This is a re-post on a previous idea that another user have made. ( older post have been locked due to inactivity and i find it an amazing idea hence why i re-open this )
Current state of skill training we may refer it as Passive , as it doesn't require you to do anything except put it in your skill queue and Wait. implants can improve this but it's not much...
Active Skills Training. See it as a Active shield hardener , it is still passive giving you the normal skill training rate when you don't use it , if you do activities affecting this skill it would switch to Active , skilling depending on your activity you are doing. ( passive time still remain it doesn't go away , just eat chunks of that time when you successfully complete a task )
example: Kernite Processing V , my current skill is lvl 3 , to get the bonus time reduction on this skill would require me to do 2 actions.. A) go out there in a belt and mine some Kernite then go back to the station and Refine it ( the more you refine the more you get rewarded ) B) buy kernite off the market / contract and refine it ( the more you refine the more you get rewarded ) since this skill is a reprocess mining the kernite wouldnt put that skill in active state , it will only be active when you reprocess those kernite.
Also there is some condition for this skill to get affected. The current skill you want to be active NEEDs to be in your current skill queue. skills not in your skill queue won't be affected.
So let's say in my skill queue i have Scordite Processing III and Kernite Processing V while not in my skill queue i have Veldspar Processing IV and Pyroxeres Processing II , i got out there and mine some veldspar / pyroxeres , kernite , scordite...
When reprocessing those ores Only Scordite Processing and Kernite Processing will receive the bonus since they are in my skill queue.
Same idea with the drone training / missiles / shield / armor / Electonic skills and many other skills can be set to Active that way.
For exploit purpose ( old post was flamed on and called exploit cause the idea was based on MISSILES which the exploit mentioned was " get a buddy in a tank and fire missile on him all day " )
Make it that it only work in PvE.
Please keep the reply constructive , if you disagree with this idea it is totally fine but make a constructive post saying Why you disagree, If you agree with it and would like to change or throw in some new ideas please do so i will add them. |

With all due respect, this isn't WoW. The only thing guys have that have been around a while is the fact that they have skills they have earned. It adds value to a character. This would just destroy a character market (No I don't buy and sell characters) and make it so a younger character can do stuff he wouldn't otherwise be able to yet.
Eve's well balanced in my opinion with it's ability to train while offline, and speed of training. New characters already get a jump start with a free implant that stacks with other implants (lasts 30 or 60 days can't remember which) along with other side affects that go with it.
I have toons ranging from 3 million skill points to 60 million skill points. To change this training system would in my mind be equivalent to the stupid crap that blizzard does over in WoW each time an expansion comes out. They decrease required experience to level in older areas of the game, and increase the experience given by the same area mobs to try to PUSH people into end game content quicker. There is no end game in Eve and the learning curve is like a cliff. Now you want to take a newb, and give him the ability to fly a battleship before he even has any concept of what it "really" takes to fly it?
This is an absolutely stupid idea that stems no doubt from the all American mindset that one must have "instant" gratification. Put in a movie, load your missiles skills or refining skills, turn on your lasers and make some isk. If you stop watching your training points accumulate it doesn't seem to take quite as long. :P

One of the great features of this game is that it caters to the casual player by allowing them to train even while they're offline, there's no grind for skills, which a lot of players enjoy. EVE used to have some sort of active skill point earning I believe during beta and it was removed, CCP obviously thought it was a bad idea since it's easily farmed.
And why would it only be for PVE?

I mentioned PvE so that it may seems less like an Exploit for the missiles / other skills related to PVP that may be exploited. I ain't against having skills active lvling while PVP'ing. |

Eh i used to play WoW not anymore , from what i recall there's no such thing as active train skill in WoW... no idea why you are comparing the 2...
i think you might have read the whole thing in a bad way.. never i mentioned it was " instant " no where i mentioned " you buy your skills " lol... IT IS STILL PASSIVE , but ACTIVE ( small bonus ) on the tasks you are doing. not saying it's INSTANT lvl up for doing that particular action. see it as having an implant +10 instead of an implant +5 for that particular skill you are " actively " training. |

