Edited by: Sara Kerrigan on 27/02/2004 08:41:10 The following comes from a recent CSM:
Quote:
MOOstradamus > Q: (moocifer) I am tired of my char's background setting and wearing the same outfit SO when will portraits be editable ?? The thought also occurs for including a 'Clone Count' somewhere on the pic or even in char info ... Finally whatever happened to the promise of more stats - primarily measurables such as kill count or time spent in-game ??
Hellmar > The main reasone for not allowing for character portrait editing is identity hoppin
MOOstradamus > but the name stays the same :(
Hellmar > often players know the pic more than the name (same reason is for not allowing name change) Hellmar > There is also a minor technical problem with caching of the thumbnails but that is an easy fix Hellmar > If you guys deem it an important enough of a feature we can up the priority of it Hellmar > but uping priority of one thing means lowering it on another, there are also some UI issues
Wondering what everyone thinks about this as a feature. I would surely like the ability to change a few details including the lighting, background, and clothes. Would also like to reposition the direction of the face and eyes, but I'm not so sure about changing the actual facial features. While it could make up for 'flaws' made during the initial process, I'd rather the facial structure stay the same as to preserve a sense of identity in the world.
Though, I can see how such facial changes could be introduced. While I was writing a story based on an event in EVE, No Longer Original, i did some research on the cloning process. The following comes from Scientific Articles: Cloning.
Quote: Culturing a clone takes several months, but all clone stations store generic clones that are only put to use when a client buys it. The skull, and frequently other bones as well, is replaced by osteoplastic materials û soft synthetic bone polymers that can be shaped and then hardened by gamma laser irradiation. In this way, facial features and other body marks and textures can be applied very quickly. The process is very quick and is applied as soon as the clone is purchased. A similar technique is also used to adjust skin tones and give special skin marks, such as tattoos and scars. This means that the featureless clone is quickly transformed into an identical twin of the client.
So I would suggest, if this is implemented, that it could be worked into the medical facility UI. You could modify the features of your clone (for a price), and thus the changes take place following your next death. ______________

I'm with you Sara - keep the main facial structure but allow editing of background, hairstyle, eye color/direction, and clothing.
No doubt your character gets chilly going around in a string vest all the time.

I would like to edit a bit as well. Maybe no more morphs on the face, same colour of eyes etc. But surely I can turn my head and even dye the hair. Not to mention move to a different background.
I do not like the idea of changing names though. Even if this one was orginally a stuck-petition alt, and the name of the original character was much cooler. ;)

Edited by: Astrid Tron on 27/02/2004 09:48:32 I agree that some features on the portrait, hair, clothes, background, lighting, and such could be changeable, but not the structure of the face.
The name should under no circumstances be changeable, as this is the only 'identity' a player has, if it becomes possible to make changes to the portrait. Changing name, would make it effectively impossible to keep track of scammers, or to search for a specific character.
But this is not really important, I think. It is 'nice to have - not need to have'. --------------------------------------------- When you have to kill a man, it takes nothing to be polite |

Edit: dear Polaris - don't you think the filters here are a little too much ... it's quite annoying to not be able to name the room in a ship where the pilot is sitting |

i would appreciate this sort of addition very much. when reading the csm-chat i was a bit shocked about the devs response. they really seem to have given this sort of thing a very low priority.
i think this kind of little changes would help the game at the moment much more then any big additions and patches and balances. it would bring back some more of that feeling of being a very special game that all of us had the first day when creating the characters.
what i would like to see though, is some sort of 'instant-messenger-like'-features where you could create different views of your character, lets say one smiling, the other looking bored, the third looking busy, the fourth screaming as if in a fight with pirates ... and then adjust your image within the chat window with one click of your mouse. sort of like an emoticon. to display your mood or the state your in more precisely.
i'd find this very important. i would be careful though with changing clothes and background. i think too many characters look very much alike. often it is only the clothing or background that keeps them different. so it'll be better to let people make changes only to the angles, and facial expressions like smiling.

Best post ever. I am 1 week old. Absolutely despising my tatoo. If I could get a laser removal that would please me immensely.
I vote yes for cosmetic changes. After all we still have our name. Maybe make some limit like ISK or a Time Delay.

That would be great. I always asked myself why we are not allowed to change our char. the creation UI is one of the best things in the whole eve, it's an awesome job, and you can see that only when you create your char.
I don't think that changing the char portrait is an issue to identify a player. You cannot change the names, and it could be possible to create an identity tag for every player, displayed along the lines where it shows the sec, name and etc. Rping that would be so easy: "In face of the escalating illegal activities, CONCORD is issuing a new identification method, to be employed in all stations. That identification will use DNA samples, and every eve citizen will receive an identification tag, to avoid clone modification issues".
Something like that, Im pretty sure CCP is creative enough to come up with a wonderful story
I posted some comments in the CSM thread about personalization. More and more, people will want to modify things such as portraits, ships, hangar and etc. _______________________________________________

Well, one concern would be that the only reason why Eve portraits look so unique is the different lighting and background options!
(apart for Caldari, they really all look alike)

Not that i want to change my face in any way, for this the face of doom and destruction! *ahem* But, i would think, that a few plastic surgeons would have leaped through the eve gate before it crashed.
Also the criminals have used fake ID cards and such for ages.
What? We master interstellar travel but can't fake a plastic flippyfloppy or change our haircolor?

Exactly.
Most of the time we play eve all day and forget how awesome is that creation UI. I was giving it a try a month ago when my son started playing, and now again, when I deleted 1 of my alts.
Simply changing the lightning, the hair and the costumes make it another completely different char, with special mention to the lightning.
TBH, I think most players do not spend enough time tweaking their chars, thats basically why there are lots of portraits that look basically the same. But if you spend some effort, you can come up with some rather exclusive looking and interesting results
Edit: I don't know if the suddenly changing portrait is still an issue. I know that I can't wipe my cache, or Ill see one of my alts as a mad man it changes completely his appearance. It appears to be something client side, but it's really annoying. Being able to change the portrait would be a solution, altho not fixing the problem where it resides (it would at least give players an alternative). _______________________________________________

hellmar says that often players know the pic more than the name. huh??? believe me take out the names and leave only the pics and often the players wouldn't know who the f* they were looking at. besides everyone looks the same to me. black background with a gold stickman in the middle. come on, let us change our look, i can assure you if the name remains the same we will know who eachother are.

I really doubt that; the big image in the character details screen is not often looked at only once or twice and the images in the chatrooms are so small, you hardly can recognize the peeps on it.
I really pay more attention to the name since some pictures are almost equal and thus not reliable to decide on who you are talking to.
So, yes let's make the images editable. ------------------------------ Audiofreaks ------------------------------ |

I'd like to be able to change a few aspects of my avatar (background, eye direction), but I also understand the whole 'recognition' thing.
As it currently is, I can recognise most people I regularly see just from the tiny-tiny thumbnail in the chat window, and it would be a shame to lose that. .

I think redoing whole portrait would go a long way. Personally, I never pay attention to portraits, only to names... TBH, some portraits are just ugly, and sometimes I regret looking at them in zoom, hehe.
