Its not all that long ago I was a total noob so I always try to help with advice or if they are stuck with a mission I will jump in a cheap ship and help out if I'm not in the middle of doing something.

i love helping out new players. but it can get a bit frustrating sometimes as the terminology is a bit much like they get confused between power grid and cap. but most the time it is just get a ship and go have fun.

I'd talk for a few minutes. Then refer him to the forums if he's got any more questions. A lot of new players don't know that they can get all kinds of information if only they visit the forum and utilize its search function.

But the search function is horrible. Point em at eve-search.
I tend to help out as much as I can with questions I can answer (i.e. I'm still new myself so giving the wrong answers is probably worse than giving no answers). I'll even chuck a bit of ISK at people who don't ask for it and are asking smart questions (it's not an investment otherwise).
I will also forward useful URLs and such.
It's not that bad for new players. Depending on the noob corp you've joined (some seem wildly better than others for this) you've probably got a fair supply of older players on hand to answer questions ranging from the basic to the very technical. I've seen three noob corps so far and the War Academies seem to be the best for this.
People are really fairly helpful.
OFC all that said I'd have probably quit in about a week if I hadn't had cash from a friend for learning skills. That's probably one of the most obnoxious facets of the new player game.
The other big issue is the lack of clear progression for new players. It's like... make character, possibly work out how to do tut and then what?
Seems like an inherent weakness of sand-box design.

I've worked to train up a few newbs in my time. I don't just teach how to fight/mine/survive, but how to look things up and learn the game constantly. Some of the newbs....never signed up for a full account, sadly. (some showed real promise) For those that do step up to the challenges, I try not to let my new corpies falter too badly while still learning.
Why do I train newbs? Self-Interest. If my new little corpies decide to go smack-talk a few Goons while taking a few pot-shots at Veto/Repo/BoB/whatever ....that's gonna cost me more than just a little time and work.
As for providing money/materials....I'll cheerfully outfit my corpies, so long as they're willing to learn and occasionally help out corp activities. If a total noob wants to ask "How I mine fish"-type questions repeatedly and asks for money....well, let's just say that I'll find some way to pass him a few rounds of ammo without getting blasted myself. _______________________________

I NEVER give a new player the cold shoulder, when I'm solicited for advice.
I also have a fun tradition that I carry out every day, once per day at the time that I log out.
I pick a random new player(I study them for a few min to see if they are really new)and stuff their wallet with 100k of ISK
I get a THX you e-mail in a 1 in 10 ratio.
I have done this in every MMO I have played for the last 5 years....Good fun

He probably saw your name "Sheriff Jones" and figured you were some sort of game master or something.
I haven't done the tutorial in over a year so I don't know how it's changed, but back then at least it was very helpful and it helped me make just enough isk to buy something other than the godawful noobship. Though it did take me half an hour to figure out how to undock the first time
I try to help newbies if they sound lost and I'm not just passing through. When someone starts asking noob questions and it's very clear they didn't do the tutorial, I tell them to stfu and go do it (but nicer than that).
One guy (less than a day old) nearly stole something out of a rat wreck one day, then warped off. Then he convos me and is scared to death because of the "you are about to steal yada yada" warning. He thought I was going to hunt him down and vaporize him or something. Spent the next hour explaining stuff and ended up sending him ISK for a Tristan because he'd spent all of his buying a Navitas to go kill "pirates" (rats).

It depends on how I'm approached and if that character's name is 'stupid' or not, but yeah I'd help. From time to time I make a 14 day trial account, make a char and answer questions in rookie channel, helps me wind down and chill out heh.

Edited by: Karen Serasia on 09/11/2007 11:10:09 Since I've making a new account I get asked for help less (since I'm still at trial age) but I tend to sit around in EvE uni public channel and have my CSPA set at 0 isk for the point of helping if anyone asks me.
They must have done the tutorial first however and not ask for money, those are my only conditions as I prefer to only help people that have tried to help themselves in the first place.

I always help out noobies, you never know when one might turn out to be an asset to you in the future. We all started out asking dumb questions, mostly to strangers, due to the awesome ****up that is rookie chat.
Sometime thou you get one who just isn't listening to what you say. Like the noobie i watched get pwned by an ore thief last night, despite my specific warning not to take his stuff back from the can that had been dropped. I guess nothing teaches a lesson better than a practical demonstration.

I used to help people a lot more than I do now.
One time I bought a hauler for a newbie that expressed an interest in being a trader. Now I can't get rid of her, I call her my Logistics Director now.
Then I was in Duriblepants and there was a newbie not understanding the game, so I took him under my wing and we did some missions together. He was a role player and I learned a lot about role play so it benefitted me too.
I still have an alt in a starter corp and will use her to organise mining ops. It opens the new players eyes to how far they have to travel in Eve when they see how effective a high level character is.
But the rise of the idiots has made me much more likely to ignore a convo. Recently some idiot asked if I could power level them!

I might cut him lose after the "reading about the game takes up my entire trial i dont want to do that" reply (doesn't sound like the kind of person who would be committed enough to stay around after his free game was up), but other than that i would help with any advice i could provide (but clearly draw the line at advice only. I never just give ISK or stuff to people i don't know a thing about).

Rather a misquote there, as he said that it would take up the time of his trial(to play, train those, etc etc).
He wasn't saying "I dun wanna read it takes time."

It would really depend on my mood and what I was doing at the time. I like to help new players (but not with ISK. I'm really stingy with that) but if I'm rushing as fast as I can back to 0.0 space to kill something then I don't really have time to sit and explain stuff to someone.
That's probably why I tend to just use the forums to help people instead, because then I have time.

I tend to help them out, invite them to the eve-uni channel and tell them to ask stuff there or point them to other resources.
till they start asking for isk ... at that point I invite them to join on a lvl4 mission in low-sec, only to pod them and give them the last word of advice that begging and having trust in strangers is not the way forworth in eve.

simple words..no CSPA,and love giving advise even if i still feel like a noob my self

It all depends:
First, on whether I'm busy or not. If I'm doing a L4 or in PVP or trying to do anything that requires active participation, I may apologize and say I'm too busy but offer to talk to them later.
Secondly, if they are impolite or obviously developmentally challenged, I may tire of the convo quickly and beg an exit.
And finally, if they ask for money, then I'd be kinda put off. It is one thing to ask for money in n00b corp chat or in help channels, but it is another to go around convo'ing people for a private begging session :)
Beyond that, I don't mind (and frequently am) helping newer players our or just generally answering the questions I know the answers to. ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! So it ends with their butts and it starts with your shoe! - Awesome Car Fun Maker |
