Halo 1 score on metacritic: 97
we're done here.
Halo got a 10/10 in Edge magazine. (only game that has gotten a 10/10)
Zelda : Orcina of time got 10/10 too.
Now we are done.
Zelda is also an awesome achievement (my fave was link to the past) but an entirely different ballpark from halo :-) ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

Smooth gameplay and campaign does it for me with Halo. The weapons upgrades made tons of sense in halo 2, but the campaign was pretty poor.

barring ringworld, which is a book, not a game, which FPS has a cooler storyline creating an epic, well designed tapestry?
Halflife is rly cool, and certainly in the same league as halo. and thats about it. gears of war story was totally non existent. there are no other FPSes with even a remotely intriguing story, and FPSes sell in the west like ham to a fat kid.
these days you have Bioshock: system shock and others were really cool, but didnt sell nearly as well as UT and doom and stuff, ecuase people back then werent ready for a storydriven FPS. Halo was the first to capitalize on a trend of story within an FPS, and its mulitplayers was unheard of in consoles: i honestly also find that matchmaking is better than browsing endless server and looking at their settings. all you do is push the play button, and you and your team are IN
The way you said it made it seem like you were just talking about sales.
Personally, I think the Half-Life story was much more engaging. I even remember trying in vain to save the scientist at the beginning of Power Up. I don't even think there would be a Halo without Half-Life. And I think Halo's story isn't very notable as far as SciFi stories go.
Frankly, I think the first epoch of FPS games was set by Doom (you can argue Wolfentstein 3D, but the advancements in Doom were Herculean), and then the second Epoch has begun with Half-Life, which we are currently in.
Even comparing it to other computer games, Halo AI was no better than Half-Life. Vehicles and the way they could be used, well that was hardly new.
Just because the game did it all on a console doesn't mean that it was miraculous. It just means a lot more people play console games.

Im not saying halo AI was better than HL, but it was structured in a way that made the fights more rewarding. Also the two weapon mechanic and grenades and melee added a new dimension to the gameplay, which wasnt seen in HL.
I actually do prefer HL story to Halo, but saying that halo didnt do anything for the FPS genre is kind of stupid. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

I have no idea what you're talking about because the selling point of cod4 is the multiplayer, and endlessly respawning enemies? 90% of games rely on that "bullcrap" mechanic, that's why we call them games--as for not winning a fire fight? just lol
the only revolutionary thing halo did was limiting you on less than 3 weapons in a few classes, a feature thats now a staple of almost every modern fps
Quote: If you play it on the hardest setting, all you do to win is run to the next wall, and wait till your squd comes to activate the next 'set'. CoD is built out of a broken mechanic because you cant win by strategy and skill, just by running forward and not getting hit.
Again I doubt you've played the beta but given that the majority of guns are full auto and there is bullet penetration through cover, on top the tight maps, other players can easily kill you--you'd be hard pressed to show me any game that either ignores skill or lets you take dozens of hits
Quote: It defeats any sense of accomplishment, whereas in halo on legendary you could duke it out with a group of enemies for 15 minutes and finally win, and you felt like you had just actually achieved something. The only place where Halo used CoD tactics was in the library, which was meant to push you along. in CoD thats the entire game.
like I said, if you had bothered to even do a cursory look at cod4 you'd know the name of the game is the multiplayer--although I'd argue the CoD franchise has had the most intense and cinematic scripted scenes in the FPS genre. now, 15 minutes for a single group of enemies is the very definition of pointless grinding, from my experience it wasn't difficult to annihilate scores of enemies with just a warthog or banshee.
if I want accomplishment I dont waste my time gunning down brainded npcs but take it to deathmatch.

I played CoD 1 2 and 3, albeit the latter 2 for the achievement points. CoD 2 on the hardest setting was the single most boring grind I ever played in my life.
a warthog and banshee make killing easier, but you dont have em all the time, do you? In CoD you dont even have to kill the enemies, since they respawn endlessly anyhow: all you do is run to the next marker, and youre set. The combat in SP halo didnt feel like a grind because with some tactics you could beat the enemy, which is impossible in CoD, since they endlessly respawn. the point is to run to the next marker, not kill germans. Halo combat had a natural ebb and flow which was an adrenaline rush. Also, when you were done with a covenant squad there would be bullet holes, gore, blast craters EVERYWHERE, so it looked like you actually had a real battle.
The MP in CoD4 might be kind of cool, agreed: especially the part where you lie around in jour death throes with a pistol. shooting through cover has been in since TF1 for petes sake... ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

I liked Halo One because it was an alright FPS, and it had a back story that I found had great depth, and Bungie hinted at the details, leaving you wondering what else was going on in the background. It was subtle and it was interesting.
Halo 2's story has been driven home with a sledgehammer with no actual subtle hinting at the lore behind the game. The only thing good about it really is the multiplayer.
I doubt Halo 3 is going to have anything like the background lore of the original. _________________________________________________________

Edited by: Cpt Placeholder on 19/09/2007 23:15:43 No idea, never liked it. Played part 1 a bit, but it was too boring to be honest. It was okay on multiplayer mode but nothing great. I think the hype is generated mainly by console players and I do find that a bit justified because I don't know any better console multiplayer game of its kind.
/e: Hmm well it was kind of stupid to say that I have no idea and then explain that I have one.

Was never a fan of halo, played it to a point, then it just seemed: the same the same the same (loop infinitely) Looking back on it and its various new iterations, it just seems so lacklustre compared to some of the good pc shooters out there. Im glad that most decent PC magazines could see through the hype and awarded halo 2 a fair score:

You are a n00b if you compare Halo with a crap port. Halo was made for xbox and it plays much better there. Dont blame the game just because you are too cheap to buy a console.
