You need stupidly high skills to get anything half-decent out of Amarr ships, I suspect the guys like myself with >40Mil SP are the few people who fly Amarr ships. Probably for nostalgia's sake, more than pew-pew potential.

Bah.. I got less than 15 mill.. And I still fly only Amarr.. Let see 2 mill in Amarr BS, 5+ mill in gunnery, 1816 in Industry.. Yup, pretty much.. á ----------------------------------------------------------- "Scav est procul Porta!!" -=Pimary=- "Tonight you dine in....BKG?" -=Ashemi Darkhold=- |

Is that 16% of chars that are amarr, or 16% of players that use/fly amarr ships?
cos the race of your char means almost nothing to anyone with over say 10m sp, aka cross race training.

Edited by: iudex on 15/11/2007 08:31:21 One of the reasons, why there are only so few amarrs is the constant amarr forum whining.
People see all that whining and think "amarr must be a bad race, as so many complain - i better don't take it" and go for something else. So whiners are not only a result of the problem, they are part of the cause. Start posting how great amarrs are and the amarr poplulation will start to increase. My skills |

Don't confuse the number of people who choose to play an Amarrian character versus the number of people that can simply fly their ships, and out of that lot, don't confuse those who can versus those who do. =)

CCP agrees that Amarr are in fact lacking. However all creative talent has been lost and they cannot think of any serious ways of improving the game or for that matter Amarr. Thus they are slowly carrying out a systematic campaign of nerfing everything else in the game until its on the same crappy level as Amarr. To me the best example of this creative failure is their utter inability to come up with any changes to the carrier save reducing the number of fighters. Then again maybe it's there inability to make POS warfare interesting or come up with a good solution to lag or move away from blobbing that exemplifies their lack of creativity. Then again, perhaps it's their new content that best shows how little they can innovate. There's heat which is virtually unused, there's ambulation which is widely denounced and there are the T2 battleships which the general sentiment seems to be are a serious disappointment. On the eve of what should be a massive expansion it seems CCP is no longer the producer of EvE but rather the maintainer of it. They do not add meaningful content but rather nerf a little here and there to keep it running along.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above does not necessarily reflect the views of my corporation, alliance or self. It was largely a visceral reaction to having read one too many highly unconstructive, unoriginal and mathematically inept threads whining about Amarr....

If it was because of the forums then it wouldnŠt explain why Minmatar is uncommon as well, because there are very few if any Minmatar whiners, and it doesnŠt explain why there are so many Caldari players when Caldari complains a lot on the forums.
It is all about the start of the game, the first months you are in EvE it is all about pve and the best and easiest start you will get is if you chose Caldari.
Minmatar are so few because they need to have loads of skillpoints in different weapon systems, something they lack in the beginning. The ships themselves are hardly ever source of complaints.
What puts of players from chosing Amarr is the limits of laser weapons. Granted Amarr has some nice ships once you are able to fly Battleships or T2 ships despite the use of lasers, but not in the beginning, compared to other races.

Population has jack to do with balance, otherwise Caldari is overpowered.
It has to do with faction theme.
Read the faction themes.
Caldari : Ruthless efficiency blah blah kicked Gallente ass blah balah (highest pop) Gallente : Democratic blah blah Human Rights blah blah blah (Second highest pop) Minmatar : Former slaves blah blah free their brothers blah blah (third highest) Amarr : Religious blah blah God blah Slavery blah (lowest)
Of course they're the lowest pop, their description makes them sound like a bunch of Mormons.
Its not that they're "ebil", slavery could have been much cooler if it was practiced by the Caldari in the name of efficiency.
Religion is ghey. Monarchy is ghey.
Its just not cool. In fact slavery is the only cool aspect of the Amarr race, everything else about it sucks, from the golden color of the ships to the annoying costumes.
It could be overpowered and still few ppl would play it.

heh heh heh, quite true. but that's not just true of amarr, it applies to everything - it's the small minority of people who whine about things.
anyway, 16%, not that bad, since there's 4 races, a completely balanced population would be 25% each. the whiners would have you believe that everyone is caldari, but that's obviously not true, since only 38% are caldari. admittedly, probably about 70% of players fly caldari ships, but that's something different entirely. ========================================== that's no moon... oh, wait, yes it is, the space station's out the other window. |

The reason I picked Minmatar was the descriptions of the races. I liked the Minnie's underdog status. Amarri hyper-religious slavers... feh! However, I wasn't impressed by the looks of the Matari male characters. They either looked like Bob Marley or Frankenstein.
Up until recently, I had trained in all races ships except Amarr. Even now, I only have Amarr frigate and small laser skills, and the only reason I have those is I lucked into a Succubus BPC drop from a rat and I wanted to try it out. I don't think I've flown any true Amarr ships with this character. There are a few Amarr ships that sound like they might be interesting, but ATM, they don't justify the amount of training time it would take to fly them -- especially when there are whole classes of more useful ships still to learn.

