...which brings me back to my old gripe about secure cans adn abandoned ships
i COMPLETLY agree on the cans i mine in .5 sometimes and i see BILLIONS of cans that are not used anymore (some dating back 3+ years) i know they bought it to be secure but... wth i SERIOUSLY doubt after 1 month that they care about that can anymore..
not entirely true. i have cans all over the space in safespots, holding my ammo. So. make secure cans hackable after fixed period of nonusage. If someone as much as opens the can, it's usage and hacking timer resets. After... say... 30 or 60 days, they become hackable (and marked as hackable on overview). What'ca think?
I'm mean about such things, but 30-60 days is too long for me.
I'd prolly be less critical about things in safe spots, but stuff anywhere near a celestial object should be cleaned up if not used after only a few days. Gives everyone else a chance, cuts out lag and encourages people to clean up after themselves - I would imagine a large % of the cans out there are ones that people have left and couldn't be bothered to go back for. --------------------------------------------

Actually, it's the lack of alternate means of procuring currency, or the lack of "driving force" to do as the rest of the community.

Password-protecting a ship would make it impossible to steal... and EVE is supposed to be harsher than real life. How would you suggest we tackle that angle?
hmm..
a) Make the password *****able on a flat chance and a cycle of testing choosen for balance, so that they are *****able but not on the go.
b) Send an eve-mail to the ships owner if an *****ing attempt fails.
c) Introduce the hacking skill as variable in the *****ing process.
d) Make the passwords short enough that they *could* be *****ed by manual brute force *coughs* for the manics around..
e) Introduce theft | antitheft modules *grins*.

At first, I didn't think much of the op's idea, but after thinking about it a bit, I'm really on board. We can password protect containers, but not ships? Ships made with super-advanced technology and filled with crewmembers. Why would that be? I'd add this, but for game purposes only for use in POS, while the POS is online (I hate litter too).

At a POS (Player Operated Station) there is not really any way to dock your ship without leaving it available for anyone (that can get in past the shields) to simply take it away. So if you, for example are out at a POS far from any regular stations, you might want to be able to play Eve with more than 1 ship, but you can never truly, safely dock them as things stand right now.

Prob been suggested ...
Hacking skills - the better the skill, the more stuff you can unlock. With low skills perhaps the player can nab a few modules or rig parts, leaving the ship damaged. At better skills the player can take the entire ship.

Heres an idea to solve the trash problem.
For items left unattended in space, cans and ships.
After every downtime the object takes a 10% hit to its armor then the hull. I.e. 20 days.
Once the object is out of hull it either pops if its a can or it turns into a wreck if its a ship, the wreck ofcourse is scanable. Then the wreck dies from the next down time.

only works in the sheilds so people who eject in space can still lose there stuff.
nobody stole my ship, it was just an idea.

Never mind locking/hacking skills, how about boarding skills. Very easy with a little time and some skills to board an unmanned vessel. Harder but possible with a ship locked down by a gang with boarding modules fitted.
You take their cap to 10%, speed to less than x m/s and to 1/2 hull and you can activate your 1k range high slot boarding module, timer bars run, you have to keep the ship pinned down without blowing it up accidentally, but if you do succeed the pilot is forced to eject in his pod.
Now that would make piracy and PVP fun! One thing to blow them up, even better to take their stuff

Make the moduals stealable for example you steal a high slot item you can steal the next mid slot that was "under" the high slot and so on and so forth. Other wise I think passwording your ship could be a good idea. ADHD + Dyslexia = BAD SPELLING Proud to be in the FNA and not be a alt! Meow Mix! Bacon! DOOM!
