Say if I am under attack by a Raven.
Do I have to target the missles he's firing at my manually or to they target automatically?
I'm just curious.

To answer your first question as to how they work, poorly from everything I've heard.
To answer yoru second question, they autofire on their own I believe, or at least they autotarget.

in theory, you fire the defenders and they automatically go kill the missiles being fired at you. however they dont work very well, and i really dont recommend using them.

the problem with them isnt just that they dont Autofire its that they only defend your ship. so for example you couldnt take a few Drakes, load them with assault launchers/heavy assault launchers and have them run point defense.

Now THAT would be cool. The only requirement would be making missiles a little more useful in pvp. So why are rats' defenders so useful when our defenders are so broken?

If your running a mission against gurristas and are having a hard time tanking the damage, might as well give them a shot. In pvp... I don't know anyone who uses them.
As for how to actually use them, when you see a missile fired at you, activate the launcher (has to be AFTER the missile is shot at you) and your defenders will do the rest.
PS. Use a rocket launcher to shoot them. As far as I know, theres no advantage to using larger launcher except for the increased magazine size.

There isn't. The good thing about defenders in a rocket launcher is that: 1) It only takes one defender to take out a cruise missile 2) It can fire them stupendously quickly 3) If at a long range, you can take out most of an incoming volley of cruises from a raven.
In my experience, defenders start becoming less useful at PVP ranges (<20km). -- I like cheese. |

I like to use one on my arbitrator, that ship dont really have hi-slot offence capability anyway, even catching some heavy missiles on a 1v1 can reduce some damage taken.
