Password-protecting a ship would make it impossible to steal... and EVE is supposed to be harsher than real life. How would you suggest we tackle that angle?
Simple, get more milage out of those Hacking devices and skills. Allow a proficient hacker to pick the lock if they have enough time and skill and get the password or just disable the password so they can run off. Even your stereo thief did not put his hand through the window and magically teleport your stereo out. He had to break the window and pry out the bit he wanted. This like anything else should take some work.

Imagine how spiffy this scene would be. You eject from your brand new Marauder class ship which is password protected like there's no tomorrow. Only to come back and notice some noob Zerg salvaging his ship into oblivion. Imagine the ISK sink! We should so DO this! ...You were suggesting that.. right?
I'm slightly uncomfortable correcting a dev, but I feel brave: Only a ship would be removed and no ISK and therefore it would not be an ISK sink. In fact insurance would have the opposite effect
And yeah I know it wasn't really a serious post

Capitals have thousands, possibly tens of thousands of people on board them.
It doesn't make an awful lot of sense that one person can board the ship and steal it without any effort.
I'm with this. 6,000 crew on a BS won't let it be taken lightly.
Or will they? Diplomacy skill, some marketing skill, a bribe... Interesting options.
If they are too loyal, have your own troops board and fight for it. Nothing automatic.
Then, when the ship is yours, can the hacking start to actually fly the thing...

Edited by: Janjan Jansen on 30/10/2007 20:01:18 I think the crew off any ship would prefer a pilot above no pilot, the crews would go on a strike you want to password it. They want be moved around and work hard to die in a glorious battle. They dont want to wait in the middle off nowhere, just waiting till they die off old age.

Pretty simple. Make it a hacking skill or something. % chance per minute or something like that.
in RL, ittakes skill tosteal a car, or break in and take a radio without damaging it beyond use. Why not in EVE?

That's what I was gonna suggest. There is already a hacking skill. Why don't you just use it?

Crowbar?
It's usually the lack of skills that force people into breaking and stealing...
I have crowbar trained to LVL 5, and im coming looking for you.

Ok, everybody has already said Hacking Skill. I would like to expand upon this...
1.) Hacking Skill trained to V
2.) Crowbar Skill trained to III - 5% reduction in time to hacking password per level - 5% reduction in damage done to ship while stealing it
3.) OxyBomb Skill trained to I, II, III, IV, V - depends on size of ship - This is to be used to remove the crew on the ship
4.) Crowbar Module sizes Small, Medium, Large, Capital - Well there are basically four sizes of ships. - Each size can only fit on it's size of ship - Ex: Small: Frigates Medium: Cruisers/BC/CS Large: BS Caps: Mom/Carriers/Titan - Becareful, this module can cause damage to the ship you are trying to steal.
5.) Oxybomb - can be module or ammo to be used to Erradicate the Crew
Just another idea to add to the many.

First, no, stupidiest idea ever.
Dont fly ( or leave out in space ) what you cant afford to loose.
How many people are going to be petitioning GM's because they forgot their password, or they forgot to password and someone hopped in and changed the password.
What if your drunk and change your password and completely forget what you changed it too ?
Did I mention this is a stupid idea, and wastes time they could be working on better content ? ___

It's the lack of ways to earn some money. Don't think skilled people are rich, you're wrong here. Students, artists (friends btw) and unemployed ppl are more eager to steal than the guys who put tires in boxes all day long for 10 years.
So, if you put this ingame, it should be something you get when you do not make tons of money. A cheap skill reflect that because these guys have a lot of time to loose. To the opposite, to protect your good you have to pay the price. Insurance and alarms are not cheap, and they can be fast and effective if you put some money in it.
I don't think it would be so much of an isk sink. If "alarms" are more than say 10% of a ship, nobody would take them. A second insurance vs stealing issues, maybe ? Something like that ? 2isk

Yea but most thieves nowadays dont try and steal 1km long spaceships. I support this logical idea, password protected ships would make sence and having hacking skills would be a way of wiping the Password making the ship very grabable.

No brainer.
Allow the use of salvage modules on unmanned ships to strip components of course!

For instance if you eject from your ship at a POS, place a password on it and if someone tries to board it they will need the password to get in to it.
Just an idea.
What ship did they take, exactly?

Edited by: Thorion Mortisfilius on 31/10/2007 06:31:29 Don't get me wrong, I like the idea. Being the Devil's Advocate (or Dev's Advocate, if you will). I see too much chance of exploits here if allowed out of POS. Like a miner jumping back & forth in his indy until it gets its belly full and I imagine people with greater imaginations than me could come up with many scenarios like baiting people in a frigate and attacking them in a battlecruiser you had hidden behind that last nebula.

I worked with a crime prevention charity for a while fitting locks and chains and inspecting homes to advise people on how to secure their property and you would not believe the ingenuity of the some of the methods common thieves and burglars have come up with.

then give us the ability to break in and steal the jump drive. that would make for some sure fun when the pilot comes back to find a big gaping whole where it should have been. ----------------------------------------------- Don't think of it as dying, Think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush |

I think locing up and then finding all of your cargo and fitting gone would almost be more painful to find :D
you could even make it possible to steal form ships in POS shields. if they are lucky, a little... metal gear solid in space :P ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |
