Originally by: Lorelei Lee Updating the overview is strictly a client-side feature, right?
Yup, there is a local simulator in the client that is "pushed" by the server. The local simulator will also be decoupled from the overview/gui in that not everything that happens in the simulation has to immediately be updated in the overview. This can be observed, for example, by the lag between the status in 3D view and the overview and the targeted ship, each one takes a bit longer to be updated.
So that puts at least two asynchronous boundaries between the server and the overview.
Quote: In order to implement this suggestion, they wouldn't need to send the news of Ctrl being pressed to the server and wait for reaction -- RIGHT?
Correct. Locking the list order would be entirely local to the client.

Great idea, no drawbacks, fully endorsed. --- Using a "real life" comparison to prove a point about anything EVE only hints at a serious lack of perspective. Hint: We're not really flying spaceships. |

Originally by: Tsanse Kinske First off, there is a skill element to targeting the right ships that wouldn't be present with a frozen overview. Second, I basically like the idea that the overview doesn't give you perfect control over targeting, allowing for, uh, unexpected results.
I know what you mean, about the skill involved and the unexpected consequences of lack of said skill. However, I think it's the wrong skill for this game: it's a twitch skill, and would be much better suited to twitch-centric games like FPSes, or possibly JumpGate.

One of the best suggestions I read here. Simple and very usefull.
Lots of people were concordokkened because of this before they made it possible to filter out neutrals from overview but this nasty problem is still here.

Nah, using the ctrl key for fast targeting becomes natural very quickly in Eve. And if one is prone to leaning on ctrl atm then one is prolly already making big concording mistakes.

This is an RPG, not an FPS. You shouldn't have to have ultra-fast reflexes to hit a moving target (the moving target being the item in the overview).

I use all the of the options of sorting depending on whats going on, and it doesn't matter if its icon or name or distance. It not only shuffles it but if the enemy icons are on top, it will shuffle large collidable objects up top and then change it again with in a few seconds. WTF is up with that, and if you do have names selected it still shuffles it.
I had the idea that a key can lock the overview and it can still update but nothing would move, and as you suggested new items would be added to the bottom, the only difference is that mine would be toggled. There needs to be a change.

Hey this is a good idea.
..why hasn't some a**hole complained about it yet? lol. Surely there's someone who thinks this idea will help macro miners or detract from their pseudo-intellectual superiority derived from mastering a horrible UI.

To be honest, EVE is a good game - but I play it for what it could be, not for what it is. I really do hope the devs add in things like the idea proposed in this thread before my account is due for renewal.
