So I just got this game, and I'm already in love with it. However, I have some questions.
1. How do I put stuff up on the auction house?
2. I'd like to be a miner so I can support my other friends while they pursue other things. Where should I mine to begin with, and does anyone have tips for a prospective miner?
3. At what point should I start buying upgrades for my ship? And where are good places to find a lot of stuff for sale?
4. How many ships can I control at any given time?
5.As a miner, what skills should I focus on?
That's all I can think of right now. Any general tips would be greatly appreciated as well. :D Thanks in advance. |

1.) Market: Right click the item in your item hangar (must be in a station, will not work from your hold) and click sell, if you like the price you can just click sell, if not you can click advanced, set your own price and length of time to offer the item(s) at that price.
2.) There's several mining guides. This one for example
3.) Define upgrades? If you mean better modules- as soon as possible. As for where to find stuff? Trade hubs, Jita, Motsu, Amarr, Ourselart, etc.
4.) 1 per account.
5.) See [2] |

1) Right click the item, click sell, then click advanced. Enter how much you want to sell it for in the text box and how long you want to list it for
2) You should mine in either .8 or .5 security space. .8 doesn't have rats (iirc), and in .5 you can't be killed by other players.
3) As soon as you can. The ship you start on is very low-quality, so you won't be able to fit much on there, but when you get into new ships, you'll want to get some decent stuff. For a new player, you'll find pretty much anything you want anywhere for sale, just check the market
4) 1
5) Pretty much everything in the "Industry" family of skills, you'll also need spaceship command skills to get new ships.
General tip- train for caldari ships, They have the best mining frigate in the game (bantam), the best mining cruiser in the game (osprey) and a great, cheap industrial to move stuff around with (badger mark II, you can't train for that on trial accounts though)

How do I switch ships?

How to switch ships.
A.) buy another ship (that you have sufficient skills to fly) B.) Right click ship in the ships hangar and select 'assemble ship' C.) Once said new ship is assembled, right click again and select 'make active' D.) Open the fittings window by clicking on the button or by pressing 'Ctrl + Shift + F' E.) Make sure you equip ship with decent equipment, if you are not sure what to equip it with, ask someone. 3.) Profit |

To clear up a bit about mining: if you want to support other players with mining you'll have to skill up to mining barges. 0.9 and 1.0 have no rats (0.8 does, but they're easily killed with the barges drones.) Some regions have omber in 0.6 which spares you from destroyer-class rats in the 0.5 belts. These may be difficult for your drones to destroy at your low level.
If by ship upgrades you mean rigs, don't even worry about it until you've got several million skill points finished at least. They're extremely expensive for low level players and you have better things to spend isk on at that point.

1) You want the market. As a newb, you don't have anything worth auctioning. That's for very rare things that fetch huge prices. For everyday stuff, the market is much easier. See the above advice.
2) Halada's guide is the best, I hear.
3) I'd start as soon as you have some money. The stuff you start with is useless. To find some place, just open up the market and browse around. This will also introduce you to many items in the game. Then see where most of the items are being sold, make sure its sec status is 0.5 or more, and set sail.
4) As many as you want, but you can only fly one at a time.
5) Mining, Astrogeology, Refining, Refining Efficiency. Then Metallurgy and the ore-specific refining skills.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

>< Now, every mining guide I've seen so far has said the first thing I should do is get more/better mining lasers, and a bigger cargo thing.
Problem is, the station I'm in after doing the tutorial either doesn't have much at all on the market or it's crazy priced. For example, the only mining laser upgrades on the market were a minimum of 150k, and after doing the tutorial missions I only had 80k. I can't remember how much the cargo thing was, if there even was any..
Now, normally I'd think "I'll just do agent thingies to make money", but the agent won't give me anymore jobs. >< How am I supposed to know where in the huge solar system I can go to get new jobs?

Your remark about the 'auction house' gave yourself away. Glad you left world of grindcraft for a real game. I strongly suggest looking up the stickies at the top of the forum and reading Hammer's guide for experienced MMO/WoW players. It's tailored at explaining what's different and how you should approach this game as opposed to the instanced carebear land of Blizzard. After you read up on this, you may have a whole new slew of questions, don't hessitate to ask them .
Stick with it. EVE has a near vertical learning curve, and pretty much everything you learned in that other game you will find to be useless in this game. Once you bite trough this though, it becomes an extremely fun and rewarding experience and you'll sue that other game for wasting your time so badly .

I read Hammer's guide as well (coming from about 2 years in WoW to EVE) and it's VERY good for newbs (such as myself). Once done with that guide, browse through the Player guide, then if you have more questions, read the Knowledgebase and do the tutorials. Once you're done with that: PROFIT! ^^
Also, there's always the forums or the in-game help channel. Welcome to EVE!

Nope, the number of high slots, as well as the number of "turret hardpoints" and "missile hardpoints" (how many turrets or missiles you can fit) are inherent in the ship. If you want to increase the number of high slots on a ship you need to buy a bigger ship. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Keep in mind I'm just starting the game.. I don't even know what Jet Can mining is.
Also, I recently did a job to get Chondrite(sp?), but when I went to sell it/refine and sell it afterwards, I couldn't. What gives?

Chondrite is a mission version of Veldspar, I believe. You only can use it to turn it in for the mission. Last I checked it was not saleable. Just trash whatever extra you have that you didn't need for the mission.
Jet Can Mining: I tried to explain, but maybe didn't do a good job.
Your cargo hold is limited. Usually when you mine you will pull in enough ore to fill up the cargo hold in one or two minutes. So, every one or two minutes, you could take the ore back to station, put it in your ITEMS hanger, then go back to the belt and continue mining. However, when you do that you spend almost as much time traveling to and from the station as you do mining. Still, this is decent enough mining when you first start the game.
When you can train the ship "Industrial" skill for your race, go ahead and do that. This will allow you to fly a ship with a large cargo hold, somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 m3 to 6,000 m3. These ships are pretty much only good for one thing: hauling large amounts of stuff.
You can right-click on anything in the cargo hold of your ship and select Jettison. When you do this a can will appear near your ship with the object you jettisoned inside it. While your cargo hold is small, the jet can can hold up to 27,000 m3. Now when you mine, you can put your ore into the jet can. When you have several thousand m3 of ore in the jet can you can then fly back to station and switch into your industrial ship, fly back to the jet can and grab your ore all in one shot.
The dangerous thing about this type of mining is that someone can take from your jet can. If they do, they are flagged so that you can shoot them down without CONCORD coming and shooting you. As a newbie, don't even try to retaliate. Some of these people might then put their ore into their own jet can, even telling you they were sorry and you can have it back. This is a trick to try to entice you to take from their jet can, which would then allow them to shoot you down with no interference from CONCORD. To be honest, though, if you find a relatively quiet system and mine in a belt where there are no others at the time, well, I've never gotten stolen from in over 3 weeks so, to me, the benefits outweigh the risk.
But don't do that until you can haul it back in an industrial. ;) ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

Edited by: Matalino on 02/10/2007 18:54:28 First clue is the mission level. The mission level is always the same as the agent's level. There is a big difference between each level and you will often need to move to a higher class of ship.
Within each level of mission, your two clues on the diffuculty are the time allowed to collect the bonus for the mission and the size of the reward offered. As you can problably guess you get more time and bigger reward for harder missions.
I recommend that you note the names of missions as you do them. It will not be long before you start seeing the same missions over and over again. From the name you can recognize missions that you had trouble with in the past.
There is no progression in mission diffuculty, they are simply drawn at random.

Mmkay.. my friend just got the game, but he chose Caldari while I'm Amarr. How hard will it be for us to see each other?
Also, I think i|i missed up my map somehow.. it's just black and empty when I go to it now as opposed to it being filled with stars.

Not hard. Everyone is on the same server.
It is problably easier for him to fly to you than the other way around as he is going to have less stuff to move and won't have any standings with agents in his starting area. All he needs to do is open up the People and Places search for the system that you are in, Set Destination and off he goes. (He might also want to tell the autopilot to avoid low sec just for safety. )
Even though he is Caldari he can run missions for agents in your region of space.
Race doesn't matter for anything except picture and starting skills.

I have heard alot of people complain of this, although it has not happened to me.
Try restarting the game. If that doesn't work you might need to delete the c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data\ccp\eve\cache folder.

When the map is open, check in the top right of the screen. Make sure that "Star Map" is selected and not "solarsystem map"
It could also just be that you are zoomed all of the way in, press and hold both mouse buttons and move the mouse up to zoom out.
As a side note on the map, if you click "flatten" (top of your search box), it will orientate it which makes it the same as other players. When you see people discussing the south / north / east / west of eve that is the view they are referring too -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Matalino on 02/10/2007 20:06:38 Regular agents will never stop giving you missions. Nor will they get harder. Effectively they get easier as you become better at them. The reason to look for a new agent is because the missions have become too easy not too hard.
My prefered way of looking for agents is to use this site that was built and is hosted by Chribba. There are lots of other websites that also have agent databases on them. Other people prefer to use the in-game map or the show info window for NPC corps.

You could start by selecting the Courier divisions and sorting it by required standings, from there select the faction/corp that you want to work for and/or possibly the region where you want to live. It really depends on who you want to work for.

You are "safe" down to 0.5 security systems.
The risk with working in lower security parts of high sec is that some of the missions might take you into low sec (0.4 or less). I recommend that you have a look at Ombey's map to see what that area of space is like.

As mentioned, up until 0.5 all the security rating does is dictate just how screwed up someone's security rating has to be before the local navy starts firing on them, and how long it takes CONCORD (the in game police) to respond to an unprovoked (also called suicide gank) attack. Only when you set foot in 0.4 or lower is the consequence of CONCORD intervention removed. This means that you can fly up until 0.5 without having to consider different security preparations than you already need in 1.0 (note i am avoiding the word 'safe'. Just saying that everything used in 1.0 to keep you safe works in 0.5). This area of space is called High security space. It is also sometimes called Empire.
Ores found in high sec are:
Veldspar: A good source of Tritanium and an ore that a very revered player of EVE is obsessed with . Scordite: The main source of Pyerite. A good ore to mine. Plagioclase: Another good source of Pyerite, and an ok source of Mexallon (currently the most valuable of the low grade minerals). Pyroxeres: A 'jack of all trades' ore that yeilds a bit of all the low grade minerals. It also yields some Noxcium, a high grade mineral otherwise only found in low sec. Kernite: One of 2 high sec ores that yields Isogen, the most valuable (base price per unit at least) low grade mineral, and the best source for Mexallon. Omber: Best source of Isogen.
The ratings of best source are based on yield per m3 rather than yield per unit. m3 is the most important measurement for mining as this is both how your mining lasers work (they yield a number of m3 per cycle based on skills, modules and other enhancements) as well as how your cargo hold works (which is what all that ore needs to be shipped home in). You can do the rest of the math by looking up the prices of the minerals i mentioned in the market. Note that just how profitable ores are will also depend on how efficient you can refine them. Ultimately most ores are judged by their mineral value (don't overlook the sell prices for ores asked in missions though!).
