Hi Guys! One of the things I like about EVE (just started) are its huge environments, I mean one solar system can be a hundred or more AU wide, which is a lot of ground for people to try and cover when fighting/mining/doing missions/exploring in general. Right now IÆve been trying mining (I choose the mining career so IÆm not good at fighting) but IÆve been on the forums some and have an idea for you guys.
Space is really big and cool, especially the massive nebulas in the background, but it still seems a bit too empty and coldàreally cold in fact (from the fan fiction and chronicles)! IÆve heard people talk about ôtactical environmentsö before and I have a suggestion that has to do with them.
TACTICAL ENVIRONMENTS û COLD SPACE Well we all hear about space being cold and stuff, but none of this ever actually effects us unless we get thrown out of an airlock, right? I think that this should change...specifically, that the areas of space near stars should be warmer than the areas of space far awat from stars. Why do you ask? Well, cold water negatively affected the Titanic by making its steel armor less effective û why shuldnÆt we do the same thing for EVE? This outer space thatÆs far away from the stars should be so cold that it actually damages ships armor and hull (sorry Caldari, but there are way too many of you anyway). That way it gives people something to think about when youÆre just warping around and going from place to place. But obviously there should be some way to effect it if itÆs in the game, right?
BOOSTING AMARR We all know that Amarr use lasers but they arenÆt very good because they use a lot of cap and do too much EM damage. Well theres another way that these weapons could be usedàlasers (thermal damage + radiation) could be used to warm up space and make it less hazardous.
WARMING SPACE Amarrs could use their lasers to warm space! Think of it as mining except without getting ore at the end of the cycle, but making it so colder space warms up and has less of a chance to harm ships traveling through it. Even if lasers arenÆt good for PvP they can be useful, and in big battles lasers can be used to make space warmer for a friendly fleet so the enemy fleet gets damaged more by the coldness of space. They could do the same thing in empire and charge people to travel through the space theyÆve warmed in advance for travelers.
LASER BOMBS Amarrs could also have special ôlaser bombsö that would have the same warming effect for all the space around them, and at the same time make lasers more effective (warmer space = more thermal damage on lasers right?). It could be used just like the bombs on stealth bombers are used now.
What do you think about these ideas?

Let me get this straight, already amarr are the underdog race in eve. Needing LOTS of skills and SPs to become proficient in combat, and YOU want to demote them to being warmers of space!!!
Freaking amarr - we are the space radiators...
You must be some sort of caldari virus or something

Let me be the first to tell you why this is a dumb idea.
Space isnt cold, just as it isnt warm, there is simply a lack of matter and since temperature is the movement of molecules and atoms around their own axis there is no temperature. For this reason you cant warm space unless you pour an atmosphere in there first, which is impossible due to the same vacuum.
Space closer to a star isnt warmer either, the only reason something gets warmer when it gets closer to the a star is radiation hitting matter and creating thermal energy.
All in all this idea is interesting but based on a poor understanding of space and vacuum.

First of all: lol
Secondly: As was already posted, you can't warm vacuum. There is nothing there to warm up in the first place.

Exactly.
I was so looking forward to the "heat" stuff until I heard what it actually was. Can you imagine if the game had bee setup to treat heat realistically? Do too much work, activate too many modules, and you need to dump heat, making you much easier to lock and track. Turn everything off, and emit almost no heat, and be hard to lock and track. Heat sink modules that were actually heat sinks, and not just laser damage mods.
It could have been cool. Oh, well.

Thats not entirely accurate, while your right space cannot be warmed, it can absorb the energy from a warm object..... as such it is almost a limitless heat-sink, however, light and other similar forms of radiation are very efficient at warming in a vaccum.

Space is a very very poor heatsink, thermal energy dosnt transfer well between matter and vacuum, it will certainly bleed off, but a warm object thrown into a vacuum wont freeze instantly or anywhere close to it, it will take a good deal of time for the thermal energy to bleed into the vacuum.
Space dosnt absorb the energy either, the energy will radiate out from the source until the hit something else which it will in turn heat up.
Also, if you read my post you will see I do already mention the fact that radiation can heat objects in space.
It is irrelevant though and I dont see where in my post you see me claiming thermal energy wont bleed into space.
I am going to suggest you reread my post and I am certain you will find that I never claimed anything of what you want to correct me for.

That's not really true. The only way you can lose heat in space is by it radiating away, and that's the least efficient way of losing heat. Things do not cool as easily in space as they do in an atmosphere.
And in either case, space itself can't be heated, because (again) there is nothing there to heat.

We sent out the Voyager probe ages ago.. And its leaving our solar system now. Its hull isnt gonna break because its too cold lol. So why would a starship built by human decendants 3000 years more advanced be less durable than the tiny Voyager? Answer me that :)
