To be honest we should launch or sonsider building then launching a small ship/probe for these kind of things, just to make us rest better at night if thats all it ends up as. A thing that can move around the solar system to some degree to an asteroid, then continuously fire a laser in its side to produce thrust on the asteroid. I would then stock up on things like plant seeds, fish tank, fish, buy alot of feed corn, can opener, ect.... Generally enough supplys to last me about 5 years underground and some thing that can be used to make breathable air. Then I would tell the rest of the world and then see how it all goes down from the comfert of my new home. listen to me on bob radio, heavy metal, random babbling, and live forum coverage.

All it would take is a little nudge, over time that nudge would would be enough to move it's trajectory a lot. Also although highly unlikely it would be possible if the comet came from a highly eccentric orbit under cover of the sun. Unlikely, but possible.
