It's been on the drawing board for as long as i can remember. And it seems like the devs went out of their way to not acknowledge the numerous posts about it in the downtime thread. I think even the slightest acknoledgement that it's still in the works would have pleased a lot of the players after what happened yesterday.

The reason they probably dont want to implement a queue is because they dont want people to queue skills while there accts are inactive.....skills still train while an acct is inactive remember

I disagree, inactive accounts would have their que stop at the last skill started when the account was de-activated.
I think that no skill que forces people to play more and thats probably a reason not to do it.
I've got so many skills with just a few hours left that I havent had time to take care of its very frustrating and id love to see a skill que asap.

Yup.. I'm sure the player with an alt training for a cap ship would just *love* to be able to string Adv Spaceship Command 4 and Capitol Ships 4 together and cancel his account for the few months it takes to train.. Other than that all you have to do is set that secondary skill that takes a while at logoff and when you log back on reset the primary skill.. Behold.. No more missed training times for the odd server outage..

Of course there are always exceptional cases and I should think that scenario would constitute a fairly classic one but as one or two posters have already suggested, that eventuality could be addressed by simply disabling the skill queue facility on deactivation !

Plus you don't add features to a project just before release; that path leads to madness...

The biggest reason people seem to be against a skill queue is that people will farm characters. Assuming this is a real problem (only CCP could tell) then just put a cap on skill training on accounts that are inactive. Say 30 days or so.
For me, a skill queue would be the single best feature I would want from CCP. Having 2 accounts and a very busy real life it is hard having to log in to change skills all the time and I have too many short training time skills I need where I can't keep setting long ones.

Posting in a Queue thread... again.
And again I speak out in favour of a limited queue.
Being away from home for more than 6 months per year not being able to switch skills made me quit the 1st time. There's a limit to how many skills i can train to 4 to have them trained while I'm away for 6 weeks on end. Besides, it'd really mess up my skills.
It should not be too hard to implement a 2 or 3 skill queue, and to have it void when a subscription ends.
CCP's argument always has been "we want people to log in and actually play the game". Yeah, right. logging in to switch a skill takes about 20 seconds. As if that's playing a game.
I dare CCP to have my accounts banned for me letting someone else switch my skills for me while I'm away!
There's little a sledgehammer can't fix. If you can't fix it, you need a bigger sledgehammer. If it's unfixable, blame CCP. :p

The only queue that needs to be implemented is a SINGLE SKILL, that ONLY goes into effect during an UNSCHEDULED downtime. Any Scheduled downtime the queue will NOT go into effect for. This stops whiners saying "waaaa i lost xxx hours of training due to a power outage in london"
Just my 0.02 isk though, totally useless in most states including Alaska, Ohio, and Canada.

Managing your training time is part of EVE.
Queues are just lazy, and tbh, you always have a long skill that needs to be trained, and if you don't, then you screwed up.
Hell I ended up training a racial BS to 5 because I'd set it overnight or when I was trying to do short skills but needed a long pause.
TBH, if they put in a skill Queue I'd probably have 1-2 less lvl 5 skills, and I'd have every skill at lvl 3 if not 4, I don't atm because checking every hour and a half or so is annoying as hell.

If your account is closed you do not train skills during that time. I read that in the customer service area on this site somewhere. Also, how can the server set your unscheduled downtime skill to train while it is down?
For those who say it's a pain in the butt having to log in to train a skill or won't log in just to train a skill, you probably wouldn't have logged in anyways to train your skill so...
Personally, I think it would be nice to have the current skill continue training on the next level until you stop it from training. Would be good for those who work 10+ hour days. Start Generic Skill(3) Level 1 at 8am, get home from work and it's training Level 3. ______________________ There are three truths: my truth, your truth and the truth, I endeavor to find the latter. |

Edited by: Phantom Slave on 21/10/2007 18:45:09 I can see CCP's logic as far as skill training while the account is inactive. So what if somebody sets a 45 day skill, and cancels their account. They're going to come back, and that's what CCP is counting on.
Those that are opposed to skill queue's are just bitter because it wasn't implemented before, and they've had to deal with it for so long. That's my thoughts on it anyway.
*edit* And those that are complaining that they're getting 'free' skill training when an account goes inactive, that person isn't making isk and enjoying the game like you are. Where's the harm?

