Don't confuse having to purchase a new OS (Vista) with having to upgrade your graphics card. DX 10 is part of Vista so if you have a computer that meets the requirements to run vista you shouldn't have to purchase a new $300 graphics card. Also if the new graphics engine bogs down a modern PC(PC's that are no more then a year and half old), then CCP did a terrible job. DX 9 has been around for awhile now.

You will see the new models, the new effects, just not all of them.
CCP explorer has said otherwise, if your card does not support sm3.0 you will not be able to use the new graphic engine.
So get a card that supports sm3.0 if you do want to see the new graphics engine.

Though I'll be happy finnaly to get to play eve (since beta) on a new graphics engine, did CCP leave the old/current graphics engine on the Software DX8 platform still or did you moved/optimized it for Hardware when rewriting the new grahics engine for trinity II
Or it's just gonna be the same old old old classical version left untouched as we are using right now
And CCP please post new trinity II pics of the thanatos/nyx in the dev blog!

Yes you can but only on a few select MXM enabled laptops which are basically very rare!

Will we have more options in the graphics section ?
To permit users to find a compromise between performances and effects, unlike the actual "All or Nothing".
I hope one day that I can activate Scramble Effect but not Turrets (that I can finally know who is the ***** who tackle me ) or reduce Explosion complexity to boost performance, etc...

Neither of those cards support SM3.0. You'll need a GeForce 6 or ATI Radeon X1300 at minimum for SM3.0. |

hes wrong or they wouldn't have said you need a SM3.0 card .. you will have NO CHANGE in gfx in rev3 if you don't have a SM3.0 capable card..

BITS is crap.
1) It doesn't work. Its assumptions on bandwidth are horribly flawed. Its nothing at all like a bit torrent client that lets you set those parameters yourself.
2) Its known to corrupt downloads.
Why not just use a torrent application (WoW anyone?) and let the user throttle the download him/herself?

What CCP Explorer seems to be saying (and what makes the most sense):
There will be just one graphics engine, Trinity II, whichever version you install. Trinity II has two render paths inside it. One requires DX8 and has hardware requirements identical to the current client. The other requires DX9 SM3 and therefore may not work on older graphics cards. This is the same approach that pretty much every modern game takes, they tend to just hide it behind "high" or "ultra" quality settings that simply don't appear if your hardware isn't up to it. Maintaining different render paths in the same engine is also vastly easier than trying to maintain two different engines, which is why I'm certain this is the route they will have taken.
Going for the "classic" install simply means you use the existing models and textures, run through the DX8 render path of Trinity II. As Trinity II will be making proper use of your graphics card via either path, this is still likely to offer much improved performance over the current client, even if it doesn't improve the appearance.
Opting to install the enhanced graphics download will give you the new models and textures, and allow you to use the DX9 SM3 render path, which will give you better-looking graphics in addition to the other advantages of the new engine. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

For all the ex WoW players can we have some sort of graphical presentation about the concept of having 2 and then 3 clients? There could be pretty pictures with flowers, kittys, and fluffy bunnies. Maybe some sort of finger puppetry could be included?

You've all forgotten the most important question: will the bells and whistles of the new engine turn EVE's rainbow starscapes into a psychedelic headache-causing nightmare, or will we finally be granted true 'dark' space? It'd really help make things more atmospheric. -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |

A worry I have about the upgrade is the performance of the new client. I have a decent system (P4 3.0 GHz Hyperthreading, 2 GB of RAM and a Geforce 7800).
Currently it has a dual-screen setup and I can easily run 2 EVE clients simultaneously. But will I still be able to do that with the new client? .

I mean current eve doesn't really used pixel shaders, you kinda skipped 3 generations... :P

Hopefully this is the case. I'm the type of person that really doesn't care what the game looks like as long as the game play is good (counter-strike 1.6 anyone). I end up playing on an older laptop most of the time (1.6ghz p4 mobile, 512 ram, gf4go 440) with no sound or effects turned on. hopefully this patch will make the game a little more playable even for me.

My interpretation was always that there was just going to be the current graphics engine and the new graphics engine, hence why CCP have said it will be optional to download the new engine, which will be large, or just patch to Rev III, which will be small.

I have an NVidia GeForce 6800 and it looks like it supports DX9SM3
I read this on the NVidia product info page:
Quote: The NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series of GPUs provides a groundbreaking feature set for computing, including full support for Microsoft« DirectX« 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 for unparalleled gaming effects.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
Just to be provocative...
What is the point of the DX10 client? So far the API has turned out to be a joke: no big graphical benefit in any titles so far, massive performance hit, need to install Vista, etc. And need to buy an expensive graphics card like an 8800GTX, that may not support DX10.1 when it gets released.
in case you were worried about your hardware... the classic client won't see many changes in gfx. so your old rig will probably run just about the same.
regarding vista. i'm not using it myself, but the whole 'vista sucks' is outdated tbh. initially, nvidia drivers were poor but also the way vista adressed virtual memory was crap. so, all gaming benchmarks were much worse on vista (although video encoding for example was quicker). since then things have changed, so before you post any 'vista sucks' comments, do some research.
This is from the Trinity 2 engine thread..
No, without SM3 you will only have to download a 15-30 MB update with the new Trinity graphics engine and the new code for the expansion.
So what I see is happening is that *everyone* gets the new gpu enabled graphics engine but only those with SM3 enabled cards will get the new models and shiney new effects.. Hence the 900mb background dl for those SM3 card owners.. Awesome..
But..
Has the DX8 client been optimized in any other way past the ability to use the gpu? Specifically I want to know if lodding has been added to the DX8 client.. If not then its going to lag almost as bad as the current client when you get a bunch of capitols and such onscreen as they always render at full polys and texture resolution even when zoomed all the way out.. Which is why we get such aweful client lag in big battles.. Please tell me just a part of those 50 man years was spent adding a lod for each DX8 ship..
Unless you're running a completely different client to me, or have deliberately unticked the "use LOD" option in the graphics section, there already is LOD in use. Some of it is amazingly ugly at certain distances, and there have been oddities such as ships changing colour at certain LOD levels (usually with the T2 ships and someone forgetting to edit a LOD layer), but it is there. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |
