Edited by: Ishanda on 11/11/2007 13:35:38 Edited by: Ishanda on 11/11/2007 13:31:55 Thanks for some of the ideas so far! As much as I'd like to kick everyone in the groin, unfortunately that's more likely to put them off. I'd like to use these 3 minutes as a sort of advert for EVE, while explaining what it is.
What's definitely going in (not necessarily in this order): - 1 server for everyone - Sandbox - you get out of the game what you make of it - Player driven economy - There are some things you can do which you wouldn't (normally) in Real LifeÖ (scamming, thievery, piracy, fly internet spaceships)
All of this will be accompanied by some screenshots/artwork and possibly a short video. ---

Yep do you build a great big sandcastle or are you the bully that kicks it over? Maybe you're just the kid who sits to the side and laughs at the bullies actions or are you simply that strange kid in the corner who eats all the sand.
EvE is basically what happens when you give a load of people a room, some tools, a controlled area with some basic rules and the rest of the place with none and let them do what they want.

Act I: Have a friend stand hitting a rock with a hammer. You dress up like a ninja and sneak up behind him. Then pounce on him and scream, "SUPRISE! BUTTSEX!"
Act II: Have a door with a bunch of people waiting on the other side. When you walk through they beat the crap out of you.
Act III: Have 4 people of four different races stand facing the audience and each starts whining about how their are getting discriminated against. The one declares, "This sucks! I'm out of here"! and the other 3 simultaneously ask, "Can I have your stuff?"
And that's eve.

EVE is a virtual world, with it's own economy, social structure, and acceptable norms (if at all any are left)
I think you should really concentrate on this fact. The game's economy isnt artificially driven. It is made using real player supply and demand. And rarely does CCP just throw their own items in for precise sale (except for skillbooks/shuttles) Are you varry harry??? |

This may be what others have said before but meh:
Eve online sets its self apart from other MMOs by having all subscribers play in a single, unbroken universe or "shard". Combined with high penalties for death and a sophisticated economic model, players' actions have a permanent effect on the game universe in almost everything they do, from providing another player with a sale for some weapon or ship they have made, to controlling entire solar systems and all the resources they provide or access routes through them
Unlike many other MMO's, where the emphasis is on working in a team against computer opponents, Eve online is heavily weighted to give the best resources to those who work as a team against other human players or teams. Eve culture is thus highly competitive, whether it be through competing for sales or blowing each other up.
Eve is as a result, not easy to pick up and play for a total beginner, and many Eve players like to think of themselves as "hardcore". Its complex mechanics and abstract rewards are both an attraction and turn off depending on the player. As alluded to, Eve is closer to real life than most MMOs, both in its requirement for complex human interaction to succeed and in its dark, science fiction setting. Compared to the cartoon style fantasy MMO's, it may feel more like a challenge, but less like simple escapism. Those who have spent a hard day at the office or teenagers bunking school don't want to do complex profit calculations on their latest crafted items they are trying to sell. Eve is thus a niche game.

Welcome to the new millenium. Time doesn't stand still. Besides that: America didn't do it on their own, it happened over 60 years ago and unless you have been fighting there yourself, I don't give a crap about that statement. Just because some of your ancestors made something right doesn't mean that I need to look up to you. Here's some snippets from my bio (Hitchhiker's Guide to EVE) #4: If someone can make money at your expense somehow, he will. #6: Dictate engagement range. This is half the battle #9: If it seems to good to be true, there are probably pirates in between you and it. #10: Never undock unless you are perfectly prepared for your ship to blow up the instant you do. You are never, ever perfectly safe
Also see this fun quote
[01:34:26] Shiranu Chillblood > we don't gank, we just apply force in an disproportional manner in an uneven tactical combat situation to maximize revenue

Put up an image of THIS:
http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Verite/influence.png
And then explain that it represents "player created Alliances" and the regions which are controlled by those Alliances. Explain how the game is an ongoing struggle between the various factions to retain, and gain, control of the thousands of systems... Because, in the end, This is what EVE is all about... and it can easily be compared to real world politics and business models.

I remember reading that dev said that a queue system would NEVER be even considered and that they were even regretting putting in the learning skills...