I have trouble to understand the reasoning behind your feedback guys..
It's like you are saying " i don't want to get rewarded for playing / doing activity " you are saying you prefer to put a skill on queues , and come back few days later when it's over and put another skill in and repeat.... someone mentioned " you won't know how to fly a ship with an active skill system " , well how you learn one if you don't play ?
This isn't taking away the passive skill we currently have so go offline if you want it's fine.
This is to reward people who are actually you know ... Playing the game activly ? on a daily basis ? enjoying eve for what it is.
to sums up , when active it could take into effect the implant you have , when passive it's the normal rate of the implant , when active it double the implant for that skill .. max +10.
I have NO idea how the "active" skill was during BETA ... was it 100% on activity and no passive ? if it was yeah i can agree it would be bad.. , this is not the case tho. |

You are already capable of grinding in EVE since that's apparently what you want, you just do it for ISK and not skillpoints.
I don't think you understand how this works. If there is a way to accelerate SP gain, people WILL find a way to maximize SP/hour, and then it becomes a grind.
I like being able to log in and do whatever I please however i please without worrying that I will be gimping myself in the future by not grinding SP.

The reward one gets for playing EVE is playing a fun videogame about internet spaceships. Why is this not sufficient? |

No. No. No.
The EVE skill system is beautify exactly because it is completely disconnected from the game play. This lets you concentrate on playing the game rather than grind your skills. As was shown when this was in the game, such mechanics only promote idiotic behaviour, botting, and generally exploiting the hell out of the system.
Also, tying it to PvE is moronic -- rewarding one activity over others is a complete no-no. It also ties into a completely different problem: this kind of idea cannot be applied sensibly to most skills in EVE, so it is inherently unbalanced and therefore broken by design.
Playing EVE rewards you by letting you play EVE without any concern for irrelevant stuff such as doing the optimal thing to gather the most SP. It rewards you with battles or ISK or colourful local chat or exploration or any of a myriad of other things. It does so without imposing any "right" or "wrong" way of getting things done. This is more reward than any kind of grinding system could ever hope to bring. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

tell me how you would design the active SP system that would both give people bonus SP for engaging in PVP, while simultaneously not allowing them to just kill their alt repeatedly for easy skill grinding.

Its your idea that is an 'afk fest'
Oh, I need to increase my navigational skills -> Orbid the station at 5000m with my afterburnar on and go to bed.
Oh, shooting skills -> Orbit the monument with a hold full of the cheapest ammo and plink at it all night, go to bed.
What about marked traders.... or Alliance CEOs.... where do they get their extra skillpoints from????
When Eve has built a unique and extreamly balanced skill system, why do people keep trying to change it into something so 'every other mmo'

If this idea was ever implementsd I would certainly leave and I would imagine so would a good number of other players. I've played other games that let you grind skills and it was utterly banal beyond belief. EVE lets you get on with more important stuff than advancing your skills through repetitive actions. If you can't find anything more fun to do in this game than that then you're missing out on a lot of good stuff.
As mentioned, it was originally implemented during beta, as I recall, and was then removed as it was exploited to death, as it is in most games with such a system. Good riddance. The skill training system has worked for nearly 10 years now, it does not need to go backwards with this kind of change. |

+1! No, I take that back, +2!
This would encourage people to actually play the game.
Obviously, there would be limitations, and there would have to be measures to prevent the abuse of it, but I think it would be a pretty nice feature.
If CCP decided to make parts of the game Free-to-Play, then just restrict it to paid accounts. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. |

woot ! positive feedback , didn't think that would happen !! lol thanks!!
Like i said before , the current skill system the passive one wouldn't be altered , the active don't force you to go out there and grind. if you don't like to grind well don't your not being penalyzed because you ain't grinding.
I see it as i am running level 4 mission all day long , and it would be nice to gain some bonus as i pew pew with my missiles or drones or tank, doesn't have to be a big bonus , just something to make it look more " nice " more polished, yes i do like to see my ISKs piling up in the wallet , or getting some nice loots , upgrading new ships & what not.
Tho while i do this i often look at my skill page and i find it kind of lacking , seeing those big numbers of 10 days / 30 days skills and there's no way to improve them further, i mean i do have plenty of other skills i want to get , what will i have to play the game for like 10 years before i will finally get what i was aiming for ? , think most of you will agree that playing 10 years is a great idea and only the most " elite " player will make it... Not everyone is this dedicated into the game or can afford paying a subscription for leveling " ONE " skill. which is why sometimes the game feel empty or discourage new comers.
Nice system of active skill could possibly fix this as not only making the game look more rewarding on the career path you choose for your skill.
and for what Amaroq said....

