First, let's set it up(paraphrasing, no log):
So there i am, doing my usual EVE routine, flying about, making things go pop, or in lesser extent pof, and behold, a message appears from nowhere "xxxxxxx(not naming) wants to start a conversation".
Righto, press ok, conversation starts and he begins with:
"Hi there."
At this moment i check the info, as per usual when someone i dont' know calls on "ze phone". Less then day old. Starter corporation, obviously and no bio.
Righto.
"Ello" i say, in a rather nice and fuzzy way, while killing rats and making stuff happen.
So, he proceeds in asking "Could you tell me what i can do in the game?"
I proceed in telling him to do the tutorial, check the new citizens Q&A and that it should answer the basic questions and help him more then just me repeating stuff from 2003 and making my own assumptions/opinions.
He thanks and adds "What should i do to do combat?"
I tell him to train weapons(his race ofcourse), ships, frigates first, maybe cruiser after(personal opinion) and say that with that and the New Cit. Q&A, not to mention tutorial, he'll notice a week or two have flown by.
He mentiones he's on a trial and that'd take about his trial time.
Switch gears, tell him to go mining, do missions, lark about, try all kinds of stuff(as he can find from the Q&A), you know, the usual advice how to use a trial account to learn if and what he likes. Also tell him that if he wants to go player hunting straight up, the guns+ships route would probably take him there fast enough.
He tells thanks and byes. I tell good lucks and byes.
End conversation.
This all took me about 10 minutes of my time, while doing my usual chores.
The reason i ask this is simple. How many of you would've cut the cord at the first step? Meaning the conversation pop-up. How many have insane amounts of isk to pay for conversations? How many after noticing he's only one day old?
I'm thinking i wasn't the first one he asked as he added "You don't have to help..." at the very beginning. And at the end thanked me alot for ACTUALLY answering.
Just seems that more and more, people aren't that interested in helping new people, and that my friends, is the biggest nerf we should worry about.

i would defeinitely help, however me being in tech support, that frustrates the hell out of me that he obviously didnt do the tutorial and read about the game... just as bad as when a customer asks to do such and such and it states plainly how to do it in the manual, so they run out of warranty and pay $50 for me to tell them to goto page 8 in the manual.. but hey... my customers are Americans..what can i say?

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 08/11/2007 22:57:05 I think there's a problem with EVE aswell there, if someone has to ask and is happy when someone sayes "do tutorial"
really should reprocess one of my characters, or take a trial, and see how the beginning goes these days.
I'm just thinking, as it's no big priority to old podders, that it could use some old eyes to judge it.

Edited by: Larg Kellein on 08/11/2007 22:54:01 If I'm not doing anything that requires my full attention, I'll help out in situations like that (also hang out in the help channel quite often in those situations). I have to admit that refusing to do the tutorial would probably have me telling him I can't help those who won't help themselves, though.

I would help with advice as best as I can (unless I'm in the middle of combat, or I have to log off for RL stuff), and I'd probably send him a few mil to get him started (provided he doesn't ask for it).

The GMs arent interested in dealing fairly with harassment accusations and ignore you when you prove to them that there wasn't any. Why should we help newbs? The game deserves to die if the GMs don't attempt to fix their mistakes.

Edited by: QUITSHOOTINGATME on 08/11/2007 23:12:37 A good thing to do is to create a noob training corporation with an alt and then bring in as many as possible from starter systems, recruit them and answer all questions that come your way, teach them the game, and then those who really shine after awhile you can private convo them and secretly put the offer forward to move them into your real corporation, it's a good way to root out thieves and acts as an indirect service to the furthering of the eve community.
When I did this I brought in 72 members in two weeks and helped convince 51 of them to subscribe, around 30 of them moved into my corp a little while later. (posting as an alt for a reason lol)

I always assist, even though the lessons sometimes balloon into a two-hour typed class on how Eve works.
This game has a rather extreme learning curve. I believe it is very easy, after a year or more in game, to forget just what a challenge confronts a new player. These players don't know enough to join a corporation, and the Help channel is (let's face it) something of a madhouse. So they'll sometimes attempt to convo someone out of the blue (being unaware that some pilots frown upon unannounced convo requests).
[shameless plug] In an extreme case, where I don't have time to remain at the computer, I'll send them towards the Eve University public channel... the place I generally lurk off and on to help answer questions. Very nice and patient guys there who enjoy assisting new pilots. [/shameless plug]

I always help in cases like that and will spend extensive time with them as long as their questions are reasonable (i.e. I was a noob 4 years ago, things have changed and much should be answered for them by doing the tutorial...beyond that I am glad to help). When they start begging for cash is when I end the convo.

I bet your life really sucks.
I'd invite him to join our corp, let him fly with us for a bit and explain how corps work. I get taxes, he gets lessons and fun... win-win --

I'd help in the same way you did, and have done a few times over the years. It hasn't got to the point it's ever become intrusive because it doesn't happen often enough.
It's sort of the point of MMOGs to me, to be honest, otherwise they may as well play single player and just RTFM.

Doubtless anyone in this thread will be happy to answer questions. That said also try the EVE New Citizens Q&A in this forum as well as the Help channel in-game.
Not saying don't ask people here...by all means do. Just pointing you to some other options you have as well. In-game help channel it great for quickly answered questions (i.e. do not need extensive explanation). Forums are better for more complex topics.

Yep...it's sad EVE has become as unfriendly as it has.
I was grinding some L4 missions for standing purposes and couldn't be arsed to loot/salvage them. I offered the mission spot in local to anyone who wanted it to loot and was told to "feck off", "bet you'd like that you ganker nub" and a few other choice retorts.
Can't blame them given how things stand but was sad to see.

If im really bored ill take him on a level 3 mission - i'll tank ofc

Fly to a belt. Invite him to gang. Tell him to warp to me for some jetcan mining. Pod him.
Laugh hysterically for 20 seconds then move on.
Nah, one of two options:
If I had the time, I'd probably hop in a rifter, buy him whatever frig and fit he could fly and take him hunting 'til we both lose our ships (just to prove it doesn't hurt a bit). Then send him on his way with enough to buy another frig for future fun. Too bad I've rarely have that kind of time this year.
Otherwise, point him to someone who I figure would give him a few tips.

Nah...this is a notorious scam these days although a newb would be unaware. Have him in your gang, invite someone into your gang who is at war with someone else (all your ALTs or mates of course) and he becomes fair game.
Lame but some players have made a career out of this.

I'd help. Heck, I was just chatting up a newer player who was just finding their foothold in 0.0 the other night. Basic questions, some info on what to expect from spawns, and other stuff like that. Nothing major.
Ratting in a Raven is a pretty automated process, and as long as I'm relatively certain I'm not about to get boned by a roving ganksquad, I'll offer up help.
