Hi, I was wondering how I could counter a caracal? I fought one in my rupture but it COMPLETELY outdamaged me (i'm fitted with artillery) and I had to run like a *****. ALso I tackled it in my rifter and was completely owned. I got away both times but... damn, how do I beat that thing?

Very easily?
Just a fyi, Arties are lower dps then Autos.
And Caracals dont really have a 'very' good tank, so just get up close and wham him a few times.
Im ugly, just look at my face!

Try a stabber, you can fit a mwd or ab and get in close and let your autocannons light him up. I would also take a nos to keep his cap down and then bring a scrambler and maybe some other electronic goodies to make him do what you want.

caracals get owned easily solo.
Punisher at frig IV or V. autocannons. small nos. warp scramb, ab. small armor rep 2. cap power relay for the rest. should beat most caracals. they most likely won't kill you and at worst you won't break their tank.

If you have frigate 5 I bet you could do it in a jag with auto's.
also a rifter might be able to do it but you need to speed tank, "I think". I've never done it in a rifter.

i dont have a jag, only the rifter. do i stand no chance in the rifter? last time, by the time i got in i was down to shields. with my AB i only go about 500m/s at orbit so, i thought i was going to die for sure.

actually using the missile guide you won't get a damage reduction until you start going over 1km/s. your sig radius does give like a 61% damage reduction. don't think you could do it in a rifter but you could try. worst thing is that you lose a rifter.

Caracal can be surprisingly lethal at range but active tanks on a Caracal suck and passive tanks take up all his slots so get nice and close and use blasters/ACs/pulselasers and tear him to shreds. A Stabber, Vexor or Thorax will do the job.
Just dont go toe to toe at range because the fights on his terms.

don't a caracal's missiles do the same damage at range as they do close up?

yes but your not in range to shoot them from far out so they can just shoot away without any fear.

Edited by: Zendoc on 07/10/2007 07:03:17 Yeah... if you lost to a caracal in a rupture you are doing something wrong. What is your ship setup?
*edit* Ruptures can fit a massive armor tank, one that rivals the thorax in fact. On top of that, for a tier 3 cruiser it moves decently fast, plus it has a double damage bonus. You can easily tear a caracal apart.

Get in his grill and bust him a new one. Caracal's go down in less than a minute to any reasonably fit (close range) cruiser.

Basically u're looking at getting as close to your optimal as possible with the heaviest damage you can do. Autocannons deal out more damage over time than Artillery, so this means you've got to get close. Don't worry about fitting a 20km scram, cus u're gonna be about 3000m from him, so 7.5km is fine. Speedtanking is n't really an option here, you don't have the luxury of range here.
That said, you want EMP ammo, and to get as close to your optimal from him. Because your speed won't influence the damage enough, Keep at range will do just fine. You'll have 0 transversal this way, and you'll land better quality hits. goodluck!

Rifter probably not unless you have tech 2 autocannons on it, even then it would be a gamble. With only 3 turret hard points, you're not throwing off amazing damage, especially not in a tech 1 frigate. Noted, most caracals fit heavy missile launchers instead of assault launchers, but a rifter is not moving exceedingly fast so you should still take some significant damage from them.
If you have Frigate V, get mechanic V and hop in a jaguar. Those can take down caracals from now until the cows come home. (note get tech 2 small autocannons first).

If you know you're gonna be up against a caracal fit a 1600 plate + kinetic hardener on your ruppie. As said, use AC and sneak up close.

Rupture has some trouble fitting the 1600mm plate, but it handles just fine using the 800mm plate.
A relatively cheap and effective low skill tank for the rupture i found was 2 small armor repper IIs, 800mm plate, kinetic hardener (or no plate and 2 hardeners), and then add a gyro for your 5th slot. When you get your skills up high enough you can replace the plate with a Medium Armor rep II and fill the empty slot with another gyro. (you might also consider replacing the plate with a second hardener so you have a little bit more agility)

I'd be really careful about taking on a caracal that's fitted to take out frigates and the like. Sensor dampeners or EW are your best bet, but if they have FoF missiles a speed tank is your only real option.
That, or a Caldari Navy Hookbill. I doubt a caracal could break the passive regen on one of those :P

Just use short range guns and fit a mwd, scram, web on any t1 cruiser that has a turret damage bonus. Plate, damage mods, and a damage control in the low slots, and if you can use em, ecm drones will really help.
Thorax and rupture should be able to shred the average caracal using short range turrets, while the arbitrator and vexor can easily do it via drones. One fun ship to do it with though is the Celestis. Just damp him to hell and back, pew pew with whatever guns you have, and let your drones do the rest of the work .
As for frigates, a maulus or rifter ought to be able to do it if you're well fitted and you know what you're doing. _________ I R teh Minnie Meanie |

Use 10 thoraxes (safety in numbers).
More seriously: use a 1600mm plate and at least 1 active kinetic hardener. Use EMP or Phased Plasma ammo and hobgoblins.
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

Caracals are fragile and slow. The also have a poor damage output.
If you get close, it will die fast. You can get close by going fast. You just need to tank it's fire whilst you close (or warp if it's far enough away that it doesn't have you tackled) -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? GMP and TNP |