As for only the most "elite" players. I have a character with 18m SP, it can do pretty much everything sub-cap that my 70m SP toon can. In fact, it's better at piloting T3s.

The point is some people would actually like to grind for more than just reputation or isk. I can imagine not everyone can afford two accounts to train for example an Industrial toon and a PVP/PVE toon at the same time. Maybe they don't make enough isk to do it either. Imagine how those people feel? ''I gotta wait 2-3 years to be good at both professions I want to do''
Who the hell wants to really wait 3 or 4 years to be good at a few things in the game. Some skills should be grindable in the game and I think other people feel the same way.
Yes there are implants and respecs here and there but it really isn't much.
If you really stop to think about it....... You live in a highly advanced civilization that has figured out how to cloak ships, jump ships across the universe, build stations, mine moons, implants and clones, etc., etc., etc., so why in the hell does it make sense that it takes so long to learn certain skills after learning certain basic skills previously?
Hey guys! I learned Frigates to 5, Destroyers to 5, Cruisers to 5, but..... Now its going to take me a month to learn Battleships to 5? After already taking almost a month to learn every other class to 5? Is my character stupid? Just doesn't get how to fly a ship? Has to take remedial classes? Oh okay.. I got it. Where can I hire a tutor to speed this up some?
Okay so what is the deal? All of our toons are just handicapped or something? I'm an absolute PRO with medium lazors but OH NO... Don't give me LARGE LAZORS... HO NOOOO.... I JUST WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM FOR ANOTHER MONTH OR SO....
That's just... Gay. In an epic proportion. |

Well don't abuse it if you find it boring lol!!! THE WHOLE POINT , was to make it " a side bonus " to your current " activity " If you don't feel like it's much , if you feel like it's a grind , just don't do it , it doesn't penalyze you , hey you've been skilling for over 10 years without it , why would you feel forced to do it now ?
This mainly help out the new comers to eve ( first day ) , remember your first day in EvE how massive the game looked and felt like being opressed cause everything is expensive , takes very long to get something done , lots of skills you have to train which you quickly realize 21 days / 60 days trial ain't enough ( AND you can't learn most of the skills on trial ) , so you are left with 2 choices , leave it there it's a boring game everything takes too much time and it's not for you, or keep it cool and sub for it even knowing you will be there for a year or 2 of training for basic cores and maybe get something done with 1 of your career path you choosed.
It takes too long imho , for a new beginner ...
You also mention " this game is free to play " , well yeah if you can plex it , now tell me how you gonna Plex it giving the scenario where ... you start the game on a trial , you know nobody, even now after 4 years i still can't seem to be able to Plex both my accounts... So it's not free to play.
As for the abusing the skill... I'm sure CCP can prevent that shouldn't be too hard for them to balence it out. |

Reply to some of the points and posts in this thread before continuing to attempt to forward your ideas please. Ignoring them just makes this thread look even more terrible. As for only the most "elite" players. I have a character with 18m SP, it can do pretty much everything sub-cap that my 70m SP toon can. In fact, it's better at piloting T3s. Driitzz Ryu wrote:Amaroq Dricaldari wrote:

I agree. Erm, this game is free to play?
Did I ever say it was? No, I just said that if CCP ever decided to make the game free-to-play, you should still get benefits for actually paying for the game. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. |

So what you want is not re-balancing of time based skill queues into semi-passive experience point grinds, but instead merely faster training?
It's still no. If you think people are going to be any better at this game when they start because they gain SP faster, or they're going to enjoy it more because they've read hundreds of guides saying "when starting out, spend three days shooting civilian guns at the monument in Amarr to train gunnery to level 5.", then you're wrong.
It's a boring grind, it'll be exploited, it was tried and abandoned in the beta ten years ago... etc.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:It takes too long imho , for a new beginner ... In your opinion, fine. Look up Emoleas Ozran, he's a late 2011 toon with about 6m SP, yet at one point he kept up with me on the top killers list for a month until we both turned carebear. On top of that out of that alliance he's now one of the richest there, all from bowling about low sec doing exploration sites in battlecruisers/assault frigates.
What takes too long for some people is simply learning to play the game. It has very little to do with SP.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:You also mention " this game is free to play " , well yeah if you can plex it , now tell me how you gonna Plex it giving the scenario where ... you start the game on a trial , you know nobody, even now after 4 years i still can't seem to be able to Plex both my accounts... So it's not free to play. You don't need to know anybody, I've just been playing solo for months and I can plex three accounts just fine. Hell, I even bought an extra toon for 14b while I was at it. Emo plexs his account too I believe, again, on a character which is under 6 months old.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:As for the abusing the skill... I'm sure CCP can prevent that shouldn't be too hard for them to balence it out. We are playing the same game right? You realize Eve players have a slight reputation for abusing game mechanics? |

