Hiya,
I have just returned to the game after a long break (3 Years) and I am trying to work out the best configuration and ammo for my ship.
The thing that confuses me slightly is the Accuracy fall off and Optimal range.
If I have a weapon with an Optimal range of 1,875 and an Accurancy fall off of 4,000, then I had presumed that I want to be dealing damage from 1,875 and any shots from over 4,000 will have a much lower chance of hiting.
The problem is though, how does it work when you have an Optimal range of 16,000 but an Accuracy fall off of 10,000? Does it mean that at 16,000 I am slightly less likely to hit, but when I do will do more damage, or is one of these numbers a red herring?
In an ideal world should I be aiming for an Opitmal range and Accuracy fall off that are almost the same?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My assumption was the optimal range was the best damage. Any range under that should be your max damage, then damage lessens for every period of accuracy fall off.
So, optimal range is 16,000. Then for every 10,000 more you get a degree less of damage. So under 26,000 would be your next best range. Under 36,000 would be your next best. I could be wrong, though. I'm pretty new. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

You will hit a stationary target up to your optimal range with little problem.
At optimal + fall off, you'll have a 50% chance to hit.
At optimal + double fall off, you'll have a 0% chance to hit.
Using your example of a 16km optimal and 10km fall off: 16km = optimal 26km = optimal + fall off 36km = optimal + double fall off.
If a target is close (well under optimal range), then they may be moving faster than your guns can rotate, but that's a separate tracking issue.
I advise reading the Tracking Guide for a refresher course.

Range has no direct effect on turret damage.
Range has an effect on whether a turret hits, which technically affects damage, but not in the way you're thinking.

At Optimal Range or less you don't miss due to range. At Optimal Range + Falloff you hit about half the time. At Optimal Range + 2xFalloff you only hit about 5% of the time. The progression is a smooth curve. Generally it isn't worth using your guns until Optimal Range + Falloff.
That assumes that there is no relative velocity between you and your target that will cause Tracking problems. Tracking problems get worse at short range so against small fast targets you might be better off fighting somewhere past Optimal Range. Read the Tracking Guide ( in Player Guides ).
Damage for guns appears to be related to how good the hit is and randomness. Both tracking and range affect this.

Thanks for the replies all, they were very helpful.
I am currently running Tier 1 missions with Blasters, but based on the replies and seeing the range available I will probably look towards rail guns for Tier 2 and 3.
I will also have a look at the tracking guide for further info.
Hunt well and thanks again.
