Edited by: Ventaran on 24/09/2007 13:00:59 Currently I'm mining with an Osprey (3 Miner II's, 1 Standard Missile Launcher, 1 Ore Scanner, 3 Medium Shield Extenders, and CPU Enhancers/Cargo Expanders (based solo or group mining)) and I'm mining plenty of Rich Plagioclase (staying in 0.7).
I got my Cruiser skill at lvl III (would take about 7 days to train it a lvl higher) as well as Spaceship Command (at III).
This night training for an Industrial (Badger MkII) should be done so I can start jetcanning.
Now I do like mining and I mine with my corp every now and then, but I do want to be able to mine safely in atleast 0.4 on my own.
So the question is...should I go for a Mining Barge or for a Battleship (would be the Rokh as I'm Caldari)?
In 0.4 or higher I don't want to have to warp back and forth between ships every time a rat spawns. I'm leaning towards the Rokh myself (and get the Barge after for corp runs) but I'd like outside opinions.
PS: Could I safely mine in 0.4 with my Osprey?

Easy.
Rokh mines more than a Retriever but less than a Covetor Rokh costs more than a Hulk but mines less than a Hulk
There's your answer. Of course, I'm not considering training time, fitting costs etc etc

Edited by: Dretzle Omega on 24/09/2007 14:27:27 You would think the Rokh could mine more than the Retriever, since it can pull in 480 m3 a minute when outfitted with 8 Miner IIs. However, if you are focusing on the mining path, you'll likely have things like Mining Level 5 and Astrogeology Level 3 - 5. This brings the Rokh's intake at 780 m3, which is 165 m3 bigger than it's cargo hold, so you're wasting that much ore each minute. The Retriever, with 2000 m3 can hold the cargo for each cycle of its mine. Also, Mining Upgrades would then do nothing for the Rokh, since you don't have a big enough cargo hold anyways.
Mining Barges are really the way to go. Sure, there are ways to expand your cargo hold, but like I said, then you'd lose out on benefits of Mining Laser Upgrades or whatever else will help you out there.
I'd suggest moving down to 0.5 with the Osprey immediately and start mining some better ore, like Kernite or Omber. With just a standard launcher and two scout drones, I can easily take care of 0.5 rats, and keep on mining at the same time. I'm working on my skills to get a better missile launcher and another scout drone or two (maybe a mining drone while I'm at it). Just remember to pull in your drones before you warp out, as they'll be left behind. I can't say about .4 mining yet, I haven't moved down there. Maybe when I can earn enough money to afford to lose what I've got :P I'll move there. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Unless you'd cycle your miners of course... -----

Yes, still, aside from that taking more attention than necessary, if he's a serious industrialist, training for the barges won't be wasted time. He can get to a Covetor -> Hulk and be pulling in way more. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Might want to work on your learning skills if you haven't already, or try to get a few implants, since it takes me under 4 days to train cruiser lvl IV.

Yeah, get your learning skills up first.. atleast perception and willpower if your training ships to 4. And if you enjoy mining go for a Hulk its worth it just for the extra cargohold. But fix those learning skills.. 7 days for training cruiser to 4 means you havent done much learning skilling :P

(Forum chose my alt instead of my main so this is Ventaran talking)
You can mine Kernite in 0.5? I thought it was limited to 0.4 and below. I could cycle the miners on the Rokh and put it in a jetcan or something similar. Currently my Perception is at 13, with one implant and the skill for it is at lvl 3.
I don't mind learning the levels more, but not if learning a new level takes longer then the additional skill point takes off from the skill I want to learn.

Well, I suppose, for my own sake, I shouldn't have even told you that. But yes, Kernite can be found in 0.5, if you look in the right places. However, you'll forgive me for not telling you where you might find it, as that would probably be counterproductive for me. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Get your Learnings up, then go for a Covetor. Procurers are patently worthless, Retrievers are pretty nice though. Get yourself a Mammoth instead of a Badger Mark II, they hold considerably more, and the training time isn't much more.
Also, these two sites may help you.

Almost anywhere in Amarr space has kernite in .7 and below....
So that's still a massive region to cover ^^

""Now I do like mining and I mine with my corp every now and then, but I do want to be able to mine safely in atleast 0.4 on my own.""
You will be better off in a battleship in 0.4 BUT it is not safe AT all, if you are going to mine pick a system with alot of belts and hide in the middle ones and keep your self ready to warp out to a safe spot. Trust no one in 0.4 on your own!!.

You'd be safer mining in 0.0 than in low sec. More pirates in low sec than 0.0. That said a rohk can tank and mine in 0.0 so you'd be doing well. For mining high ends in empire I'd say go with the barge. Get to the covetor as quickly as possible and then eventually move to the hulk as it's awesome. You "can" tank in 0.0 with a hulk but it's an expensive setup.
I'd say get with your corp and do mining ops with a few barges and a couple battleships for defense and one hauler. Then you'll be in good shape.
