Me and a few corpmates have been trying to decide which would be better to train for, Cerberus or Drake. We're not sure which has a better tank, as we've killed cerbs before but i'm pretty sure theyre supposed to perform a little better than the one we killed.
So what should my buddies train for? HACs are nice but expensive, would they be better off in drakes?

Players who don't have the skills to fly a BC should not be in a cerb, they're much less forgiving and expensive than a drake.
The drakes tank is 2nd to none. The cerb is a great ship, but not one you should have inexperienced pilots in.

Cerb is better than drake in a few limited situations. HAM ratting in enemy territory where you need speed, (Ie. Commander hunting in Delve hehe) and small-gang firesupport.
Other than those two roles the Drake is better.

lets just put it this way the Drake got its ROF bonus nerfed because of the Cerb. id like to see the ROF bonus return and the Resistance bonus turned into an all damage types bonus. as the Ferox has a tank bonus.

QFT. Anybody who can't fly a BC shouldn't even be looking at a HAC. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Edited by: Shiodome on 20/10/2007 00:42:52 it's quite reasonable to not bother with BC's at all... younger players (myself included) need to specialise to compete, so i think the guy is asking what to specialise in. saying 'if you can't fly a drake, then avoid HAC' is missing the point, you can fly a HAC perfectly and not even have BC I trained and there'd be nothing wrong in doing that if you wanted to specialise.
that being said, depends what you're after... (imo) drake is too slow for roaming gangs, but for PvE and some gate camps (i.e low sec) it would be superior to cerb. so depends what you want to do? overall, as has been said, the drake is more forgiving, cheaper, and less skill intensive... so probably the better option.
also being T1 when and if you lose your ship, the insurance on a drake will cover most of your loss, whilst the insurance on the T2 cerb.... won't. _____________________________________ today i am this cool: [uncool]================[*]====[cool]

Drake : cheap, bricky, shortrange, high damage, huge sig Cerberus : expensive, somewhat maneouvrable, longrange, above-average damage, moderate sig Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, and KNOW you'd be better off with a Cerberus... just stick with a Drake. So... if you have to ask... use the Drake.

Agree with the previous posters, but even though a Drake is an awesome tank it's still just that. Try to sacrifice some of its tank for more DPS and the tank will just fall apart.

Gang Drake - just one version Assumes commander has L5 Siege Warfare (no warfare links, no mindlinks, just the skill). Ok, so it can't perma-tank as godly as you're used to, but it's got a huge HP buffer and can deal some decent damage. Only 3% implants are used, not 5% ones, so in case you DO lose your pod (well, it can happend) it's not such a tragic loss.
So, ok, it's not the most impressive fit you've ever seen, but it's RELATIVELY CHEAP, has decent range, decent damage, decent perma-tank and a HUGE HP buffer to help survive any attempts of focus-fire until it can disengage. Yes, it CAN tank a single DDD detonation of *any* kind (of damage) on shield buffer alone, and still have almost around 25% leftover shields even if it's the lowest-resist (kin) one and "attacking" Titan pilot is max-skilled too _

On the other hand, you CAN half-decently speed-tank a Cerberus, and you can get decent range out of HAMs (even if they're very tough to fit). _

TBH though i've been playing around with EFT and depending how far along you are in your skills you might want to switch to the Sacrilege. its got just about the same dps with HAM's as the cerb/almost the drake, and you can get up to 3.4k/sec. so you can really speed tank well and do some good damage, you won't have the range of the cerb but you will at least be able to stay close and use your speed to tank

A good t1 fitted drake with Okay/not so good skills can pound a cerberus with a decent skilled pilot.
Drake is 30 - 35mill.
Cerb is 70 - 90mill. _______________________________________________

I as a 6 month player went into low sec with a drake. I got jumped by 4 pirates in cerberuses. They left after 30 minutes because they couldn't get through my tank.
I trained up my heavy missile skills after that, because it really makes you think when you can't deal enough damage to overcome a t2 medium armor repper.

Speed Cerb? Hmm, interesting. Yes, you should be able to get 2.5k+ MS easily even with 2 BCU's installed (<3 rigs), you could even fit some damps on it and one should be fairly safe - FoF and drones could be a major issue though. Makes me want to try one...
- As for your gang-raven, yes it does provide your gang with more support but since you'll be gimped alone anyway you might aswell slap on a remote repair then.

4 cerbs couldn't break your drake tank? I think this is a huge exageration, or they all had HAC 1....

Drake's basically just better.
The tradeoff is that it's a bit bigger/slower. Cerb can be good, and a better choice if you're looking for mobility, but as has been said, if you're undecided, the answer's almost certainly the Drake - if you know why you want a Cerb, then you also know why it's better. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? Active gang Drake. Solid tank, good DPS, significantly cheaper than typical passive Drake fits.
7x HAM II
med cap booster C5-L LSB shield boost amp II photon II heat dis II Inv II
IFFA suitcase PDS II 2x BCS II
EM shield rig 2x kin shield rigs 5x hobgoblin IIs CPU implant required
Gives 581 DPS, tanks 556 DPS (max skills).
Trying to add a MWD to this is tricky, you'll need a RCU II and PDS II because of the Drake's crappy PG. But with Jav HAM range you won't need to worry about being in range - just about burning it back to a gate or getting out of a bubble...