If this happens I'm going to emo ragequit and so will a lot of other emo kids. The point is some people would actually like to grind for more than just reputation or isk. I can imagine not everyone can afford two accounts to train for example an Industrial toon and a PVP/PVE toon at the same time. Maybe they don't make enough isk to do it either. Imagine how those people feel? ''I gotta wait 2-3 years to be good at both professions I want to do'' Who the hell wants to really wait 3 or 4 years to be good at a few things in the game.
This post alone shows the typical mindset of the 'bigger/better/faster/more' mindset and delivered with the expecte level of eloquence and grammar. I think it's sad that some people think that sp are the only way to enjoy this game. Yes they allow you to have new ships, modules, etc but part of this is that you have time to actually figure out how best to use those new toys. Player experience can be more valuable than mere sp totals, but some will never see that so they'll perceive the problem to be lack of skills.
Carry on, nothing to see here. There's a reason this had to be reposted, and others will post this same pile of tosh again and again....

that kills the entire idea behind it . so no. Tho minigames seems fun !! ( that could be another idea un-related to this tho )
and holy crap the amount of negative feedback on this again...
Sure guys sure ... you've earned it , hey you can fly some nice carriers guys , how many time have you spent away from the game while it was in queue , how many month did it take without you doing ANY effort while it was training ? yes yes .. you totally deserve it. /sarcasm off
Are you kidding me ? you saying you know better how to fly a ship without doing ANY effort for it than someone who is activly doing stuff with it ? go buy common sense.
But beside that your perspective behind this idea is flawed, this is unrelated.
This is not a " oh look i shoot somebody , give me my new rank asap now " To keep with the concept of EvE that skills take time to level up , same idea applies with the active . it's a " SIDE " bonus , you know what this mean ? it's not PRIMARY , meaning it's not forcing you to use it , heck you might even do activity which affect the skill you currently leveling and you might not even notice that it's there and you getting bonuses for it.
I don't want to turn this game into a grind fest with this idea ( as it is already a grind fest ), PRIMARY skill is the passive we already have , secondary would be the active , which double the implant effect you currently have based on the skill you are doing and activity you are at.
If you feel like it's forcing you to exploit it and go grind it. seriously ... just uninstall EvE already cause you have failed to comprehend. |

And it automatically stops being a "side"/"optional" thing when it gives you an edge over anyone who does not take advantage of it.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:Are you kidding me ? you saying you know better how to fly a ship without doing ANY effort for it than someone who is activly doing stuff with it ? go buy common sense.
You first. Simply training the skills to fly a ship does not mean you KNOW how to fly it. What the currently skill system does is force you to fly the T1 variants of more advanced ships for longer periods of time. While this may not sit well with you, you must admit to its elegance as it accomplishes two things; 1) you are effectively forced to gain a feel for the innumerable intricacies (or lack of thereof) behind each ship through its basic T1 version and 2) it keeps things cheaper for the beginning players so that when (not "if") said player loses a ship they will not cry over the loss as much as they would have had they lost the advanced ship they worked so quickly for.
Your "advancement" idea does not help people "learn" their ships as it instead encourages people to grind as much as possible (in a number of already mentioned ways) to use "the best" ships and equipment available. It's like saying that doing lots of PvE will teach players how to PvP better.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:how many time have you spent away from the game while it was in queue , how many month did it take without you doing ANY effort while it was training ?
I take time off from the game when I want to and log in when I want to. Likewise, I do things I find interesting and don't do things I don't find interesting because the (more or less) flat rate as which skills time down allows me to focus on the actual game (or meta-game) rather than on SP accumulation. I don't have to ask myself, "well... things are slow...should I wander around for an hour or so on off-chance that there might actually be something to shoot or fire up my alt with a perma-running tank at the POS and shoot it til I can fly the best Caldari frigs?" WoW uses a skill system similar to that used by a board game way back in the day. Just because something is old, doesn't mean that it's bad. At the same time, just because other systems work a certain way it doesn't mean that every system should work the same. XP based skill systems have their pros and cons. EvE's system has its own.
Driitzz Ryu wrote:put one in and wait til it's done ? not needing for you to play it ?

It was fine then; it's fine now; and breaking it by introducing a mechanic that's not compatible with goals of the system doesn't improve it. In fact, 10 years ago, it had the exact mechanic you are asking for and it was promptly removed because it proved to be such a bad idea.
Also, as ShahFluffers points out: you do realise that most other games use a system that is essentially unchanged since 1974, right? That's nearly 40 years (and the basics of those systems is actually older than that).
Quote:do you see what's wrong there ? What's wrong is that you assume that all games work the same and that they all follow the same logic. If this system gets put in place, eve will REALLY be filled with BOTS(mission bots, mining bots, market bots & now... SP-Grinding BOTS!). And we all where that is going to lead us.
Lets not even forget that an insane
Yea, it sucks to be flying that T1 forever.... but that's wat meta-1 to meta-4 mods and faction ammo are for. In fact I dare say that I use faction ammo more often than T2 ammo since t2 ammo has tracking penalties... so in tat case, as far as mods are concerned, T2 may not mean the best.
But by flying a cheap ship, I can get a feel for the ship and know where it's limits are before I sell my liver and kidney to get the T2 version. I've seen plenty of T1s take out Big Ass Ships. Just saw a Velator(rookie) **** a Tornado today. :D
Also blowing up a 10 million T1 cruiser in a fight is lowers the potential of rage-quitters compared to a 100million T2 cruiser.
Eve is all about the META-Game, not about how much iskies or SP you have. It's because of that T1 Rifters Blobbing the S*** out of "Uber-Spanking-Faction Fit" Battleships becomes possible. Tell your friend to think out of the box, work around the SP limitations or do what the rest have been saying - go to other MMOs. :D
Maybe if one uses the Plex/Aurum to exchange for accelerated SP gain for a week or 2(1.5x?). That much I can entertain. It's prolly gonna kill the TOON market though. :(

Ok, this is not impossible, but ultimately it has to be popular in order to be desirable.
First, the characters are being trained by downloading skills over time. More difficult or complicated skills take longer for this reason. It happens regardless of your location, interrupted only for clone jumping.
If you want it to be faster, you need to define how you would increase the speed. The current version uses your connection to your pod's systems, so it would need to replace that in some manner, or improve upon it.
Where do people go to learn anything? Schools or universities.
For a nominal fee, possibly modified by your faction, you could dock at a station run by the school teaching what you wanted, and double your learning speed for as long as you were docked. In the event this is considered to reduce playing, the character would just need to get a booster drug for 24 hours of double speed on the specific skill. (Have lousy faction? Cannot get to a teaching school for the skill you want? These could be sold on the market for a fee as well, but you would need to pay the price the reseller set instead)
This could be balanced, but I personally have little interest in them. I just like figuring out puzzles. |

Really I think the real problem is based on the habits and experiences gained in other games before coming to EVE, having to grind for more xp/skills seems ingrained in those games which is why I won't play them and why EVE is the only game I really want to play.
Do yourselves a favour, if you've come from another MMO, please leave all your preconceptions at the door, EVE isn't going to change and become just like that old game, you're in a new game now. The skills train while you spend time just playing the game and enjoying yourself rather than having to waste time worrying about how much effort you're putting into gaining the next new toy.
At first gaining skill points as quickly as possible is of paramount importance, I remember my first few months, so much to train and I wanted to do it all as fast as possible. Recently I took a little time out to train some alts and it was quite good not having to bother with having implants in my head, I was able to jump into an empty clone and not care about losing training time.
Quite enjoyable really. in other MMO's stupid people are annoying. In EVE they are a valuable resource /facebrick for those times when /facepalm just isn't enough

No thanks. I must say I agree with this.
I played a MMO several years ago, that kept changing details like that with little warning.
I had a character I used on raids, and I had gone to great efforts to train them on various abilities, so he would be more desirable to choose to be a part of these events.
Then they started giving away the abilities, by making it so people now started with them for no extra cost or effort. I was quite upset by this, as I felt cheated by the changes.
Earning abilities should never be diminished by even the perception that others are able to achieve the same results with less effort.
This could certainly be seen as doing that. |
