I checked 4 the DX...and i have Directx9.0B installed. So far I figured out, that all games including 3DMarks work. So....when i start eve, the screen flickers in 5sec interval and i can hear the "intro music". The intor... login animation is deformed. I waited 5-10 minutes and eve reported that in the system cache were files that were unreadable.... and there realy were files, that were named with strange symbols. I reinstaled the game in a diferent directory and ran the loger... and with the first start came the files again. The loger reposted some errors, but i couldnt store them.... the system crashed.

I tried reinstalling to a new location and still same problem. All other games work fine and i dont want to have to format just to get eve to work
Any1 got any other solutions?

Edited by: Scorpyn on 09/03/2004 11:38:16 Edited by: Scorpyn on 09/03/2004 11:29:02 One thing many ppl don't do is update the drivers to the motherboard chipset. These include drivers for AGP, so it might make things more stable.
VIA Chipset (download the Hyperion 4in1 Drivers) nForce chipset (platform/nforce drivers -> unified driver -> your os)
If these don't work, install the ones from your motherboard manufacturer. Visit their homepage and download from there, don't install the ones on the CD as they always are old.
Another thing to remember is to always uninstall the old drivers prior to installing new ones. If you have drivers for your old gfxcard laying around, uninstall if possible (add/remove programs).
I got my drivers for my ASUS Radeon 9800PRO from the official ATI site here. Seems to work fine There are also ATI drivers available from Omegacorner.com
If you still have problems, turn off AGP fastwrite, as that causes problems in some cases, and make sure the components don't get overheated. If that doesn't help, remove all overclocking and try underclocking. In some cases, a memory module might be broken - there is a memory testing program at http://memtest86.com/ that might help.
I noticed that I couldn't start EVE when removing some memory. I usually run EVE with 512MB ram, but in this case I tried it with 256MB and it wouldn't start.
Edit : Forgot an important one... it's already mentioned previously in this thread, but install the latest version of DirectX.
Edit2 : Also make sure that all drivers to other stuff in your computer are ok. Try disabling the built-in soundcard on your motherboard (in bios), as that will cause problems in some cases. Flashing your bios might help, but I don't recommend it if you had to read this post as you'll be unable to use your computer at all if you do it incorrectly (like one of my friends who flashed his laptop with the wrong bios - he now has a laptop that is completely useless unless he sends it away and gets it flashed, which'll cost a lot of money).

Thanks for reminding me, I'd completely forgotten about these drivers. My system runs fine atm, so updating them might be tempting fate in my case. I'll download them anyway and keep them to one side (nvidia).

Well I tried all the above. I just dont knwo where to turn off fastwrite (does the radeon 9000 have this feature? if so where can i find it?)
I still cannot start up EVE. I have VPU recover turned off at the moment so now when i start i get a device ailure error and the display is in 4bit mode and very low resolution. However i can still hear the music in the background. I can only get back to normal through a restart.
I've also tried running it in different compatabilty modes (95, 98, 2000) but this hasmnt had any effect.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 09/03/2004 19:32:50 The setting for fastwrite is in bios and in the SMARTGART(tm) tab (very close to the VPU Recover tab).
Maybe you've set a too high resolution or something?

Edited by: Eisha on 10/03/2004 07:26:14 Edited by: Eisha on 10/03/2004 06:57:13 I'm haveing this same problem now. The game starts, and once I get in game, just after the login it reboots. I was getting in station and not crashing tell I tried to undock. now that I'm undoced I'm lucky to get a flicker of my ship before it roboots.
The problem started a coupla days ago with no new istallaions or anything I can think of be a factore. I played fine the one day and the next it started rebooting.
I had an ATI Radion 8500, I upgraded, (after the problem started) to an ATI Radion 9600SE. I downloaded the newest drivers, rolled them back, uninstalled and reinstalled, I ran memry tests, I even monitored the CPU temp up to reboot.
When I submit the problem report to MS it points out the Graphic driver as the problem. Every now and then I get the VPU REcovery reset error. :( The only other thing I can think of is to replace the mother board. I was hoping to go another year at least before I had to do that.
System Atholon 1.8G 1 gig SDRAM Windows XP Profesional ATI Radion 9600 SE
PS: Log server does me no good since it doesn't save anything b4 the reboot. :(

thats a different problem to what is being duscussed in this thread. We cant actually get to the login screen...
Update: I have now formatted and reinstalled windows, updated everything and EVE still does not work. Before I installed drivers etc I installed EVE and tried ot run it but after the screen with the armageddon another eve opens in the system tray but does nothing, even when i clicked it. Now, after all drivers are installed, My screen just turns off and stays off as if it were on stand by...
Any found anything that may sort out this problem yet?

Edited by: Scorpyn on 10/03/2004 14:49:37 Tell me as much about your computer as you know. The most important:
* Graphics card - exact model name and vendor * Motherboard - exact model name and vendor * Memory - What type, what speed and how much? (exact model name and vendor would be nice) * CPU - AMD/Intel? What speed? What type of AMD/Intel? What FSB?
If it's a Dell or Compaq or similar, what model number?
Disable sound (#6 here) and see if that helps...

Edited by: Scorpyn on 10/03/2004 16:10:10 Is the memory one or more modules?
Is the cpu a Thunderbird/Barton/other? (probably not important)

Im not sure about CPU. but that really makes no difference.
I hav 1 512mb DDR333 module in at the moment. I have 2 more 256mb DDR266 which i use some times.
Personally i think there is some compatability problem with the radeon 9000 as most of the people with the problem have them.

Very possible...
Try these drivers for the gfx card.
If it's Barton, a bios update might help (make sure that I didn't pick the wrong bios here, as it will make your computer useless if you flash with the wrong bios).
Also try these drivers for your motherboard...

Yeah I know, it'd be VERY weird if the bios fixed it, and it's very weird that eve won't run. Try a bug report. Include a file from the logserver, dxdiag info and so on...
Also try adding advancedDevice=1 to prefs.ini in the cache folder, it'll bring up some more graphics options if you get that far...

I would say your problem may lie in that you UPGRADED from 98 to 2000 pro. This can make your computer run a lot less desirable than it could be running. The only upgrade i would say is an ok upgrade nowadays is from 2k to XP...pro. I highly recommend you do a clean install of 2000. This may or may not resolve your problem, but i can garauntee a smoother ride in the long run.

Maybe it's just me but when I write "upgrade" when talking about Windows I mean a full reinstall (including formatting the HDD).
If this is not the case here, I highly recommend it, even if it won't make the game run better.

I hope they catch onto what the problem is and put a fix out

well I removed my graphics drivers and installed the latest drivers released on wednesday (10th) And i no longer get a device failure or VPU recover message, but the screen still flickers on and off. I can see a picture with EVE written in large letters with second genesis or osmething underneath. After the screen goes off and comes back on the EVE has rotated slightly (as if the screen going on and off is one frame). I believe this is the background of the EULA, but on my screen this is not displayed.
This is very annoying!
