.mkv is a container format. Video codec is usually h264 or xvid/divx. It also supports UTF-8 subtitle streams.
mkvtoolnix will probably be useful.

One minor suggestion:
Given that most of your videos will have a black background, I think you should add a white outline to your "play" button in the center of each video. Currently, it can be a bit hard to distinguish from the video depending on the background.

I have gotten an e-mail or two insinuating that I am in competition with EVE-Files.com, this is not the case. Before the Tube went live, I had talks with Chribba about the possibility of some sort of connection between our sites, the conversation has stalled but I am still open to doing something jointly between the two websites.
I am not here to make money, not here to make buckets of ISK (in fact I am giving 1 billion of it away,) I just wanted to make a site that the community would appreciate and enjoy. Not to compete against anyone or any other website. I am trying to make the site as professional as possible but I am not a company nor do I have expert coders with me I am just a individual EVE player trying to give back to a community that makes this game a pleasure to play.

Two more suggestions, would make it easier for me and many others in porting our videos to eve-tube:
1) Allow remote download/upload (How ever you see it) from another HTTP mirror, i have 10-15gb of videos on my server and i dont wanna hafta upload em all at 60kb/s :x (Making my connection unusable in the process)
2)Possibly look into the option of having an FTP upload feature, helps especially with people on slower connections as it allowing them to resume uploading. So like ever account has an upload and view only ftp account releated to it, and the server auto purges complete files once thier converted to flv format and then purge the ftp off uncomplete files once every 2 weeks or so.

You should look into getting some Google Ads for funding - It should let you get some better servers and offset your operating costs. We can't expect you to keep this website up for us for free, especially since it looks like all the extra traffic WTFPWND it.

Think you could give your site the black and grey motif of the Eve-O forums? Would make a better contrast to the mostly dark videos over the current blinding white..