Implementing a skill queue might be difficult depending on how the server currently calculates skills when it restarts. Also I don't think the servers can change your skills for you when an unplanned downtime occurs as there is no database or server to use to even find out what skills are there to train in the end the server has to calculate what has happened after it is restarted. Back calculating one skill is simple, two isn't so simple, and unlimited skill queues could place an unusual demand on the database if many people had a string of short skills during a long downtime. Basically i think it might affect the startup stability of the database system if you try to lookup and calculate any more than one skill for every character on the server.

Yes I know what the devs have stated as reason they do not want to implement it. Had you read the whole thread you would've read my comment on it too. Switching skills takes abt 20 seconds. Login, switch, logout. that's not "playing the game" it's a formality.
Again, this is the most asked for feature in the game. ever. And I've yet to see a CCP response which is not utter bullfaeces.
Not responding is a failure to communicate properly with their customers by CCP IMHO. No matter how many times this topic is resurrected.

How about this for a compromise:
If a skill is not in training for over x (lets just say 6 for arguments sake) hours, skill points will automatically start being obtained, but will not be given to any particular skill. When the character logs back on and sets a skill, those points that were collected will automatically be sent to that skill.
This way will cause some loss of skill points, so people will have to log in to get the most out of their characters, but will statisfy most people unable to log on for an extended period of time.

Edited by: Cool Wave on 22/10/2007 05:04:46 I hope you all do realise that if your account is deactivated due to out of time or suspended account your character doesn't continue to train skills.
This was fixed in one of the recent patches.
i.e.
My alt was training Spaceship Command 4 to 5
had 3 days 9 hours 22 seconds left
my account was suspended 12 hours later
so 2 days 21 hours 22 seconds remain on training time.
I reactivated the account 7 days later
and he was still training Spaceship Command to V
so this training while account is suspended has no effect here... it would be good to queue skills i.e you have 2 skills with 5 hours on each and you won't be home for 12 hours to change the skills this meaning u get to complete 2 5 hour skills without hassle.
This in no way stops revenue or playing time since you have already paid in advance to play this game.. if i was at my computer 24/7 it would be the same as having a Que setup.. however people have to work to be able to pay to play this.. so the least they can do is make it a little less time consuming or problematic for the working people who pay to play.. and not just use timecards with ISK they have earnt in game..

Gamer,
That idea wouldn't work correctly, as skillpoints per hour are based on your attributes.
so how would you determine how many skill points your character should be going up by if no skill was selected.
I might train 2114 skill points an hour when training a skill required for Perception and Willpower
however i might only train 1760 skill points an hour when training a skill that takes memory and charisma.
how could you define how many skill points you should get.
And to answer any possible questions from this, if this does happen, not everyone should just get the same amount of skill points if no skill is activated as that means you would be getting the same skill points per hour that a noob player gets even when you are 3 years old, meaning that your attributes don't play a part if no skill is selected which makes them pointless.
ok.

another solution to this would be logging into the website and being able to change your skill without being in the game for 20 seconds to change the skill
i don't want to wake up at 6pm get ready for work, load my computer, load eve, login for 20 seconds and switch a skill
CCP this isn't playing the game, its called changing a skill cause CCP won't implement another solution to the busy working life of the Community.

I disagree, inactive accounts would have their que stop at the last skill started when the account was de-activated.
exactly, wouldn't be hard to make it so inactive accounts only finished out the current skill. no problem there.

i don't think thats true at all. the no queue system means i log in for 1 minute at 4am or some such crock-o-crap, or hop on at work for a second to change my skills. most people don't pay to just watch a bunch of little "meters" go up. besides it's bad enough for me as it is trying to make enough isk to keep up with the ships and modules i can put on my boat. ____________________________ the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist |
