Not the most well put together of articles, but I do agree alot with what your saying.
Also if one more person says something about him leaving EVE you should be sent back to that Special Education class you obviously barely graduated from. Read the whole post before you start bashing on it or making unnessicary comments.

Edited by: Dani Leone on 07/11/2007 12:04:49 Edited by: Dani Leone on 07/11/2007 12:03:55 From Hello Kitty Online World:
Quote:
Hello Kitty and friends welcome you to the exciting and fantastic Hello Kitty World! This is the first-ever online game platform featuring the all-time-favorite Hello Kitty characters from Sanrio!
Hello Kitty World will allow thousands of players to live and participate in Hello Kitty's magical and cute online world. You will be able to roam the streets of Kitty Kingdom, XO Federation, and Melody-land. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and architecture of Puroland or Badtzcity and participate in numerous puzzles, story lines, or adventures lead by the worldwide community of Hello Kitty World subscribers. You can even have a successful career, open different shops, earn and spend Sanrio Dollars in your bank, buy a house, and trade with other players around the vast game world.
...
Players may purchase land and structure to build their own house after having sufficient money.
Once you have purchased a house, you will have the key to your house, and only the Player with the key have access to the house. You can customize it by acquiring new furnitures, and decorate it anyway you like. As the Player advances, there will be more options to purchase more expensive items for the home, or to expand your house.
Wow, that actually sounds quite exciting doesn't it? (roflmfao)
Seriously, yes the devs are going to far, and yes a lot of the changes flat out suck (unlike Nos anymore).
You are right imho. Until Eve gets some serious competition to force a sharpening of certain developer minds then we can expect a whole load of bloat creeping in and lazy nerfs because lets face it those of us who are eve junkies can't exactly go elsewhere for our fix.
Mo'Moon, evolution is normally taken to mean progression, but not always, I know. That's why I am training Minnie and (shock horror) Amarr as an insurance policy against Gallente being nerfed into dust, (which looks most likely).
Anyway maybe the changes will turn out for the best, but on previous form I expect that they simply result in further nerfs for 'balance' made on a regular basis and justified by saying that now that X module has been nerfed Y module is overpowered or (heaven forfend) has become a FOTM.

I agree with the sole point of competition would be good, it may spur CCP on get away from the grind aspects of the game and make playing eve a tad more enjoyable.
As eve goes, the basis for a lot of the stuff is good, but I think they went down the wrong alley somewhere by coming up with the idea time sinks injected into most areas of eve are good.
That kinda gets onto a whole new topics of current game design in the mmo world, playing styles, what the consumer pays for, in game economics, effort and reward etc.
What the mmo REALLY needs is a game style without grind, where you can play a good challenging game, where your actions are derived from necessity, not the love of money or having to grind to the next level.

Would that still satisfy the base condition of being a CRPG though, rather than a FPS or a RTS? The constant improving of abilities is a key aspect that distinguishes CRPG's from other game types. Doing things out of tactical necessity sounds more like a strategy game than a RPG.
Not that i say that such a game wouldn't be enjoyable, i just want to point out that that game would by definition occupy a different genre.

OP: Good post(s). This is what I'm talking about when I keep saying this:
[ 2007.11.07 10:53:05 ] (combat) CCP's Lack of Perspective Cannon perfectly strike's CCP's foot, wrecking for 982342349.34 USD.
They need posts like this and some of mine to make sure they're aware that everything is not hunky dory. The rabid fanbois at FanFest and those flaming anyone who dares to criticize the game or CCP are not indicitive of the entire player base. Many players are pretty ****ed off at where things seem to be headed. Trivial new feature after uninteresting new feature instead of fixing things that have been indisputably broken for ******* years. Sadly most players that actually quit do not go out in a blaze of forum drama to the tune of "Can I have your stuff?" posts. Most of them do it quietly, so unless you're doing a "select count(*) from accounts where active = 1;" you're probably not aware of them even leaving. And if they're quitting they're usually angry or apathetic so they're probably not likely to give any feedback.
So it's up to players like me and the OP to try and help them regain perspective and express differing opinions. It makes me shake my head that anyone who does this typically just gets flamed and ridiculed.
I say this because I care. I do not play any other MMOs. I do not want to go back to WoW. I am not quitting. No you cannot have my stuff. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes

After playing wow for about two years i have experienced frequent server instabilities over the period of weeks after patches. Especially after the launch of BC. My guild cancelled raids for several weeks after certain patches because the server instabilities with massive lagspikes, disconnects etc made raiding practically impossible.
Besides that there is no other game with a server like EVE has.

I keep reading about all these amazing features that were never introduced, environments, factional warfare, a working stock market. All dated back in 2003. And you know what? for a game that's been around for what 5 years, it's done rather well, but honestly, development for this game is unbearably slow, so slow that balance changes... we're talking about basic, game play, changes, takes years, and tends to have an unplanned aura to them.
There are plenty of features announced while wow was in beta that is still not implemented. And that is from one of the biggest game companies in the world. Not a small company that ccp is (was). You see this in every mmo.
But sure competition is good.

Seems like you never ever played Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142. LOTS of promised but never realised things. 2 free new Maps the rest has to be payed for (Booster Packs and the Special Forces Add-On).
Adding to this you almost get new bugs after each patch, massive gameplay changes (above the obvious "kill all the reds"), glitching problems and a non-functional anti-Cheat Software. Imagine a Velator instakilling your HAC ....then you know what i mean.
Yeah i know that the Battlefield Series is not a mmorpg...but its an mainly online oriented game.
As far as i can judge CCP does much a better job on listening to their customers then many other game-companies out there.
Quote: This feels like the honest direction EVE is headed and I'm not a big fan, it's not about the gameplay it's about attracting numbers. Getting subscriptions, holding the......
It might surprise you, but CCP is running a business. And yes, stacking up on paying customers is what they are looking for. Hell....they are not the salvation army. But i agree with you if you say that keeping customers with a functional gameplay is as important as getting new ones into the game !

Can't compare eve imho to standard enterprise software on some server.
If I'd be involved in developing a really complex piece of software, an inhouse solution, that gets changed a lot and that's supposed to run on a complex hardware like this cluster and I couldn't test, how it behaves on that system, before the customers use it, then I'd also cross my fingers after each patch and pray that everything works as planned, but I wouldn't bet on it.

No i'm not leaving.
Did you actualy read his well constructed post, or was your intention only to troll and flame the poster?
While i agree on serveral issues, there's one or two i feel are a little out of whack.
Certainly development, things evolve allright... you can't concrete anything in stone and wonder why it isn't here 5 years down the line and take it as straight forward as a broken promise.
Iv'e seen too many of their ideas change.. largely for the better it has to be said... old enough to remember things such as mobile refinerys as a simple example... very simplistic idea.. some sort of rig in a belt (i think there was a screenshot of it)... 4 years down the line.. we have pos's... refinerys at outposts.. compression... and ofc the whole supply chain that go's with it.
Thats just a small little thing... but my take is while you work it over time for yourself, it certainly would be wise (if ccp are to be taken at face value) to explain the various changes in direction... say well we thought about that.. had an idea.. and another.. we came up with this... rather than just dump x and give us y without explanation which leads to a whole lot of frustrated people..
Anyhow.. there's one or two in your post i fully agree with.. the training issue's, iv'e made my voice clear on that in another thread... while it's totaly acceptable to bring in skill tree's to expand and balance, aka missiles, ew, certain ship classes.... i find a lot of the expanded training for's as being nothing more than stretchers designed to keep your sub active.... glad somebody else has finaly seen that one tbh.
Alt's are a killer... but there's not much you can do about that.. brick and wall spring to mind..... but it would be nice if they were all flagged to show the owner... but ofc that wouldn't be in ccp's interest either
As for ambulation... well.... mixed bag mate.. there obviously doing other things with the tech anyway.. if they want to try and bolt it on to eve... i don't have a problem... it only enhances the game at zero cost to me.. and for sure it's a ten fold improvement over the age old character design as is.
You know... if there using that to grab in players then fair play.. it sure beats adding timesinks, longer training, promoting and changing the game to appeal for more alt's to be created.
Take your pick. ______

Expendable mate.
I think just about everybody voted with there feet on that one, judging from what i saw from forum mob anyhow.
Tbh it's not even something iv'e even looked at.... i don't play that game anyway, but it's nothing less than common sense that combinations work around just about anything they add like that anyway.
It's an expansive enhancement to the game all the same though.. i spose they have to tie it to the skills tree, but balanced or not... probaly not imho... the high numbers exclude too many people... for something as simple as, thats fairly unwise.

I know several people, who don't play anymore, but keep paying and training, in case they come back. The beauty of eve's skillsystem, also for CCPs wallet. In other games, not playing = no training, so not really a reason to stay subscribed, while you are away. I'm still running 4 accounts, although I haven't played during the last 3 weeks I think. I just logged in, talked 5 minutes to my clan mates and logged out again. I'm not happy with the current state of alliance pvp and how things are in 0.0 and have also noreal motivation to grind isk, if I don't enjoy pvp currently.
So hmm, guess I pay CCP 60 EUR a months for the forums and being able to change skills. Funny ... or better stupid.
If I knew that I'll never get really active in EVE again, it was easy, accounts canceled, but I don't, so I keep training.
Like I said, I have a few more people in my corp, who didn't play for more than maybe 5 hours during the last half year or year in total due to reallife, but they still pay for the skill training. --------------------------------------------- *snip* |

I like the idea of corporate meetings, discussion rooms etc. and perhaps gritty bars.
But the accessorizing nonsense has to stay out of it. This isn't Barbie Doll Online. We're all members of an elite subsociety with our own agendas on our minds. We're not the common public. And we don't need more than one suit.

Try:

- Funcom (be VERY glad you didn't play Anarchy online the first half year)
- EA Games (who ran Earth & Beyond in the ground after it was published with less than half the promised features)

What company has not had serious release troubles with their MMOGs?
Oh! And your suggestion that WoW never suffered from day long downtime. CLASSIC! Used to happen on ocasion before TBC came out.
Please do some research before making bold statements. The facts are in complete conflict with your opinion.
I'll give you this to the title, CCP could some more competition. If only because there are way too few space games out anymore.
ROFL. Anarchy Online. Great game, HORRIBLE release. I believe it was the most bug-ridden MMO release in history, and it was quite nearly unplayable for the first WEEK after release. (This is not an exaggeration. I had just bought the game and then I couldn't play it... fkn BS)
