It depends on your friend's interests as there's a bit of everything to offer. Economics, trading, shooting things, running your own business, being a pirate, empire building, etc. Overall the freedom to make your own goals in game and no significant restrictions.
The hardest part is understanding the interface which takes a few hours to get to grips with what's going on. After that it's up to the individual.

Eve is not for everyone... maybe it's not for him.
Let him watch you play a bit, explain what you do. He'll either get hooked or not be interested. Nothing wrong with that.

I've introduced a lot of friends to eve over the years. Honestly, I think most of them regretted playing it.
Maybe it's just not the game for him.

For me, its being part of a single world, a universe where corporations go to war, pirates roam deep areas of space, and the feeling of victory when you actually have something to lose.
I always use the Sandbox vs. Theme park example. With theme park MMOs like WoW you are in a constant battle to keep people entertained after they have been on the same ride over and over. When the players themselves are shaping the world, its totally different. Tell your friend to get off the damn swing set and come play in the sand.

Realistically, a great number of mmorpg players cannot handle a game that does not tell them where to go and what to do next. Look at the number of help/rookie/new citizen comments that basically boil down to 'Okay I did the tutorial but they didn't give me a quest to go somewhere else for more quests. What do I do?'
and yes a majority of them do say 'quest' |

If he dont like complex games maybe eve is not for him.
Perhaps if you say what kind of games he likes and why its easier to find the good parts that he might enjoy.

Exactly what I was thinking. If "complex" is for him a reason to not play a game, then maybe Eve isn't for him.

There is one over-riding reason to play EVE.
The Thorax. This flying **** is something no other game has. Its sheer awesomeness is displayed in its every line and curve. Destroying all opposition to its will, it goes wherever it should please, leaving no enemy unstained by its wrath. The awesome potential of this ship is enough reason for anyone to play EVE. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Eve has the coolest explosions any game currently has to offer. Then link him to a vid on youtube of some sorts. If that doesn't convince him, nothing will. I've addicted 3 friends to watching me play by simply showing them a few youtube clips of fleet battles. They're cheap asses and won't pay for the game though. Darned subscription fees

He has to enjoy figuring things out to like EVE. If he doesn't want to even try the free 2 week trial then there's no point in trying to make him play it.

The complexity of Eve may not be what some people are looking for but it sets it apart from other MMOG's.
Other MMOg players are just players, Eve players are the elite. Not only do we play the game but soon learn and understand the dynamics behind it as well. How many other MMOG's can you say that about?

My first recommendation is he shouldn't. I do not recommend to anyone I know personally to play Eve Online. I'll be there to help them if they decide to play, but I discourage it simply because I know it's a bad idea for most people. ---

Eh? Isn't it a bad idea for most people only insofar as they aren't used to the style of the game? Some might come to view things differently if they actually try it for a while, but that is much less likely to happen without encouragement.

Sorry, but the better players in any mmo learn the underlying mechanics just as thoroughly as the hardcore Eve players do. I had a LOT of in-depth discussions, debates and even arguments with various guys when I was playing AO. Discussing how to reperk so you can get that lvl190 Head on your Atrox takes tremendous knowledge of the game, tons of patience and a willingness to listen to others. Just like Eve.
It's a testament to the GAME when it's complex enough to require those sorts of discussions. It's a testament to the players when they bother to persevere past their problems.
Most Eve players are not 'the elite'; most are nubs who just like a sci-fi game with pretty explosions. I don't have a problem with that since its a game and games should be enjoyable. Just don't ask me about the finer points of a setup unless you have 30 minutes to spare. Each to his own, I say. ____________________-__________________________
To the OP (yes, I'm finally getting to you ):
Among other things, Eve offers tremendous depth in its player run politics, sense of accomplishment (ie when you *finally* manage to kill someone else in a close fight or get your first POS up and running), and it's unsurpassed economic system. However, all of these require a lot of patience and perseverance to achieve. Obviously, I consider that rewarding since I'm still here after all this time. Many will not. Fine.
Where it often fails players is it has little immediate gratification for something billed as a 'game'. In WoW or other fp MMO's, you actually interact with the environment in an immersive way. Eve... well, not so much (no, Eve's overview doesn't count). Also, other MMO's have the 'Ding!... Grats!' feature. That's great for fostering a sense of accomplishment in the short term, though I prefer Eve's system myself.
Instead, we spend a lot of time grinding away (whether jumping a freighter 30 jumps, running yet another lvl4 for isk to pvp with, or gatecamping to stop those dastardly war decced fellows from getting away). Eve is boring a lot of the time. Boring enough many of us have forums or a movie running on the other monitor to stop us from falling asleep in between mining laser cycles. For a 'game' we pay for, that's pretty un-fun and odd tbh.
Obviously, I've not mentioned many things, but I hope you get the drift: Eve is for those who value patience, can commit a lot of time to learning the game, and enjoy the tremendous social aspects of Eve.
Other types of personalities will probably be better off with CS, WoW or HL2. No shame in that as all any of us are trying to do is have fun and enjoy our evenings. Hopefully your friends can see the merits of Eve. __________________________________________________ FOLD. The Ultimate PVP. It really is Us vs. Them. clicky |

You know some intelligent females? Holy crap, you must be in the only place where they exist.
Females don't often go for space sims, they are more into WOW and games such as that. Mostly females prefer roleplay.

My wife and I had a friend stay the night last week. Her daughter saw me playing EVE and said she'd heard of it but couldn't understand why people liked it.
I showed her the market interface first; she's a smart kid and very quickly got the idea that EVE's deeper than "Kill the worrt outside of Anchorhead for credits". Then I brought up the map and showed her the 5000 solar systems the game has and pointed out that it's one single universe.
Finally, I described the skill training system. At the end she understood why I played it. I offered to send her the trial thingy but she preferred less mentally-intensive games, I think.
It's no ding on anyone who wants mindless entertainment. We all like different stuff and can be entertained in different ways. Me, I like the depth and complexity of EVE, but not everyone wants that kind of gaming experience.
One thing that's unique about EVE in my experience is that the people who play it are perfectly willing to say "eh, maybe it's not for you." to people. That's not something you see in any other MMO I've played.
