speak for hello kitty island adventure, brunout is brilliant too, but i have all the burnouts and the halo games, and when my mates come over, guess which they would rather play? (its halo)
Im not saying its better than PC FPS becuase its not half life cs tf tf2 etc for one are much better in my opinion, but they cant be just picked up and played co op or mutliplayer by four people in the same room with four beers just for fun, you need to set up four computers find a good server explain to your parents why there are piles of electronic equipment covering their expensive table.
Halo 1 multi was fantastic, Halo 2 is fun, its most certainly good compared to a lot of console shooters (PDZ for one was an appauling game).
I think my point is, no im not going to explain it to you as if you were 5, becuase well... it cant be done. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! IM WARNING YOU!!

You can blow scenary, walls, and any sort of rock away with explosive weapons, and attach remote bombs on people. That alone should make it like, 150.

I would like to get into a FPS again since my last time was truly Quake Fortress so maybe I'll give Halo 3 a shot.

yeah, i explained that in the first part of that post
did you miss that?
barring ringworld, which is a book, not a game, which FPS has a cooler storyline creating an epic, well designed tapestry?
Halflife is rly cool, and certainly in the same league as halo. and thats about it. gears of war story was totally non existent. there are no other FPSes with even a remotely intriguing story, and FPSes sell in the west like ham to a fat kid.
these days you have Bioshock: system shock and others were really cool, but didnt sell nearly as well as UT and doom and stuff, ecuase people back then werent ready for a storydriven FPS. Halo was the first to capitalize on a trend of story within an FPS, and its mulitplayers was unheard of in consoles: i honestly also find that matchmaking is better than browsing endless server and looking at their settings. all you do is push the play button, and you and your team are IN ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

call of duty's game mechanics are bullcrap: you cant win a firefight, because all the enemies endlessly respawn. If you play it on the hardest setting, all you do to win is run to the next wall, and wait till your squd comes to activate the next 'set'. CoD is built out of a broken mechanic because you cant win by strategy and skill, just by running forward and not getting hit.
It defeats any sense of accomplishment, whereas in halo on legendary you could duke it out with a group of enemies for 15 minutes and finally win, and you felt like you had just actually achieved something. The only place where Halo used CoD tactics was in the library, which was meant to push you along. in CoD thats the entire game. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."
