Seen alot of talk about graffix cards and Trinity and the nvidia 8000 series won't support it. I currently have an ATI RADEON« 9800 Pro, works perfect at the mo running eve. Can someone tell me if I need to upgrade.

Edited by: mechtech on 15/10/2007 08:47:25 I think you need a shader model 3 card, so yes, you do have to upgrade to use the new engine.
You can always stay with the current engine though.
I'll edit my post if I find it to be otherwise.

I'm still a bit confused whether the dx8 client will have the updated textures like the dx9 client (minus the sm3 shading effects) or whether it'll just be the same old Eve we have now, with ALL of the new content restricted to the dx9 client. it doesn't affect me since I have an Nvidia 8 series card, but my roommate has a 5 series Nvidia card(sm2 ftl;( ).

everyone will be moving to the old client when they aren't playing solo missioning anyways :P
at least for a while, and then when computers are cheap the new graphics will be used by everyone.
Hell, if anything the new video only showing pretty eve will be able to make tons of people join eve. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

Nobody needs to upgrade.
If your PC is not the fastest thing out there. The Original Client will still work.
BUT.
The New Trinity Engine Version of EVE will be available. Essentially 2 Clients. 1 Game. All the same content on both. No restrictions. Just better graphics for the ones who decide to use the newer client.
Anyone crying about running multiple clients with the new graphics, if it lags, use the old client. And those who have older cards like the OP, fear not, you can stick with the original engine.

You do not need a SM3 card to use the new engine.
You do need a card with SM3 support to use the new graphical content, however.

The best bit about this is that the new client will probably run smoother, thanks to sleeker coding and a better job all round.
The biggest FPS hog is the UI.

Correct. Rev3 will use an optimized engine even if you stick with DX8, so you'll see an improvement in performance either way.
The client basically stays the same, but running smoother. You then have the option to download the DX9 SM3 content as well, if you wish to do so and your computer supports it. You'll also be able to switch from DX8 to DX9 rendering (and vice-versa) at any time.

Indeed, I'll be happy just to have a UI that doesn't freeze for a second whenever something happens.

So if I want shiny new ship models I will need to upgrade to an SM3 graffix card, otherwise I can still play with the old models and still have the improved performance and content?

It's quite easy to understand, actually. I'll try to make a more clear explanation.
Revelations 3 will include a mandatory engine upgrade. This new engine will have increased performance, not relying on CPU as much as the current one. The engine will render graphics in DX 8 (like the current engine) and occupy roughly 15-30 MB of space. If you can run EVE now, you will also be able to run the new engine.
Along with the engine, there will also be an OPTIONAL update that allows the new engine to render graphics in DX 9 SM3. You will need a video card capable of rendering Shader Model 3.0 in order to make use of this optional update, which will occupy roughly 600-900 MB of space.
Conclusion: You'll need a DX 9 SM3 card to have the new shiny graphics, but you'll have an increase in performance either way.

Wrong!!!!
They have said very clearly that everyone will upgrade to trinity 2, but there will be 2 different content packs, one with dx8 content (low poly models, much less flashyness, basically the same as the current one but faster) and the dx9 with sm3 (high poly models, flashy effects and general eye candy and still faster than the current engine).

Pretty much if your graphics card cant use SM3, you install the basic version - which is the current version but a tad faster. If your graphics card does support SM3 you'll get the option to install the newer flashy stuff.
Also, hurray for 8800 GTX. Supports the new engine and can make toast for you. -----------------

Yeah i find it odd its not just a DX9 version anyway and then the better version for the SM 3 crew. DX9 has been the standard for years now=/ Funny i can play a game like Oblivion with SM 2.0 but not little old EVE...

As far i'm aware both versions normal and shader 3.0 will come with new and improved textures for all ships.
the main difference is that the shader 3.0 will come with a hell lot of eye candy graphics capable to even throw more realism to ships.
if you check the screens for the new ships models they don't look so complex that you need one of the lastest cards to run. (my computer is amd 2900 with radeon 9600 pro) and i'm quite sure it can load with ease those new textures.
on the other hand if you watch the eve video about ambulatory in tentonhammer, you can see a whole more detailed ammar station, wich makes me think that's how the shader 3.0 graphics will be. Every man know he's going to die, but no one believes such thing can happen |

Originally by: CCP Wrangler To try and sort this out:
We currently have our client, this client you use every day and it will remain.
In the november expansion we will release Trinity II, a DX9 version of the client.
So we will have two clients at this point, the original and the Trinity II with DX9.
At some point in the future we will also release a DX10 version, but this is not the Trinity II expansion.

well i know the dx8 will come with a new trinity engine, that's why i tought ccp may add some based new textures, offering an improvement from current ones.
anyway we just need to wait a bit more until the mistery resolves.

Oh i'd love that to happen, but the dev post i quoted above claims the client won't change (just the new content aka new t2 ships etc.). On the other side, if your pc supports sm3, you can download net content etc, you will be able to download the new trinity engine, and hence get a performance increase... Also, how do you KNOW that the dx8 engine will support the new trinity engine? Are you an Dev alt or something?

You seem to be mistaken. The current nvidia 8XXX serise cards (8800GTS,GTX 8600GTS,GT, ETC) all support DX9 and will run the Trinity II DX9 client fine I'm sure. I would LOVE to know where you got the crazy idea a $600 top of the line card would not run a almost 5 year old version of Direct X 9c
Personally I can't wait till next year when the DX10 release comes out...
Cards I'm sticking too...... Long list but two of them are a pair of 8800GTS.
