Mmmm .. legendary. It comes mostly from forums and being who they are.
Avernus, TRIGGER, CYVOK, Shardale ... Hippoking/Dark Shikari ... BOB directos, Mindless, Verone.
I think I would call OrcA also somewhat celebrity for that diplomatic stunt a year or a bit more ago. At the end of day most legendary players are leaders of well known organizations or experts in some forum sections. First ones are a bit better known than section experts. When someone who can send 1000 starships (like Molle) after you if you really really **** him off or say 100 really scary ones (like Minless or Seleene) then one tend to pay attention.
EVE is a bit too big to know all legends on personal level, but a bit more names rotate in forums than in local chatter. I'm sure that people who frequent in say .. crime and punsihment know each other better than say residents of market discussions forum section. And vice versa.

Joshua Calvert. He was a sort of Ur-Dark Shikari b4 he got banned and had the longest corp history anybody had ever had. (was also in m0o for about a day)

mo0 and Zombies corps. I don't think many people playing longer than 3 months go without hearing about them and about the naughtiness in Yulai.
Istvaan (sp?) of GHSC and GHSC itself. The article about that epic corp theft/assassination and the story about Nightfreeze is what got me interested enough to try Eve. (yes I know the Nightfreeze story was fiction)
Farjung. Never met him, even when I lived down south for a couple months, but everybody seems to know about him.

Some legends that I've come into contact with.
Shamis Orzoz - I was in SNIGG for a while before I had to quit due to RL commitments. This guy really knew his stuff.
OmberZombie - Used to be a big feature on the forum community a while back
DigitalCommunist - Great poster with a real insight into EVE. Haven't seen him around for a while.
Easy Target - Helpful guy and a mainstay for the EVE-i community.
Jim McGregor - Best poster on EVE. His opinions are always reasonable and informative. Seems like a great guy.
There's one that I'm forgetting but hopefully I'll remember him soon enough. Used to post on EVE-i from time-to-time. Damn I miss EVE-i.
HippoKing was not a legend. He was an irritating forum *****. I was so glad when he got banned because it made the EVE forums less inane in general. Never met him in-game though. |

eve's only comparison would be either curzon dax's parodies or that Eve/300 mashup. maybe the Zombies tanking concorde or the fifty billion smartbombing vids too.
as far as real honest-to-god legends go, most of them have been named up thread. although i seem to remember Ivan BlackForestGGteau being a slightly chubby canadian raver, which kinda spoils the mental image of a shadowy cat-stroking mastermind in finely tailored suits i'd built up.

A lonng time ago, I was a third of a pirating trio, along with Elisium Dammar and Tank CEO. Only lasted about 20minutes, but the system scanning skills and ruthlessness that Tank displayed, along with Elisium on teamspeak excitedly telling everyone about our escapades, easily made it the most fun I've ever had playing a computer game.

I dunno, I always thought of Tank CEO as being more of a moron than a legend, specially from his forum posts. Although at one point about 4 years ago, they suddenly changed and he became a little more literate...so I assumed his account changed hands.
People that I remember, Miso, Lord Zap, Stavros, Drunkenmaster, Skillz. Not necessarily legends but some were infamous and some were fun to read on the forums. Was there someone called M0lly or Molly? Seems to ring a bell but it has been rather a long time.
My favourite 'Pie rat' was Lilan Kahn, who only blew you up if you refused to pay the ransom. The rest weren't real pirates, just people who liked blowing other people up :P (nothing wrong with that, but at least be honest about it ;))

There are a few people who do alot but decide to keep out of the limelight. Not that hard in eve to avoid fame if you don't want it.
Then you have the smaller fames, the people who are known on a smaller scale. I wouldn't call myself anywhere near famous, but most of the people in Help channel and EVE Uni, along with eve radio have at least heard of me.