I just wish race descriptions would actually fit for what they are now when you make character. I picked caldari to fly advanced high tech ships and get engineer background. However after a short while I realised most of ships I fly are pretty low tech in current eve.
Impression I got for races on character creation and eve homepage were:
Amarr: mostly boring feodalist evil slavers with religious blabla flying big awesome ships. Gallente: Liberalists, almost as cool as caldari but I just didn't like idea of flying slow big clumsy droneships (lol, look at ishtar now) Minmatar: I thought they were kind of cool, I just wasn't in mood of creating a character with "savage" background. Fast agile ships for sure seemed pretty interesting idea. Caldari: Technocrats/nationalists. Since I was really into idea of playing some high tech character at the time it was pretty easy choice because gallente ships didn't seem interesting. I was pretty interested about shield technology and "faster than gallente" ships (lol, compare speeds now)
Against those thoughts I'd suggest few ideas for improvement:
Amarr: Make them somehow more interesting rp wise. like uh not so evil sounding. and not so ugly. Specially males look like ****. Afaik amarr ships are pretty cool, but it seems some amarr pilots would really like some kinda noob battleship. :p Gallente: I think they're alright rp wise, just uh a bit too normal there's some interesting thing missing there. Being liberal and democratic doesn't really say anything. Their ships are mechanics wise pretty awesome, except they're not big slow droneboats. Minmatar: Freedom fighters yeah, how long they're gonna fight. most of them still living in slavery and no one does anything? Huh. I think matar ships are mostly fine and fit for their desc. They could use some more pve options though, maybe. At least would be new idea probably. Caldari: Natinalists/technocrats. So yeah, where's that war with gallente and the high tech? Missile ships are generally fine, but turretboats uh are like: I buy a 150mil rokh and use it once a year. They're that useful. Also first impression I got for caldari race isn't really fit for slowboating raven shooting torpedoes from year 1947. Battlestar Galactica anyone? It's more like retro...

Hmm well I am amarr as I like the look of the ships mainly,
But I fly galentee ships mainly as amarr ones are not any good vs the rats, but are good for a bit of a punch in fleet battles although normally get picked on and called primary a lot. = Times of Ancar =

anyway if the bonusses where on the race instead of the ships ( or mabe half ) that would mean there is a difference between races. And people would actualy think about before creating one..

Biggest problem with Amarr: They look like constapated, 60 year old algebra teachers.
"Yes, I want to look like Mr. Jones from 7th period math! I shall pick Amarr"
Wait til ambulation comes out and we all get a face lift. It will be interesting to see if they keep the Amarr "prune face" theme or not.

Originally by: Khes New players do not choose race because of the ships abilities. They choose race by the information they get during the character creation. So the reason there are few amarr players is not because of how good or bad their ships are.
I believe this would be correct. During character creation, the caldari are all about business and efficiency. The gallente are all about freedom and democracy, the minmatar seemed to be a rag tag bunch of tribal freedom fighters, and the amarr corrupt religious nutcases.
Or thats what they seem like when you first read about it anyway. Because of this, more people will chose caldari and gallente, especially after checking out character looks. Most new players do not know nearly enough about ship/racial characteristics to base a choice on those, so they just go with what feels right/fun/hot avatar.
I base my argument on the many of new players I talk to every week in EVE University.

I've come to a conclusion on this subject. We've all assumed that CCP are uncompromisingly stupid when it comes to Amarr. This is very strange, since they display a generally better than average lack of stupidity in most other areas.
So the implied assumption is that CCP aren't being stupid with Amarr either. So what possible reason would there be for the suckage?
RP. CCP have decided to make Amarr RP a dying, ancient, has-been Empire well past it's prime. What better way to do this than actually make them a real dying has-been Empire, through cool calculated suckage?

How would you like it if you went to college and your guidance counselor helped you decide to get a Business degree instead of an engineering one by convincing you that one is as good as another but "just different".
Then you found out after 4 years of college and graduation that Engineers make 100K than you do in Business.
Then some moron tells you "oh, just go back and earn a different degree"
Oh wait, Never mind. You probably never went to college. Are you even out of High school yet?
