I going to say its going to be one of the longest of 2 or 3 days, + 2 or 3 days on top of that for those who don't have high enough high speed for the 1g patch.

There was a presentation from FanFest about delivering the patch. At first you just download normal sized patch and you can play right away with the old engine. The new graphics download in the background and will throttle down so as to not lag you too much while you are playing. As far as actual server downtime goes, I wouldn't expect it to be longer than any other patch since the new engine only concerns the client and not the server.

going to be a VERY long one. Not necessarily the regular 'down time' but personal DT from everyone trying to download the patch. Shouldnt be too long though. Just set a long skill.

The "classic" patch will be only 50-ish MB. The "art content" patch (the huge one, that 1+ GB) will be downloaded in background while you play. _ Char creation | Stacknerfs | Invention |CNVTF |

The development "classic" patch, from Revelations 2.3 to Trinity is currently 27 MB. It contains some 7 MB of translations that are there only for testing purposes at this point but is missing some old-style models for new ships. So 20-30 MB is a reasonable estimate at this point.
All clients will be autopatched from Revelations 2.3 to Trinity at deployment and you can start playing right away when the server is up.
Then you will be able to download the art content patch in the background. It looks like it will be 600-700 MB.
All numbers subject to change.

They probably left out the Amarr skins since they're planning on deleting Amarr alltogether at some point anyway (least that's the vibes I'm getting from CCP not doing anything for Amarr).

At the time when CCP 2Kay wrote his dev blog on delivering Trinity it looked like a 20 MB app patch and 1 GB art patch. The latest figures look like a 30% larger app patch but 30% smaller art patch, for the biggest saving.

Any chance of this being a Bittorrent download only? Over 1Gb will be a tremendous drain on people patching. If you could send a copy to Chribba for eve-files as a Seed then it would be much appreciated.

I forget where the blog is but they said they will use a BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to deploy the art content patch. This is part of Windows and as long as your PC is on the patch will download (you need not be playing EVE). BITS allows for you to do other things without really noticing it is doing this (it'll throttle the patch download so you can surf and play online and so on). If you want you can tell the BITS transfer to go ahead and use all your bandwidth if you want.
They specifically stated they will not use a Torrent because many ISPs block those (they said they could not even get their own patch in their own office because Torrents are blocked there).

Torrents are not blocked by ISPs unless there is a request from the customer (thus meaning custom ACLs on the i/f(s) of the customer) to block specific ports. In fact many ISPs rent racks to companies that have mirror servers. Usually are black boxes (the ISP doesn't know what is in the servers).
Don't forget that torrent programs can use any port you specify in their preferences. In example port 80 (HTTP). Torrents are usually blocked by the IT staff of the company/organization on the Edge devices. Reason is that the bandwidth is valuable to get the job done and not for a employer to saturate the network with his downloads (yes it happens every time).

Will the "classic" client still be cpu heavy or will it also make more use of the GPU like the new super client being made available?

Everyone is getting the new engine. The difference between the downloads is what art content the engine will display.

The code for the engine takes very little space as its all.. well.. code that is easily compressed as its just numbers and such.. The Art on the other hand are graphics files that are very large natively and can't be compressed easily to shrink the size..
If you use textures generated by your graphics card then an entier game can be under 100k in size..
