Current implementation of radar in game is a little inpractical, mainly because of two reasons:
- radar changes its orientation, what is confusing - radar is filled sphere. as I said - pretty, but makes important things harder to be seen
IMO, what would be awesome, is to implement radar in similar way it was implemented in good old Elite - static ellipse, without too many graphical stuff, especially - don't make it filled elipse, because it will be more difficult to see objects, especially below ellipse's plane.
Eventually, with additional (turnable off) features:
1) static range - radar never shows anything besides such range (as now, a must) 2) show outside range on/off - stuff that is outside is still shown on radar, eventually with range info 3) dynamic range on/off - radar range is scaled automatically to range of farthest targeted objects, if no object targeted, switch to static range 4) dynamic margin (DM) - dynamic range is extended to 100% (farthest targeted object) + DM

I played a game once... called XWing / Tie Fighter. It has a really nice radar. That would be great in eve. _______________________________________________

Nice idea. Let me add a little something that could be implemented without actually changing the radar at all. It would be very nice if the things on your radar would have a brighter color. right now the color of untargeted stuff is pretty much the same as the radar background, making them hard to see at all. They should be white or something so you can see them better.

I like it fine the way it is, but the radar objects do need to be brighter at least, like white would be good.

I totaly agree with the topic creater, the current map is very limited and its sometimes very hard to see anything when there is a bright background behind it, there is also no way to see whats on the map, all items in space have the same color and shape, how about some diferent colors for earch diferent object in space?

A snap to point for objects in the radar would help a LOT. Add in a auto contrasting color for objects and the radar will be useful.

Add my vote for a radar modelled on classic Elite, naturally updated with the elegant EVE style we so know and love. I'm still baffled by the way the radar changes as a I change camera view or orientation - probably because responding to the Elite radar was burned into my wetware so many years ago.

After using the radar for about a month now, I am getting use to the format. I am very familiar with the x-wing/tie fighter sim (great game), it could work in Eve (might have some copywright problems). Nonetheless, the Eve radar does have advantages over the x-wing/tie format (e.g., you can hover your mouse over a target in the Eve radar to identify a ship, you can use the Eve radar to lock-on, approach, etc., a target by right clicking on it in the radar, the Eve radar gives you better debth perception than x-wing/tie -- so you can quickly estimate how close the target is to you).
Setting aside all the nice things about the Eve radar, it has problems:
(1) Objects in the radar should not be light-blue, as they blend too easily into the blue radar background.
(2) Make the radar opaque to background space. I frequently must adjust my camera angle just so I can cut down on bright space vistas that are intefering with viewing the radar. I normally want to see what is on the radar, not what is behind it. I can adjust the camera angle if I want to look behind the radar (and usually do anyway as the radar confuses the view).
(3) Do something to improve the response time to right-clicking on targets in the radar. I frequently have to right-click on a target two to four times in the radar before I can get the target options menu.
(4) On the lines of the last two points, right-clicking on the radar should not bring up target menus for items in the background space. The target icons on the radar are small, and if I am off in my selection by a micron I don't want to be confused by the target menu appearing for the planet behind the radar.

diffrent ranges for diif sets would be nice also and maby have stuff interfere with it so u could pull some tricks they us in air combat... flying close formation so they whole unit looks like one trgt

The most annoying thing about the radar is it is set at a different heading to your ship, i.e. the target can be dead ahead of you but the radar shows it off to the left.
I vote for Elite style, make it a fixed angle (or variable but not associated with your camera drone), also colour coded symbols, and the symbols match those in the main view too (circles for gates, squares for stations, etc).

I'm sure the devs are well aware of the problem, espcially after they put in the hide radar option :)

I have found that after you use the radar awhile, you get accustomed to the view-direction of the radar being the same as the camera drone. Since the direction that your ship is pointing in combat only effects movement (and then only slightly for quick turning vehicles), it does make some sense to have the radar set to the camera drone view.

For me, the most irritating thing with radar is that it changes direction. Not radar, but ships showed there should change their placement and height in response to camera move (hence my comparison to and request for Elite-like radar). Currently, trying to make quick check for visual distance/placement of targeted ships is one big pain:
a) you have to put your camara in the way, that radar is visible at some "natural" readable angle b) to make some other changes in direction, you (usually) have to change camera placement again, remembering, where would you click previously (example - you reoriented your camera to look at radar from top, but you want to fly in this direction next. c) sometimes it's difficult to distinguish between, if we look at radar from top or from the bottom. d) if radar's plane is parallel to "space's" plane, radar is of course useless, which happens a lot in fight, when ships fly around each other. Solution: a-c :/
In the heat of fight, there's not time for a-d points, especially with 4 targeted ships at once. Despite that, it's just irritating...

Don't mess with the best, or at least not much.
The original Elite radar was the finest radar I have ever used. It was a planar ring tilted up slightly. It had a grid of fine dots inside. Then had the lines tracing up or down to the target. It was very easy to see if the target was in front or behind via the small dot grid. No shading means no visibility problems.
CCP, I suggest you go old school here if possible. Get a lot closer to the original.
You can see a shot of the original here: http://marvin.cc.fer.hr/~capica/redirected/64imagegame1.shtml
It's the 14th or so down on the right.
Thanks, Darcon.

The radar is too small to be really useful so i've got pretty used to not using it at all.
I'd like to see a full screen radar/movement system more akin to homeworld so you can see more detail and plan movements tactically.
That would allow you to plot waypoints and be able to give movement orders to team mates it would be awesome

I've been using manual scanning over using the radar. IT seems you can zoom out and cover all the same area.

I would have to disagree with some of the above - the elite radar (which I used and loved for years) worked brilliantly with the way elite was controlled, but the current radar works better for Eve if you know how to use it....
Since in Elite, to fly or fire in a direction you needed to move your ship in that direction, the static radar worked well - you aligned the target you wanted with the horizontal and vertical guides so it was "in front" of your ship on the radar and bingo! you were pointing at it and could fly at it or shoot it.
In Eve, to fly in a direction or to target something in space, you need your camera drone pointed at it, not your ship. If you use the same trick with the Eve radar, getting the target "in front" of you on the radar, your camera is pointed at it and you can double click to fly there, warp at it, look at it, target it and blow it away, whatever.
The only change we need imho is for the above suggestions of the symbols matching those in the HUD and for the contrast of background and objects to be a bit better (like white on very dark blue). _______________________________________________
