Meh, a few months back I spent about 30-45 mins on my avatar as I knew it would be forever this way, I'm still happy with it; CCP spend your time on more important things...

I agree with the GM... to change a face too much would mean loss of unique id we each have. On the other hand, perhaps one day when tech allows and priority is high enough... I would like to see larger versions of chars in-game, and even perhaps animation or emote versions when PM between chars etc.

This char has almost a year and im quite happy with it.
EVE is a MMORPG not a Sims in Space.
I would rather prefer having costumysable ships than chars (not for big battles but for when you pass in Luminaire with all that people jumping around). Selling Raven BPC ME20 3M at Yulai 1st Station |

Quote: Well, one concern would be that the only reason why Eve portraits look so unique is the different lighting and background options!
(apart for Caldari, they really all look alike)
I think Orestes has a good point. I was just about to post that I would love the ability to change clothing, lighting, background, and head/eye position because that would make people's actual faces more important instead of the whole portrait.
But the fact is, except for slight morphs, the basic face for all the members of the same race is really almost identical.
Given the size of how we most often view eachother's portraits, the lighting, background, and clothing are probably the things that distinguish us more than anything else. If you could change those often it might cause some identity issues....

would be nice to have a limit on portrait change(like once a month) and it would cost an ungodly ammount of money depending on the "complexity" of the changes. (Wanna change the background? SURE! 50 mil plz..)

When I read this in the CSM I found it to be an intriguing proposition. I for one like my characters avatar (face and outfit) although I look like every other Intaki out there. I guess what I would change about it is my orientation so that my character faced out more (like my signature). It would be also nice to see implants show (like the optical implant at the top of the page). I think that would add some more depth to existing characters. As for being able to change facial features, I think that should not be allowed. As for changing your characterĘs clothing and hair, why not let that be allowed? It happens often and regularly in real life, so why not role play it?

I sometimes wonder how much Devs play the game when they say players know the portraits better than the names... do they just read the forums (except for TomB who just PVPs)?

Well to be able to do some changes would be nice, facial structure can be discussed more.
Quote: Hellmar > often players know the pic more than the name (same reason is for not allowing name change)
I don't agree with this though.
However I would rather see devs working on more important things like corp management system and tools, alliance system and tool and similar instead of spending a few hundred hours thinking about how to be able to do this change..

Check This Thread for an example of how well some people know avatars. Personally I could put a name to all but a few of those portraits. These are the portraits that tend to stand out on the boards; ingame I don't think it's much different. The people I am often in contact with, I can recognize their avatars in chat before I look at the name. ______________

OK maybe gatejumping this topic - That test wasn't too hard to name 60-70% instantly, mainly because the people there are people often writing on these forums (more or less).
Now do that in-game and count all people you meet, how many have you loaded the avatar from,
beides corp/alliance mates you will recognize how many percent? I don't see that many I know outside the group I play with (or play against *smile*). I recognise the pirates, but that is for survival, the rest of the gobs.. nope..
Oh well, sorry for this long post about this.
If a person playing think that the playing experience would be better if he/she could change the avatar then that is fine, and can be explained in-game aswell with the cloning story.
BUT again. Shiva and things as better corp functions/tools are MUCH more important.

I must say that CCP is a bit sketchy in this area.
In one sentence they say that don't want people hooping others identities because "people know the face more than the name" yet they allow numbers in the character name generation process which allow players to, as far as the fonts go within the game, directly copy another existing players name.
Better to ask the wind if it would change directions for you.
Regards, OK

Lmao..
er.. Yeah, I'd kinda like to be able to change a few things. The clone idea sounds pretty cool. Then it would cost money, plus death. So you wouldn't be changing every freakin day. *hopefully* Except alts..but.. heh they're bastards anyway.

probably mentioned, but..
Just make it to where you can only change the hair, or the cloths, background, lighting, direction, ect. On the portrait editor you would simply remove the knobs for adjust features like eye color, or the shape of the face.. piece oh cake.
The whole caching problem. Not really a problem. Just add a button near each portrait, or a rightclick option that will "Update Portrait"..

Edited by: Infection on 27/02/2004 23:18:30 I dont see this becoming something the dev's will even consider touching for awile. However, I know few people who associate people with who they are by picture, given there are many many duplicates of apearance, most go by name. So adding the function of re-editing everything but your name for character apearance wouldn't be something that would throw everyone off. If this didn't occur I would agree that being able to change hair, clothes, lighting, aswell as background to atleast give the character more life.

This attempt however is not original, for it has been sugested time after time nearly since Eve existed from what I understand. Would be nice however to see even a Mod to read this thread and make note to the devs of something obviously the community cares about. Simply even by looking at the thread views. It's of something that Eve online community cares to see something done with.

Just to add a little variety to this topic, what about facial structure changes? Im not necessarily for, or against, and Im pretty happy with my characters face(wouldnt change even the simple things) but just an idea, the structure could be changed, but depending on how much, there is a possible chance for sp loss.
ie give yourself a nose job and you just might be able to get away scott free, but change your face from fat to slim, and you could have some pretty serious re-learning to do. There would be a serious cost involved, and countdown timer until the next time you would be able to do modification(think recovery from plastic sugery :)).
Changing even the lighting of a picture, combined with facial/hair, clothing & background can also be just as big a change as facial structure imo, just take a look at the character creation process if you try that. Different lighting makes all the difference with alot of portraits, combine it with the rest, and you could easily wind up with a new character. ___
